Abstract: A precise measurement of the immunological receptor diversity present in a sample is obtained by sequence analysis. Samples of interest are generally complex, comprising more than 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 1010, 1011, 1012 or more different sequences for a receptor of interest. Immunological receptors of interest include immunoglobulins, T cell antigen receptors, and major histocompatibility receptors. The specific composition of immunological receptor sequence variations in the sample can be recorded and output. The composition is useful for predictive, diagnostic and therapeutic methods relating to the immune capabilities and history of an individual. Such predictions and diagnoses are used to guide clinical decisions.

Abstract: A wave energy converter and method for extracting energy from water waves maximizes the energy extraction per cycle by estimating an excitation force of heave wave motion on the buoy, computing a control force from the estimated excitation force using a dynamic model, and applying the computed control force to the buoy to extract energy from the heave wave motion. Analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate that the optimal control of a heave wave energy converter is, in general, in the form of a bang-singular-bang control; in which the optimal control at a given time can be either in the singular arc mode or in the bang-bang mode. The excitation force and its derivatives at the current time can be obtained through an estimator, for example, using measurements of pressures on the surface of the buoy in addition to measurements of the buoy position.

Abstract: A system and method, for measuring phase delay and amplitude of a near infrared signal emanating from tissue of an animal subject in response a near infrared signal input to such tissue, operate by processing a signal from an optical detector and a corresponding signal from an optical detector emulation circuit. In some aspects, the processed signals are fed into zero crossing detectors that in turn feed a time-to-digital converter providing at an output thereof a digital measure of the phase delay of the received optical signal.

Abstract: Disclosed are certain heterocyclic organic compounds that inhibit mitochondrial respiration and also lead to the maintenance of pluripotency of human embryonic stem cells in culture, even in the presence of oxygen. Exemplified are compounds, such as substituted 5-aminotetrazoles, which are reversible mitochondrial inhibitors. The pluripotency of the stem cells after culture is verified by the overexpression of pluripotent stem cell markers, exemplified by at least one of the genes NANOG, OCT4, and SURVIVIN after periods of culture in ambient oxygen.

Abstract: A technology which enables identifying, via a computer, a vessel in a third image. The third image is obtained from a subtraction of a second image from a first image. The second image and the first image are aligned on an imaging space. The first image is post-contrast. The second image is pre-contrast. The technology enables determining, via the computer, a voxel intensity mean value of a segment of the vessel in the third image. The technology enables obtaining, via the computer, a fourth image from a division of the third image by the voxel intensity mean value. The technology enables applying, via the computer, a filter onto the fourth image. The technology enables generating, via the computer, a filter mask based on the fourth image.
