Abstract: Techniques are described for maintaining the orthogonality of user waveforms in multi-user wireless communication systems, such as systems using the code division multiple access (CDMA) modulation scheme in the presence of frequency-selective fading channels. Unlike conventional systems in which spreading is performed on individual information-bearing symbols, the “chip-interleaved block-spreading” (CIBS) techniques described herein spread blocks of symbols. A transmitter includes a block-spreading unit to form a set of chips for each symbol of a block of information-bearing symbols and to produce a stream of chips in which the chips from different sets are interleaved. A pulse shaping unit within the transmitter generates a transmission signal from the stream of interleaved chips and transmits the signal through a communication channel.
Abstract: The invention provides a method of preventing, delaying, or reversing the progression of Alzheimer's disease by administering an A?42 lowering agent to a mammal under conditions in which levels of A?42 are selectively reduced, levels of A?38 are increased, and levels of A?40 are unchanged. The invention provides methods and materials for developing and identifying A?42 lowering agents. In addition, the invention provides methods for identifying agents that increase the risk of developing, or hasten progression of, Alzheimer's disease. The invention also provides compositions of A?42 lowering agents and antioxidants, A?42 lowering agents and non-selective secretase inhibitors, as well as A?42 lowering agents and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.

Abstract: A wide-angle zoom lens with as few as two plastic elements codes the wavefront produced by the imaging system such that the imaging system is substantially invariant to aberrations related to misfocus. Signal processing is used to decode the wavefront to form the final image. A first type of zoom lens configuration uses as few as two lens elements. In this type, image processing may be modified to take into account the positioning of the lenses.

Abstract: The biological effects of the cytokine TNF are mediated by binding to receptors on the surface of cells. This disclosure describes new proteins and polynucleotides that promote enzymatic cleavage and release of TNF receptors. Also provided are methods for identifying additional compounds that influence TNF receptor shedding. As the active ingredient in a pharmaceutical composition, the products of this invention increase or decrease TNF signal transduction, thereby alleviating the pathology of disease.

Abstract: A method for detecting whether methyladenosine phosphatase (MTAse) is present in a cell sample. In one respect, the method comprises adding oligonucleotide probes to the sample, which probes are capable of specifically hybridizing to any MTAse encoding nucleic acid in the sample under conditions favoring that hybridization. Absence of MTAse in a sample is considered to be indicative of malignancy. Polynucleotides encoding MTAse, MTAse peptides and antibodies to MTAse, as well as kits for performing the methods of the invention, are provided.

Abstract: Sulfur resistant/tolerant adsorbents useful for separating olefins from paraffins in a cracked gas stream including hydrogen sulfide. The method comprises the steps of contacting the gaseous mixture with an adsorbent which preferentially adsorbs the alkene, at a selected temperature and pressure, thereby producing a non-adsorbed component and an alkene-rich adsorbed component; the adsorbent comprising a carrier having a surface area, the carrier having been impregnated with a silver compound by incipient wetness, the silver compound releasably retaining the alkene; and changing at least one of the pressure and temperature to thereby release the alkene-rich component from the adsorbent. The adsorbent substantially maintains its adsorbent capacity and preference for the alkene in the presence of the sulfur compound. Sulfur resistant/tolerant adsorbents useful for selectively separating dienes from a mixture, particularly one containing mono-olefins and hydrogen sulfide, are also disclosed.

Abstract: The chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) of products in general and semiconductor wafers in particular is controlled by monitoring the acoustic emissions generated during CMP. A signal is generated with the acoustic emissions which is reflective of the energy of the acoustic emissions. The signals are monitored and the CMP process is adjusted in response to a change in the acoustic emission energy. Changes in the acoustic emission energy signal can be used to determine the end-point for CMP, particularly when fabricating semiconductor wafers for planarizing/polishing a given surface thereof.

Abstract: Method and composition for sealing a borehole. A chemically bonded phosphate ceramic sealant for sealing, stabilizing, or plugging boreholes is prepared by combining an oxide or hydroxide and a phosphate with water to form slurry. The slurry is introduced into the borehole where the seal, stabilization or plug is desired, and then allowed to set up to form the high strength, minimally porous sealant, which binds strongly to itself and to underground formations, steel and ceramics.

Abstract: A suite of optical performance monitoring (OPM) methods, based on optical subcarrier multiplexing, are described by the invention. The strength of this approach lies in the simplicity of double sideband subcarrier signals and the fact that these signals travel the complete optical path with the baseband signal of interest. The subcarrier signals can be recovered using techniques described in the application and are immune to fiber dispersion induced fading.

Abstract: Arsenic trioxide, an inorganic compound, is commercially available anti-cancer agent but it carries significant toxicity. Organic arsenicals, on the other hand, are much less toxic, to the extent that the methylation of inorganic arsenic in vivo into organic arsenicals has been considered a detoxification reaction. New organic arsenic derivatives have been synthesized, including S-dimethylarsino-glutathione, S-dimethylarsino-thiosuccinic acid and S-dimethylarsino-thiobenzoic acid, and established its potent in vitro cytotoxic activity against numerous human tumor cell lines, both of solid and hematological origin, as well as against malignant blood cells from patients with leukemia. Results form a basis for the development of S-dimethylarsino-glutathione, S-dimethylarsino-thiosuccinic acid, S-dimethylarsino-thiobenzoic acid, and other organic arsenicals as an anti-cancer therapy, combining high efficacy with very low, if any, toxicity.
