  • Patent number: 8749522
Abstract: An optical sensor for measuring a force distribution includes a substrate, one or more light emitting sources, and one or more detectors provided on the substrate, with the detectors responsive to the light emitted by the sources. A deformable opto-mechanical layer is also provided on the substrate with light responsive properties depending on a deformation of the opto-mechanical layer. The design of the sensor and particularly the use of optical components in a deformable layer make it possible to measure the contact force accurately, including in some embodiments, the direction of the contact force. The sensor is scalable and adaptable to complex shapes.

  • Publication number: 20140140167
Abstract: Improved imaging is provided for structures under test that have propagation direction dependent ultrasound propagation speed or position dependent ultrasound propagation speed due to fibrous, coarse grain or single crystalline material. A set reflection points is selected in the structure under test and ultrasound propagation time delays between the reflection point or points on one hand and the plurality of positions on the other hand that fit an observed time delay of the detected reflections are computed. This may be done by means of an iterative method. In the iterative method a synthetically focused ultrasound beam is realized by summing measurements after compensation for propagation time delay from different transmitting transducers to the reflection points.

  • Patent number: 8723106
Abstract: Biological material is detected in a sample using a MALDI-MS technique (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption and Ionization-Mass Spectroscopy). A liquid comprising the sample and a MALDI matrix material is prepared and used to form a continuous stream of the liquid. The stream is separated into successive parts to form drops, which are launched into flight, or the stream is launched into flight and then separated into drops. Drop forming techniques may be used that are known from ink jet printers. Material from the drops is ionized while in flight. Mass spectra from the ionized material of respective drops are measured. Preferably, before the drops are formed the liquid is diluted to a level where the majority of drops at most one micro-organism is present per drop.

  • Publication number: 20140116236
Abstract: A protective wall for use in a structure such as a ship comprises a first and second metal layer, with an armor plate in between and layers of elastomeric material between the armor plate and the first and second metal layer respectively. The first and second metal layer having a higher ductility than the armor plate, the armor plate being mounted between the first and second metal layer in a way that allows the first and second metal layers to stretch relative to armor steel plate at least in response to forces resulting from impact by fragments from an explosion. When an explosion occurs in a space bounded by the protective wall, the first and second metal layer deflect under the pressure pulses due to blasts, stretching relative to the armor plate. The armor plate blocks high speed fragments.

  • Publication number: 20140105573
Abstract: Descriptions of video segments for use to search or select video segments are generated by using a combination of video based action type detection and image based object detection. Action type detection results in detection of action types from a predetermined set of action types, with little or no information about actors involved in the action. Object detection results in detection of individual objects in the images, with little or no information actions. A set of rules is used that define one or more roles associated with action types and conditions on objects that can fill these roles. Detected action types are used to select rules and detected objects are assigned to roles defined the selected rule. Score values are computed for different assignments of detected objects to the role, as a function of the attribute values of the assigned objects. A combination of the detected action type and the detected objects is selected on the basis of the score values.
