Abstract: A torque limiting clutch having a torque limit which is easily calibrated and relatively constant throughout the service life of the clutch. The clutch includes a pair of rotatable members which are rotatably coupled by resilient friction members yieldably engaging one of the pair of members and securing to the other of the pair of members. The friction elements are configured to achieve substantially uniform friction force and wear along their friction surfaces. According to one embodiment of the invention standard commercial snap rings may be employed as the friction elements.
Abstract: A perforated foil bearing surface having dry lubricant reservoirs dispersed throughout and a method of producing such perforated foil bearing surfaces.
Abstract: Apparatus for supporting and constraining opposed end members of a heat exchanger frame structure while maintaining the high temperature portions of the heat exchanger thermally isolated from the frame and accommodating relative movement of the heat exchanger due to thermal growth. Thermal isolation with structural support is achieved by the use of strategically positioned, thin-walled metal members aligned in the direction of heat travel between high temperature portions of the heat exchanger and adjacent frame elements. Opposed portions of the heat exchanger are tied together by rods extending between them and secured thereto. Longitudinal growth of the heat exchanger core and associated ducting is accommodated by the provision of flange guides slidable on guide pins attached to the frame.
Abstract: An annular inlet stator vane assembly positioned upstream of the bypass and core flow passages of a turbofan jet engine is provided with energy-absorbing bendable vanes which are fixedly secured to an outer support shroud assembly and extended through slots in an inner shroud assembly. The inner ends of the vanes are releasably secured to the inner shroud by specially designed deformable retention clips which are welded to the inner vane ends and shroud. These features of the vane assembly cooperate to limit the circumferential extent of inlet vane damage caused by engine-ingested objects, and to help prevent damaged vane assembly structure from being drawn through the core passage of the engine or blocking such core passage.
Abstract: A tubular foil bearing carrier, upon which a plurality of individual compliant foils are mounted, is disposed between two relatively rotatable journal bearing elements. The bearing carrier includes at least one circumferential row of alternating slots and bars with individual hairpin foils, having an integral underfoil and overfoil, mounted thereon.
Abstract: A position transducer for indicating the position of a core member of a linear variable differential transformer produces DC level output signals proportional to changes occurring in the excitation and core displacement. Pulse signals from a clock source are converted to sinusoidal signals of a predetermined frequency and applied to the transformer. Movement of the core member varies the amplitude of the secondary waveform. To extract the position information the primary and secondary waveforms are applied to sample and hold circuits. These circuits receive gating signals to ensure the outputs of the primary and secondary sample and hold circuits acquire peak values of the sinusoidal input signals. The gating signals are derived by applying the sinusoidal primary waveform to a phase shift network. The resultant waveform is squared and used to trigger a one shot to produce a pulse train whose pulse width is 1/14 the period of excitation frequency.
Abstract: A pressure-to-electric output system is used to convert the dual outlet pressure signals of a fluidic angular rate sensor to a pair of oscillating electrical signals whose relative frequency differential is very accurately indicative of the sensor outlet pressure differential. The sensor outlets are fluidically coupled to the control ports of the first amplifier in a cascaded series of fluidic proportional amplifiers. The outlet ports of the terminal amplifier are coupled to the inlet ports of a pair of fluidic oscillators. A pair of microphone type pressure-to-electric transducers are driven by the oscillators to produce the oscillating electrical signals.
Abstract: An air conditioning system of the air cycle heat pump type for selectively heating and cooling a residence or similar space environment. In one embodiment, a combustor and associated Brayton cycle turbine provide the primary drive to a compressor constituting the heat pump. In a second embodiment, the Brayton turbine is replaced by an electric motor coupled to drive the compressor shaft. An auxiliary turbine is also coupled to the drive shaft to provide auxiliary drive derived from the operation of a portion of the system at sub-atmospheric pressure. In this portion, during the cooling mode, water is evaporated into the system to further assist in cooling by removing the latent heat of vaporization.
Abstract: A pressure regulator system for providing controlled reduction of fluid pressure from a relatively high pressure fluid source to a relatively low regulated fluid pressure output. The pressure regulator system includes a pressure reduction regulator designed for stable flow under transonic conditions, and an improved solenoid valve assembly for switching the reduction regulator to an operational condition.
Abstract: A control arrangement is provided for controlling the operation of an hydraulic assist turbocharger of the type including an hydraulic turbine driven by an hydraulic fluid under pressure to supplementally drive a turbocharger during engine operating conditions when supplemental air flow is required. The control arrangement includes a dual function control valve responsive to engine speed and load to regulate the supply of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic turbine in accordance with engine air flow requirements.

Abstract: A vortex whistle silencing member is secured to the leading and trailing portions of a compressor intake articulated guide vane in such manner that the silencing member is held in a stationary position during pivotal motion of the trailing vane portion between its fully open and closed positions.
Abstract: A diametrically opposed pair of radially inwardly directed vortex-disturbing tabs are secured to a compressor intake assembly to eliminate vortex whistle therein.
Abstract: A charge air cooler is provided for mounting within the intake manifold of a combustion engine. The charge air cooler comprises a heat exchanger core formed by a plurality of relatively lightweight heat transfer elements defining a first flow path for charge air prior to ingestion of the charge air by the engine and a second flow path for a coolant in heat transfer relation with the charge air. The heat exchanger core supports at least one transversely extending rigid mounting sleeve for receiving a mounting bolt passed through a bolt-receiving hole in the intake manifold to secure the charge air cooler within the intake manifold.
