  • Patent number: 4512834
Abstract: In a positive drive power transmission system composed of a toothed belt and two or more pulleys, operating noise resulting from the impact of the belt and the pulleys is dramatically reduced by having surface discontinuities on either the belt or on the pulleys on those surfaces where the belt and the pulleys engage in impact contact when in operation. The surface discontinuities may be formed by recessed or raised portions of the belt or pulleys, may be straight or curved, and may be substantially parallel to the tensile member or at an angle thereto. Several methods of manufacturing belts with such surface discontinuities are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4050973
Abstract: The single-stage building of 0.degree. belted pneumatic tires completely in flat band form on standard building drums, is disclosed. The feasibility of the process rests on the provision of the substantially inextensible metallic or non-metallic belt cords in the form of longitudinally extensible high "soft stretch" tapes. In a preferred version of the invention, the tape is composed of a plurality of cords each having formed therein a multiplicity of undulations which in any given straight length of the tape are substantially planar, the cords being disposed in side by side relation so that the planes of the undulations of each cord are generally parallel to the planes of the undulations of each adjacent cord, and the cords together with a relatively weak and frangible but only minimally undulated stabilizing yarn for the tape being secured to each other and held in their undulating state by a relative weak, chain stitch knitted, frangible stitching yarn or thread.

  • Patent number: 4034792
Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a rib on each sidewall adjacent to the flange of the rim on which the tire is mounted. The overlap between the rib and the corresponding flange and the width of the rib are such that the rib interlocks with the rim flange when the tire is deflated under load to allow a deflated tire to operate on the rim without becoming disengaged from the rim.

  • Patent number: 4034544
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing either bulked continuous filament or spun staple yarn in one continuous operation are disclosed. In the method, a first single end of either continuous filament or spun staple yarn is ballooned about and plied with a like second single end of yarn while both are under tension and advancing at a common linear speed. A higher tension is utilized during the plying operation. The plied yarn is then subjected to heat while the tension is relaxed, followed by a cooling and drying stage, to enable the yarn to be twist-set in a bulked condition, with the component single ends substantially free of any twist memory. This abstract is not to be taken either as a complete exposition or as a limitation of the present invention, however, the full nature and extent of the invention being discernible only by reference to and from the entire disclosure.

  • Patent number: 4016320
Abstract: The processing of uncured rubber or like raw material, which is normally produced, stored and shipped in sheet form but which is to be subjected to a continuous and uniform strip feeding into an extruder, mill or like treating apparatus, is disclosed. For this purpose, there is provided in a sheet of such material a plurality of slits extending across the sheet and spaced from each other longitudinally of the sheet, the slits in an alternating sequence starting at the opposite side edges of the sheet and each terminating short of the respective other side edge of the sheet. When one end portion of the slit sheet is introduced into the bite of the apparatus, the sheet is subjected to a pulling force and separates along the slits into a continuous zig-zag strip. • Patent number: 4015651
Abstract: In a tire cord fabric, especially one comprising a multiplicity of parallel steel cords, an improvement is provided whereby the various sources of supply of the tire cords may be identified. In a preferred embodiment, the improvement comprises the substitution of at least one pair of modified steel cords, for example spirally wrapped steel cords, for an equal number of regular steel cords with the spirally wrapped cords being spaced from each other by a particular number of the regular cords for each cord manufacturer. For example, a spacing of 10 regular cords between a pair of special cords may represent manufacturer A, while a spacing of 12 regular cords between a pair of special cords may represent manufacturer B, etc. Thus, each of several sources of supply of the regular cords may be identified according to the number of regular cords between a pair of special cords.
