Abstract: A method of providing information relating to a path being travelled using a navigation apparatus, involves displaying a path bar including a linear representation of at least a portion of a path to be travelled using a navigation apparatus. The linear representation of the portion of the path is scrollable in the display window by a user to reveal a linear representation of another portion of the path. The method may involve automatically increasing a scale of the linear representation of the path displayed as a given location represented along the path is approached, wherein the location is a location of a safety camera or event affecting traffic flow along the path.

Abstract: A navigation device is disclosed. In at least one embodiment, the navigation device includes a storage device to store points of interest (POIs); and an integrated input and display device to display at least one of the stored POIs and to enable selection of the displayed at least one POI; and a processor to execute an action, upon selection of one of the displayed at least one POI, associated with the selected one of the displayed at least one POI.
Abstract: A navigation device is disclosed wherein, in at least one embodiment. navigation instruction are adapted to the driver preferences. The driving behavior of the driver is recorded (like speed, time to prepare for an exit etc.), and the way he responds to navigation instructions (promptly, or always too late for example). Traffic, weather and time information may be combined with information on the driving behavior of the driver. This information is examined and used to build up a driver profile. This driver profile is used to adapt future navigation instructions. Alternatively, traffic and weather information may be used to build up route and/or environmental profiles. These profiles can also be used separate from the driver profile to adjust the navigation instruction. The combination of these two techniques, building up a profile (or adapt a pre-defined profile) and adapt the navigation instructions, makes the navigation device a more personal-fit navigation aid.

Abstract: A method of operating a PND or navigation system is described, together with a PND or navigation system for performing such a method. The PND or navigation system includes memory storing map data consisting of base map data files and supplemental corrective data files. In at least one embodiment, the method includes correlating the current location with the map data, and in the event that the current location and derived map data are seemingly at odds with one another, performing at least one secondary action. In at least one embodiment, the secondary action may be the issuing of an approve/reject prompt to the user, or the automatic creation, modification or deletion of a new or pre-existing correction. In a further aspect, at least one embodiment of the invention also provides for a PND or navigation system storing an indication of a home location, and prompting a user to visit nearby locations for which corrections exist, followed by prompted or automatic confirmation or rejection thereof.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the manner in which a processor-enabled device should produce sounds from data is described. The device ideally synthesizes sounds digitally, and reproduces pre-recorded sounds, together with an audible delivery thereof, a memory in which is stored a database of a plurality data at least some of which is in the form of text-based indicators, and one or more pre-recorded sounds. The device is further capable of repeatedly determining one or more physical conditions, e.g. current GPS location, which is compared with one or more reference values provided in memory such that a positive result of the comparison gives rise to an event requiring a sound to be produced by the device.
Abstract: A navigation device includes a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver for receiving GNSS signals broadcast by satellites of a GNSS, a receiver for receiving location information input by a user, time information and/or wireless network coverage information and a processing device. In at least one embodiment, the processing device is arranged to determine a seed position from the location information input by a user; time information and/or wireless network coverage information and controls the GNSS receiver to acquire GNSS satellites based on the determined seed position.
Abstract: A system for validating a correction to map data for a geographic location, the system comprising: a processing resource; and a navigation device; wherein the processing resource comprises: a user request generator that is configured to generate a user request for transmission to the navigation device; a transmitter for transmitting the generated user request to the navigation device; and a receiver for receiving a user response from said navigation device; and the navigation device comprises: a receiver for receiving the user request transmitted from the processing resource; a user request module configured to present said received user request to a user of the navigation device; a user response module for capturing a user response to said presented user request, and a transmitter for transmitting said captured user response to said processing resource.
Abstract: A method of determining data indicative of an individual driver workload is disclosed. The method involves obtaining a generic driver workload parameter, the generic driver workload data being based on data indicative of the behaviour of multiple drivers when performing a manoeuvre at a node or traversing a set of one or more segments of an electronic map. An individual modifier representative of the behaviour of an individual driver is generated and used to determine an individual driver workload parameter indicative of the workload of the individual driver when performing the manoeuvre at a node or traversing the one or more segments of an electronic map based on the generic driver workload data for performing the manoeuvre at the node or traversing the one or more segments of the electronic map.

Abstract: A navigation system comprises a processing resource (202) configured to receive destination data representative of a destination, to determine an expected travel time to the destination, and to determine a departure time in dependence upon the expected travel time to the destination, and an output device (206) for providing the departure time to a user.
Abstract: A system is disclosed comprising a mobile device including at least one application which may be run on the device. The system is configured to be able to determine the geographical location of the mobile device and includes an enforcement engine that is separate to and outside of the at least one application. The enforcement engine is configured to permit or restrict a function of said at least one application on the mobile device depending on the location the device is determined to be at. The system operates to control the functioning of the application based on how the local regulations allow the application to be operated.
Abstract: A method, computer program and apparatus are disclosed for generating a display image for a navigation device, wherein the display image includes a map view for display on the navigation device and the map view includes a two dimensional plan view. At least one embodiment of the method includes identifying a plurality of map objects from a digital map for display in a display image on a navigation device; determining whether any of the identified map objects include one or more non-visible features that would not be visible to a user of the navigation device at ground level; generating an adapted set of map objects that does not include any of the non-visible features; and generating, from the adapted set of map objects, a simplified display image for display on the navigation device, wherein the simplified display image does not include any of the non-visible features.
Abstract: An alert content reception apparatus comprises a communications interface (229) compatible with a data broadcast service and capable of receiving, when in use, a broadcast data message comprising reference data concerning alert content. The apparatus also comprises a processing resource (202) arranged to analyze, when in use, the broadcast data message and acquire the alert content associated with the reference data in response to determining that the alert content associated with the reference data has not previously been acquired. The communications interface (229) is compatible with a bidirectional data communications service, the processing resource (202) also being arranged to cooperate with the communications interface (229) in order to retrieve the alert content via the bidirectional data communications service.
Abstract: A technique is disclosed for enabling collection and/or refinement of digital map information for aiding navigation route planning for vehicles larger than ordinary cars, such as goods-vehicles, buses, and car+caravan combinations. In at least one embodiment, a profile of a vehicle's characteristics, and one or more routes followed, are logged by a navigation device, and fed-back to a server that supports the navigation device with map data updates. At the server, or an alternative processing centre, the fed-back data from plural navigation devices is analysed to observe statistically the patterns of roads used by these vehicles, and to categorise these by the type of vehicle.
Abstract: This invention concerns a method of determining a route using map data comprising a plurality of navigable paths, the map data divided into a plurality of regions. The method comprises using at least one processing apparatus to: receive an origin and a destination on the map data and a selection of one of a plurality of cost functions and determine a route from the origin to the destination using the map data and minimum cost data that identifies minimum cost paths between regions of the map data. The minimum cost data identifies more than one minimum cost path between a pair of the regions if different minimum cost paths exist between the pair of regions for different cost functions and determining a route comprises identifying from the minimum cost paths for the pair of regions comprising the origin and destination, the minimum cost path having a lowest cost for the selected cost function.
