The contact position of a polishing sponge on a spindle of the polishing lathe and a lens can be precisely positioned through numerical reading, realizing quantized control of the polishing of a lens edge, and enabling improvement and modification to the design of the lens edge to become simpler.

    Abstract: An energy efficient desalination process that does not produce waste products involves the extraction of water from a first solution, such as seawater, by using a second concentrated solution to draw the water from the first solution across a semi-permeable membrane. By manipulating the equilibrium of the soluble and insoluble species of solute within the second solution in favor of the soluble species of the solute, a saturated second solution can be used to generate osmotic pressure on the first solution. Also, by adjusting the equilibrium in favor of the less soluble species after the water has been drawn from the first solution, a portion of the solute can easily be precipitated out. Heating the second solution decomposes the solute into its constituent gases. The constituent gases and precipitated solute may be recycled through the process to affect the changes in equilibrium and eliminate waste products.

    Abstract: Methods are provided for producing a primate oocyte in vitro. The methods include removing nuclear DNA from a recipient primate oocyte from a first primate in a manner that does not lower levels of maturation promoting factor (MPF) to form an enucleated recipient primate oocyte. The recipient primate oocyte is enucleated using a non-UV-based spindle imaging system. Nuclear genetic material or DNA including chromosomes from a donor primate oocyte arrested at metaphase II from a second primate is isolated in the form of the karyoplast and introduced into the enucleated recipient primate oocyte. Introduction of the chromosomes is performed using a fusogenic agent or electroporation to produce a hybrid oocyte.

    Abstract: Disclosed are compositions and methods related to the isolation and identification of the primate T-lymphotropic viruses, HTLV-3 and HTLV-4. The diversity of HTLVs was investigated among central Africans reporting contact with NHP blood and body fluids through hunting, butchering, and keeping primate pets. Herein it is shown that this population is infected with a variety of HTLVs, including two retroviruses; HTLV-4 is the first member of a novel phylogenetic lineage that is distinct from all known HTLVs and STLVs; HTLV-3 falls within the genetic diversity of STLV-3, a group that has not previously been seen in humans. The present disclosure also relates to vectors and vaccines for use in humans against infection and disease. The disclosure further relates to a variety of bioassays and kits for the detection and diagnosis of infection with and diseases caused by HTLV-3 and HTLV-4 and related viruses.

    Abstract: It was found that bacteria belonging to the genus Clostridium induce accumulation of regulatory T cells (Treg cells) in the colon. Moreover, the present inventors found that regulatory T cells (Treg cells) induced by from these bacteria suppressed proliferation of effector T-cells. From these findings, the present inventors found that the use of bacteria belonging to the genus Clostridium or a physiologically active substance derived therefrom made it possible to induce proliferation or accumulation of regulatory T cells (Treg cells), and further to suppress immune functions.
