  • Patent number: 5628641
Abstract: A collapsible plug device includes a casing, an electrical plug rotatably mounted in the casing and movable between a collapsed and an extended position, and a releasable locking mechanism connected to the casing and designed to engage the electrical plug to maintain the plug in an extended position. The locking mechanism can be released by a user to allow the plug to be moved to the collapsed position. A preferred form of locking mechanism is a slidable lock bar which is designed to engage a detent in a rotatable shaft which is connected to or integral with an electrical plug body.A cradle or attachment can be integrated into the casing, with an electrical connection and a mechanical connection so that a rechargeable battery or a device containing such a battery can be electrically and mechanically attached to the cradle. Alternatively, a cable can be fitted with a power adapter plug and electrically connected to the basic device.

  • Patent number: 5568365
Abstract: A compact power supply features a package with an included volume of less than about 250 cubic centimeters, a switching power supply contained in the package, the power supply capable of providing more than about 10 watts of power, and connections from input power to and for output from the power supply. The power supply can be configured on three circuit boards, in a U-shaped configuration. The boards may be partially or fully potted to provide improved thermal performance and safety. The electronic components are carefully selected and matched for maximum output performance.

  • Patent number: 5565685
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp having multiple discrete zones with different levels of radiation intensity along its length has a tube with a fluorescent coating on the interior of the tube adapted to produce ultraviolet radiation of substantially uniform intensity. A reflective coating is provided along a finite length of the tube adjacent one end thereof and about only a portion of the circumference thereof to provide an increased intensity of radiation emanating from the uncoated portion of the periphery of the lamp in the finite portion due to reflection of radiation from the reflective coating. This lamp is especially useful in an array for a tanning chamber to provide a higher intensity of ultraviolet radiation in the facial area.

  • Patent number: 5559596
Abstract: An optical fourier transform image representative of characteristics of a liquid sample and particles within the fluid sample is quickly and inexpensively generated by an optical fourier transform system. A small liquid sample is received in a lenticular array liquid sample container with the fluid sample entering open-ended microchannels in the container preferably by capillary action. The container is formed of an optical material such that the fluid sample in the microchannels forms a grating when placed into an optical fourier transform system. Accordingly, the fourier transform image generated within the system is characteristic of the liquid sample forming the grating for the system. The liquid sample container is formed of two plates of optical acrylic, which may be coated or otherwise treated to make it non-hydrophobic to prevent the loss of moisture from liquid samples. A first one of the plates has an array of microgrooves formed into a first surface of the plate.

  • Patent number: 5557112
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp having multiple zones with different ultraviolet radiation characteristics along its length has a tube with a first fluorescent coating for producing ultraviolet radiation of substantially uniform intensity extending over a first finite length of the tube adjacent one end. A second fluorescent coating extending over a second finite length of the tube adjacent its other end thereof produces ultraviolet radiation of a substantially uniform intensity and having radiation characteristics which are different from those produced in the first finite length. Generally, the UVB intensity and UVB/UVA ratio will be increased. This lamp is ideally suited for use in tanning chambers to provide uniform tanning by providing a higher intensity and a higher UVB/UVA ratio for radiation in the area of the head.

  • Patent number: 5552664
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp having a logo, design or graphic information formed thereon. The glass envelope of the lamp is provided internally thereof with a coating of pigmented layer superimposed with a layer of a reflective material and one or more layers of a fluorescent material to generate the desired colored light when the lamp is energized. The logo or design is laser engraved onto the glass envelope of the lamp is a manner to ablate the respective layers of material wherever the laser beam engages the glass envelope. The arrangement is such that when the lamp is energized, the logo or design will be illuminated in the color of the light generated by the fluorescent material associated with the logo or design. In one form of the invention, multiple color light is generated by layering multiple coatings of fluorescent material internally of a lamp wherein each layer of fluorescent material will generate light of different colors.

  • Patent number: 5527587
Abstract: A trim piece (10) includes a body shape (30) and mold edge (34). A fabric cover (28) covers the body (30). An indent (38) extends along the periphery of the trim piece (10) just below the mold edge (34). A movable die part (56) forces additional fabric (40) into the indent (38) during the mold process. The excess fabric (40) is in tension when the movable die part (56) is retracted but the excess fabric (40) relieves the tension between the indent (38) and the mold edge (34) eliminating the tendency of the fabric cloth (28) to pull back or creep back from the mold edge (34) or the resulting cut line.

  • Patent number: 5507667
Abstract: An electrical device is provided with one or more channels in one side, e.g. an end, of the device so that a cord connected to the device can be routed through a channel and not extend past that side of the device. A channel restriction is provided so that the cord cannot be removed from the channel without application of some force. In one preferred form, the case design allows for a power output cable to be positioned at right angle to the power supply. This feature, which is especially useful in tight environments such as behind a desk, is accomplished by incorporating a notch molded into the output end of the device as shown on the figures. In addition, the entire output cable is designed to be wrapped around the power supply during storage with the output plug fitted into the plug storage cavity at the bottom of the power supply which also forms the notch.
