Patent number: 4483223Abstract: A portable lathe is disclosed which has a compact arrangement of an automatic tool feed mechanism which facilitates the use of the lathe to machine an internal surface of a workpiece. An automatic cutting bit feed is located diametrically opposite the cutting bit holder and is connected to it by one or more rigid connecting bars. The bars transmit the feeding movement from a feed slide to the cutting bit holder across the face of the rotating cutting head. A feed screw is attached to an overrunning clutch which is advanced through contact with an actuating arm during each revolution of the cutting head. A clutch nut is provided on the feed screw to release the feed slide and the cutting bit holder from the feed screw to facilitate manual manipulation of these elements. The rate of feed may be adjusted by adjusting the stroke of a cam and overrunning clutch associated with the feed screw.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1983Date of Patent: November 20, 1984Assignee: Tri Tool Inc.Inventors: Lawson H. Patent number: 4483522Abstract: A mandrel for fixedly supporting a tubular workpiece during a machine tool cutting operation on the end area of the workpiece includes a pivotally mounted shaft that engages the workpiece and is mounted so as to be angularly adjustable relative to the central body of the mandrel. The angular adjustment of the shaft permits cutting operations to be performed on the end of the tubular workpiece in planes that are offset from a plane that is perpendicular to the centerline of the workpiece. The shaft is constrained to move solely within a single plane about a pivot center located adjacent the end of the workpiece on which a cutting operation is to be performed. The mandrel assembly is geometrically proportioned so that the pivot center of the mandrel shaft can be located in the cutting plane of a machine tool with which the mandrel is intended to cooperate.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1982Date of Patent: November 20, 1984Assignee: Tri Tool Inc.Inventors: Lawson H. Patent number: 4466193Abstract: A precision scribing tool for scribing a circumferential line around a tubular workpiece at a precise distance from the end of the workpiece includes an annular socket with a shoulder defining the bottom of the socket for receiving the end of a tubular workpiece to be socket welded, and a scriber assembly attached to the socket. The scriber assembly includes a hardened point that can be pressed against the surface of the tubular workpiece while the annular socket is manually rotated around the tube end. The scribing device includes a spring biased plunger mechanism that assures accuracy for scribing a line around the tube at a precise distance from the longest point on the end of the tube to permit inspection of a welded joint between the tube end and a socket element to insure that the tube end is located a precise distance within the socket.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1982Date of Patent: August 21, 1984Assignee: Tri Tool, Inc.Inventor: William H. Patent number: 4437366Abstract: A tool carrier for a portable lathe includes a tool slide (84) upon which tool holders (18) are mounted. The tool holders (18) are rigidly secured to the slide surfaces by means of clamps (20) that include male gibs (70) that engage female gibs in the tool holder and the tool carrier. The clamps (20) provide a bearing surface for guiding the tool carrier along the tool slide while also functioning to clamp the carrier relative to the slide when the clamp fasteners (80) are secured.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1981Date of Patent: March 20, 1984Assignee: Tri Tool, Inc.Inventor: William H. Astle

Patent number: 4434689Abstract: A portable tube end preparation tool includes an improved drive shaft for the cutter head of the tool, the drive shaft comprising a compact, three-piece assembly including two shaft portions that are axially aligned with respect to each other along the tool axis, and a coupling sleeve that fits over and joins the shaft portions together through threaded connections at adjoining ends of the shaft portions. The shaft portions and coupling sleeve cooperate with rolling bearing assemblies to react operational load forces into the tool housing through the bearing assemblies.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1982Date of Patent: March 6, 1984Assignee: Tri Tool Inc.Inventors: Lawson H. Patent number: 4418591Abstract: A pipe end preparation and cutoff tool includes a generally annular, fixed housing and a relatively rotatable tool carrying ring that is connected to the housing by means of orthogonal sets of roller bearings travelling in continuous bearing races that are likewise disposed in orthogonal planes. The bearing arrangement enables the ring to transmit radial and thrust loads to the housing and the structural arrangement of elements is intended to prevent gross contamination of the bearing assemblies.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1981Date of Patent: December 6, 1983Assignee: Tri Tool Inc.Inventor: William H. Patent number: 4246814Abstract: A mandrel arrangement for mounting a pipe machining tool for rotation relative to at least one end of a pipe bend to be machined. Locating plate means are detachably mountable on the mandrel for positioning the mandrel in the pipe bend in a predetermined location. Clamping means are provided on the mandrel for clamping the pipe means in the predetermined location. A mandrel shaft means is detachably mounted to the mandrel adjacent one or both of the ends thereof for receiving the pipe machining tool to machine the ends of the pipe bend. Patent number: 4245529Abstract: A mandrel arrangement for mounting a pipe machining tool for rotation relative to at least one end of a pipe elbow or other bend to be machined. A mandrel frame is provided with first and second flange portions having outer surfaces located within planes which intersect to form a predetermined angle approximately equal to the angle of the pipe bend. The frame is adapted to be positioned within the pipe bend with an outer surface of the first flange portion adjacent a first end of the pipe bend and an outer surface of the second flange portion adjacent a second end of the pipe bend. Patent number: 4207786Abstract: A pipe bevelling tool arrangement for providing a predetermined bevel on the end surface of a pipe. The arrangement described herein provides an orbital cam follower bevelling tool that provides a constant bevel leaving a radially extending land on the end surface of a pipe having a predetermined minimal radial extent regardless of the "out-of-round" condition of the pipe. A cam is mounted to engage the exterior surface of the pipe and a bevelling tool is rigidly coupled to the cam and the cam and bevelling tool orbit around the nominal center line of the pipe. The cam and the pipe bevelling tool are resiliently mounted on a rigid arm rotating about the nominal center line of the pipe and the pipe bevelling tool follows movement of the cam in a radial direction. The pipe bevelling tool is set in a preselected position with respect to the cam to provide the desired bevel portion and extent of the radially extending portion on the end surface of the pipe.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1978Date of Patent: June 17, 1980Assignee: Tri Tool, Inc.Inventors: William H.
