  • Patent number: 6351183
Abstract: A switched amplifying device for use in a wireless telecommunications receiver as an amplifier of an RF signal has an amplifying device electrically connected in parallel with a switch. The switched amplifying device has a bypass mode in which an electrical path of the RF signal bypasses the amplifying device and is connected to an RF output port. The switched amplifying device also has an amplification mode in which the electrical path of the RF signal flows through the amplifying device prior to presentation of the RF signal at the RF output. In the bypass mode, the amplification device is in an off state. Similarly, in the amplification mode, the bypass device is in an off state. Use of the switched amplifying device according to the teachings of the present invention in a receiver permits accommodation of a larger dynamic range in amplitude of received signal with less signal degradation and noise figure than in prior art amplification devices.

  • Patent number: 6347951
Abstract: A zero or low insertion force socket coupling mechanism is actuated by rotation of a flat blade screwdriver or other like tool. The actuation device includes a receptacle in the shape of the arabic letter “S.” Placing the blade of the screwdriver in the receptacle and rotating the screwdriver moves the upper portion of the apparatus relative to the lower portion to line up the pins with the sockets. The shape of the receptacle enables the force created by the twisting motion of the screwdriver to be placed on the sides of the receptacle by the sides of the blade, rather than the ends of the blade, which could damage the molded plastic component. As a result, the actuation device avoids the waste of space of convention lever actuated devices. Moreover, the actuation device enables the use of a commonly available tool to actuate the coupling mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6330447
Abstract: A roaming decision is made and roaming channel selected in a wireless communications system based upon an evaluation of the operability of a data link layer interconnection, In a connection based protocol, the peer to peer data link layer interconnection is implemented through use of a unique connection identifier known in each peer functional layer of the data link interconnection. If the connection identifier has a value outside of a valid range, the interconnection is presumed nonoperational and the system makes a decision to roam.

  • Patent number: 6296499
Abstract: A signal connector assembly with a plug contact within a plug having a high resistive portion. When the plug of the assembly first makes contact with the electrical receptacles within a mating receptacle, the high resistive portion prevents a current surge. As the plug is further inserted into the receptacle, the energy passing from the plug to the receptacle is gradually increased. Eventually, the receptacle contacts within the receptacle pass the high resistive portion and make contact with the conductive portion of the plug contact, thereby permitting transmission of valid signals without the generation of spurious errors.

  • Patent number: 6297533
Abstract: A lateral conduction MOS structure characterized by reduced source resistance and reduced pitch. The structure includes a semiconductor substrate having an epitaxial semiconductor layer thereon, the substrate and epitaxial layer being of the same conductivity type. The structure further includes a source layer and a drain layer, each layer being of a second conductivity type, and a channel layer disposed between the source layer and the drain layer. The channel layer has an oxide layer and a gate disposed thereon. At least one of a wet anisotropic and a reactive ion etching step is performed to define a trench having a maximum width of about from 4-6 microns and a depth that extends well into the substrate. An electrically conductive via is then formed by deposition of metal into the trench to thereby establish a low resistance path between the source and the substrate ground.

  • Patent number: 6297724
Abstract: An electrical power control system is adapted for controlling power and lighting in a building. Switch controls have either relays or triacs, controlled by microprocessors, to switch power on electrical branch circuits. An interface device 122 communicates with the switches 124,126, arranged in a multidrop configuration, with variable length data packets over serial branch circuits or data buses 142. In addition to being controlled by the interface device 122, the switch controls also have local switch actuators. The actuation of the local switch controls can be used by the interface device 122 as a control inputs to initiate other actions. Adaptive polling of switch controls is used to minimize system response time, and both transmit and receive signals are carried between the switch controls and the interface device 122 at different times on the same twisted pair wires. The interface device 122 can also communicate with a home automation system controller.

  • Patent number: 6296533
Abstract: An electrical receptacle contact is provided having contact beams which are asymmetrically opposed, defining a terminal receiving section therebetween. Asymmetrically opposed contact beams may have various widths to provide an appropriate spring force for a selected plating material, while ensuring that the receptacle contact maintains the same overall dimensional shape as contacts made with a different plating material. Although allowing for variable spring rate in limited dimensioned contact, susceptibility of fracture of the contact of the present invention during forming is minimized.
