Abstract: A method of formulating a patient-specific plan for a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure performed upon a patient is provided. The method includes obtaining a standard plan based upon a scan of an anatomy of a standard anatomic specimen, the scan defining a standard scan. The method also includes scanning the patient to obtain a patient-specific scan of an anatomy of the patient. Additionally, the method includes morphing the standard scan to the anatomy of the patient by mapping the standard scan to the patient-specific scan. The method further includes determining the patient-specific plan by modifying the standard plan based upon the mapping.

Abstract: An organism is irradiated with therapeutic radiation from a radiation irradiation device. A pair of two-dimensional radiation detectors are arranged so as to face one another with the irradiated therapeutic radiation passing therebetween, and detect the two-dimensional positions irradiated by a pair of annihilation ? rays produced when a positron emitted from a positron-emitting radionuclide is annihilated. On the basis of a pair of positions detected by the pair of two-dimensional radiation detectors, a radionuclide position detecting unit detects the position of the positron-emitting radionuclide, and the radiation irradiation device irradiates the position of the positron-emitting radionuclide with therapeutic radiation.

Abstract: A novel micron-scale lens, a microlens, is engineered to concentrate light efficiently onto an area of interest, such as a small, light-sensitive detector element in an integrated electronic device. Existing microlens designs imitate the form of large-scale lenses and are less effective at small sizes. The microlenses described herein have been designed to accommodate diffraction effects, which dominate the behavior of light at small length scales. Thus a new class of light-concentrating optical elements with much higher relative performance has been created. Furthermore, the new designs are much easier to fabricate than previous designs.

Abstract: The invention relates to a control method and a controller for a DC-DC converter, such as a synchronous Buck converter, which exploits the principle of capacitor charge balance to allow the converter to recover from a positive and/or negative load current step in the shortest achievable time, with the lowest possible voltage undershoot/overshoot. The control method may be implemented by either an analog or a digital circuit. The controller may be integrated with existing controller schemes (such as voltage-mode controllers) to provide superior dynamic performance during large-signal transient conditions while providing stable operation during steady state conditions.
Abstract: A method for detecting microprocessor hardware faults includes sending at least one input signal to a logic block within the microprocessor, collecting an output response to the input signal from the logic block, and determining whether the output response matches an expected output response of the logic block.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing halftone dots in the field of image hard copying, more particularly to a method for frequency-modulation screening using error diffusion based on dual-feedback. In the known frequency-modulation and amplitude-modulation screening technology, it is hard to output a halftone image with high quality using an output equipment with a low resolution (600 dpi) and the satisfactory effect of representing the gradations of the original image in detail and holding the smoothness of the original image can not be achieved. By using the dual-feedback technology based on a basic algorithm of the error distribution, the method in the present invention realizes the organic combination of the conventional frequency-modulation and amplitude-modulation screens and achieves the effect of mixed screening.

Abstract: The mechanism of the UV light-induced reaction between the indole moiety of tryptophan and chloroform, and the structure of the modified tryptophan and polypeptides including such modified tryptophan residues. The excited indole moiety, which is formed upon UV light irradiation, emits a solvated electron which initiates a series of events that yield fluorescent derivatives that have CHO group covalently bound to the indole moiety. These derivatives are herein referred to as formyltryptophan, and are relatively stable. Similar reactions are observed when 5-hydroxytryptophan, 5-fluorotryptophan, or N-methylindolacetate are used in place of tryptophan, or when other haloalkanes, such as trichloracetic acid, trichlorethanol, trichlorethane, bromoform, and iodoactetate are used in place of chloroform. The derivatives can be used in a variety of applications in fluorescence spectroscopy, and for nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray crystallography, infra-red spectroscopy, circular dicroism and mass spectroscopy.

Abstract: Expression of the E4 orf 1 gene of Ad-36 alone has been discovered to be responsible for the increased insulin sensitivity observed in Ad-36 infected animals, including increased adipogenesis. Ad-36 E4 orf 1 protein can be used to increase insulin sensitivity and ameliorate diabetes. Additionally, drugs that mimic the action of Ad-36 E4 orf 1 protein could be found. Ad-36 E4 orf 1 could also be used to increase fat cells in lipodystrophy. We have also discovered that Ad-36 infection in human skeletal muscle cells increased differentiation and insulin independent glucose uptake. It is expected that infection with Ad-36 E4 orf 1 gene will also cause these effects.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for transport or release of therapeutic and diagnostic agents or metabolites or other analytes from cells, compartments within cells, or through cell layers or barriers are described. The compositions include a membrane barrier transport enhancing agent and are usually administered in combination with an enhancer and/or exposure to stimuli to effect disruption or altered permeability, transport or release. In a preferred embodiment, the compositions include compounds which disrupt endosomal membranes in response to the low pH in the endosomes but which are relatively inactive toward cell membranes, coupled directly or indirectly to a therapeutic or diagnostic agent. Other disruptive agents can also be used, responsive to stimuli and/or enhancers other than pH, such as light, electrical stimuli, electromagnetic stimuli, ultrasound, temperature, or combinations thereof.

Abstract: A method of scalar multiplication for use in elliptic curve-based cryptosystems (ECC) is provided. Scalars are represented using a generic multibase form combined with the non-adjacency property, which greatly reduces the nonzero density in the representation. The method allows for flexibly selecting an unrestricted number of bases and their weight in the representation according to the particular characteristics of a setting, in such a way that computing costs are minimized. A simple, memory-friendly conversion process from binary to multibase representation and an inexpensive methodology to protect the multibase scalar multiplication against simple-side channel attacks are also provided.

Abstract: This invention relates to a novel method of culturing coral tissues and polyps in vitro. Coral tissues obtained by the method of the invention may be maintained as heterotypic spheroid tissue balls for a period of at least three months or they may be induced to undergo development into new polyps, a process termed re-morphogenesis. This method can produce genetic clones of model species from single individuals that can be propagated either as undifferentiated tissue calli or as developed polyps. The products of the invention are of value to a number of educational, scientific, and commercial endeavors. Specifically, this method can be used to propagate genetic clones (strains) of a model organism for scientific research, to serve as ‘pro-environmental conservation’ sources of coral stock for educational specimens as well as a rapidly generated inventory for commercial aquarium industry.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a gas sensor made of field effect transistor based on ZnO nanowires (ZnO-FET) which operates according to the principle of metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) and has a charge carrier channel made of ZnO nanowires between source and drain. The gas sensor device disclosed in the present invention has three electrodes-gate, source and drain, so that it is different from the known gas sensor device which has only two electrodes-cathode and anode. The ZnO nanowires as charge channel in the gas sensor device of the present invention is an n-type semiconductor with high specific surface area, and its electric resistance can be controlled by the gate bias, so that the capability of the present device for sensing gas can be largely promoted.
