  • Patent number: 11873573
Abstract: Various embodiments include a device for producing structurally modified materials. In some embodiments, the device includes a floating zone furnace which holds a feed rod in contact with seed crystal. One or more laser diodes are then used to heat a portion of the feed rod and cause it to transition to a molten state. A magnetic field is applied to the floating zone to change the underlying crystal structure of the material as it solidifies upon exiting the floating zone. In some instances, the changes may include manipulating the bond angle of the crystal structure or altering the unit cell volume of the crystal. Changes in the crystal structure directly affect the electrical resistivity and/or the magnetization and other physical properties of the crystal.

  • Patent number: 11848174
Abstract: Various embodiments of the present technology generally relate to devices and methods for generating and directing energetic electrons toward a target. More specifically, some embodiments relate to devices, systems, and methods for generating and directing energetic electrons based in the photoelectric effect and directing electric field-focused beams of the energetic electrons toward a target. Electron guns according to the present technology include one or more light sources to stimulate electron transmission, and a series of differentially charged stages to provide a hollow path allowing electrons generated by the photoelectric effect of the light irradiated on interior surfaces defining the path through the stages to travel to an exit of the electron gun. Each of the differentially charged stages have a different potential, thereby providing electrons having two or more different and tunable energy levels exiting as a beam from the electron gun.

  • Patent number: 11839491
Abstract: Systems and methods for a shape-memory in-ear biosensor for polysomnography and monitoring physiological signals are provided. Various embodiments include an earpiece made from a shape memory or temperature-dependent phase transition material embedded into polydimethylsiloxane elastomer body. The earpiece can use electrodes to detect physiological signals by making direct contact with a user's skin and without the use of electrically conductive gel. When heated above the glass transition temperature of the shape memory polymer, various embodiments of the biosensor may be folded. When cooled, the biosensor will maintain the folded shape. The folded biosensor may then be inserted into the ear canal of a user where, in response to heating by the user's body, it partially unfolds to conform to the shape of the ear canal.

  • Patent number: 11842579
Abstract: Systems and methods for battery-based vehicle diagnostics are provided. Various embodiments include a battery-based diagnostics system that guards vehicles against anomalies with a cyber-physical approach. The diagnostics system can be implemented as an add-on module of commodity vehicles attached to automotive batteries, thus providing vehicles an additional layer of protection. The automotive battery can operate in strong dependency with many physical components of the vehicle, which is observable as correlations between battery voltage and the vehicle's corresponding operational parameters, e.g., a faster revolutions-per-minute (RPM) of the engine, in general, leads to a higher battery voltage. These embodiments exploit such physically induced correlations to diagnose vehicles by cross-validating the vehicle information with battery voltage and may be based on a set of data-driven norm models constructed online.

  • Patent number: 11822207
Abstract: The present disclosure discloses a method and apparatus for generating an optical frequency comb. The specific generation method comprises: receiving a pump laser that matches a thermally stable state of a nonlinear optical resonant cavity and causing the pump laser to oscillate in the nonlinear optical resonant cavity, such that a Brillouin gain corresponding to the pump laser coincides with a target longitudinal mode in the nonlinear optical resonant cavity; continuously generating a Brillouin laser at the target longitudinal mode in the case that a pump power of the pump laser exceeds a threshold for generating the Brillouin laser; and generating an optical frequency comb by using the Brillouin laser through a Kerr nonlinear four-wave mixing process. According to the technical solution of the present disclosure, the nonlinear optical resonant cavity with the Brillouin gain can generate an optical frequency comb in its thermally stable region.

  • Patent number: 11795979
Abstract: An electro-hydraulic actuator includes a deformable shell defining an enclosed internal cavity and containing a liquid dielectric, first and second electrodes on first and second sides, respectively, of the enclosed internal cavity. An electrostatic force between the first and second electrodes upon application of a voltage to one of the electrodes draws the electrodes towards each other to displace the liquid dielectric within the enclosed internal cavity. The shell includes active and inactive areas such that the electrostatic forces between the first and second electrodes displaces the liquid dielectric within the enclosed internal cavity from the active area of the shell to the inactive area of the shell. The first and second electrodes, the deformable shell, and the liquid dielectric cooperate to form a self-healing capacitor, and the liquid dielectric is configured for automatically filling breaches in the liquid dielectric resulting from dielectric breakdown.
