Abstract: The present invention describes a low-cost, portable multi-parameter, turbidity sensor based on optical fiber. The sensor quantifies the transmission and scattering of radiation (nephelometry) in a fluid through radiation emission in two or more wavelengths. Inc invention can be used to estimate concentration of suspended sediments, to distinguish the type of sediment based on color, to distinguish different particle-size classes, and to identify and determine the concentrations of different suspended-sediment fractions. The sensor comprises the following elements: radiation emitter of two or more wavelengths (2), a radiation receiver to measure the transmitted radiation. (2), a radiation receiver to measure the scattered radiation (3), and an inner space (4) of the measurement unit containing the fluid being evaluated.

Abstract: Method and system for the detection of anomalous behavior in systems displaying typical and complex behavior encoded in a digital signal through the study of a computational model (artificial system) of interacting agents defined using the information contained in the digital signal and imposing that agents engage in a maximally frustrated dynamics. Changes in the target system's behavior lead a measurable decrease in frustration of the artificial system, from sequences never presented before during the system's normal behavior or combinations of already presented sequences never seen together.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a winemaking process using the traditional method of vinification except that, after fermentation, a chitosan-based film is placed in contact with the wine and no sulfur dioxide is added. The present invention also relates to a process for preparation of a chitosan-based film by modification of the chitosan with natural compounds, which allows to produce chitosan films stable in acidic medium, with high antioxidant activity, while maintaining the antimicrobial activity. In one embodiment, the films are prepared by covalent linkage to the chitosan of molecules, such as genipin, which results in decreasing its solubility in acidic medium, and also of molecules with high antioxidant activity, such as caffeic acid, or grape and wine extracts rich in compounds with antioxidant activity.

Abstract: This invention discloses a photonic system to beamform the electric field yield by a phased array antenna. The system function relies on a photonic tunable delay line, which consists on an optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a predefined time delay difference between arms. The time delay is tuned by adjusting the coupling ratio between the power applied to each one of the interferometer's delay lines. Three embodiments are proposed, wherein one of them just uses a single delay line and a single monchromatic light source, independently of the quantity of the array elementary antennas.

Abstract: Communications with timeliness guarantees, also known as real-time communications are established in a shared medium with different contention based technologies. A real-time station is able to transmit a noise sequence before the intended data packet transmission. The noise sequence being is to occupy the communication medium during a period of time preferably larger than the maximum transmission time of any contention based technology that can have access to the medium, hereinafter designated alien. As such, even if an alien station is transmitting, it will finish its packet during the transmission of the noise sequence. The method prevents the alien stations from accessing the medium as these stations will sense the medium busy after the end of their packet transmissions. This method can be used to support master-multislave real-time communications on shared media in which contention based technologies operate.
