Abstract: A microfluidic sensor includes a microchannel that includes a reaction site with a reagent and a sample inlet. A liquid substance is received at the sample inlet and travels by capillary action to the reaction site. A temperature sensor measures a temperature as a result of a reaction between the reagent and a chemical in the liquid substance. A controller is communicatively connected to the temperature sensor, receives the temperature measured by the temperature sensor, and derives a concentration of the chemical in the liquid substance from the temperature.
Abstract: This application relates to combination therapies including triciribine and related compounds and taxanes and compositions with reduced toxicity thr the treatment and prevention of tumors, cancer, and other disorders associated with abnormal cell proliferation.
Abstract: A system for imaging a gamma source includes a pixelated Compton scattering layer, for Compton scattering of gamma photons emitted by the gamma source, and a non-pixelated full-energy detector for detecting at least a portion of Compton scattered gamma photons geometrically encoded by a coded aperture positioned between the pixelated Compton scattering layer and the full-energy detector at a distance from the pixelated Compton scattering layer. A method for imaging a gamma source includes (a) detecting coincidence events, each including Compton scattering in a pixelated Compton scattering layer, and transmission to a non-pixelated full-energy detector of a Compton scattered gamma photon transmitted through a coded aperture located at a distance from the pixelated Compton scattering layer, and (b) determining an image of the gamma source from the detection of the coincidence events.

Abstract: Hepatic progenitors comprise two populations of human hepatic stem cells, primitive and proximal hepatic stem cells, and two populations of committed progenitors, one for biliary cells and one for hepatocytes. Human primitive hepatic stem cells are a very small fraction of the liver cell population and give rise to proximal hepatic stem cells constituting a much larger fraction of the liver. Human proximal hepatic stem cells give rise to biliary and hepatocyte committed progenitors. Primitive and proximal stem cells are the primary stem cells for the human liver. Human primitive hepatic stem cells may be isolated by immunoselection from human livers or culturing human liver cells under conditions which select for a human primitive hepatic stem cell. Proximal hepatic stem cells may be isolated by immunoselection, or by culturing human liver cells under conditions which include a developmental factor.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to the extraction and detection of pathogens using carbohydrate-functionalized biosensors. Immobilized carbohydrate moieties on the biosensor provide a means for non-specific binding of a plurality of target analytes. When a sample containing the target analyte is applied or otherwise transported to the biosensor detection surface, non-specific binding interactions between the carbohydrate moiety and the analyte immobilize/retain the analyte at the detection surface. The carbohydrate moiety is a stable binding pair member that allows on-sensor rinsing of a sample to enhance detection of an analyte in the sample. Specific analyte identification can be achieved with an analyte probe having a detection moiety and a binding pair member specific to the target analyte of interest.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention and treatment of blood-brain barrier disorder comprising fluoxetine as an active ingredient. More particularly, fluoxetine inhibits the expressions of matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)-2, MMP-9, and MMP-12, which are reported to be related to blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and inflammatory reaction after spinal cord injury, specifically inhibits the activations of MMP-2 and MMP-9, inhibits the decomposition of ZO-1, the most representative tight junction protein, so as to maintain tight junction between endothelial cells and to protect blood-brain barrier thereby, inhibits the increase of blood-brain barrier permeability, and inhibits the expressions of chemoattractants of blood cells, such as CXCL-1, CXCL-2, CCL-2, CCL-3 and CCL-4 so as to reduce inflow of blood into spinal cord and recover exercise function which has been deteriorated by spinal cord injury.
