Abstract: A device and system for coupling light into and out of a photonic integrated circuit. The forked grating coupler device applies a forked grating structure to the design of the diffracting lines in an integrated optics grating coupler to make the device compatible with vortex light beams to or from free space, bulk optics, or special optical fiber that can propagate vortex modes. These diffracting lines, which can be grooves, or ridges, or a photonic metamaterial discontinuity arranged in a continuous or intermittent curve, follow the forked diffraction pattern lobes over a two-dimensional surface. The resulting device can therefore absorb or radiate a vortex beam mode at near-normal incidence to a PIC and transform that vortex mode to a transverse electric (TE) or transverse magnetic (TM) waveguide mode traveling along a slab or strip optical waveguide parallel to the surface of the IC.

Abstract: An apparatus for determining blood clotting capacity comprises an actuator to cyclically move a member within a sample of blood received in a well in a tray and one of a deflection sensor and a position sensor to determine the position of the wetted member upon being acted upon by the actuator. The theoretical position of the wetted member, as determined using a known actuator force and wetted member physical data, is compared to the sensed deflection or position of the wetted member, and the resistance to movement of the wetted member caused by the blood is determined and correlated to a clotting capacity.

Single and multi-cells are deposited on, or migrate onto the nanofiber grid where the cell or cells are in contact with at least one fiber of the nanofiber grid and forces generated by the cells are observed and measured using deflection sensing methods. Furthermore, analyte-testing platforms using the nanofiber grid are described herein. Also provided are methods and apparatus including automated analyte-testing platforms using the nanofiber grid.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and a device for determining a transform block size, and can improve image compression efficiency. The method includes: obtaining, according to image block information and a splitting manner of an image block, a parameter of a transform block corresponding to the image block; and obtaining a transform block size according to the parameter of the transform block and the splitting manner of the image block. In the embodiments of the present invention, during determination of a transform block size, the transform block size is obtained according to a splitting manner of an image block and a parameter of a transform block corresponding to the image block. Therefore, a transform block matching the splitting manner of the image block can be used, improving image compression efficiency.
Abstract: A system, apparatus and methods are provided for supplying gases to a user. The supply includes a sub-therapeutic mode and a pressure support mode for delivering therapy to a user. A flow diversion device or valve switches from a first mode corresponding with the sub-therapeutic mode of the system to a second mode corresponding with the pressure support mode of the system. In the first mode, the valve opens a larger flow path between the interior of the user interface and ambient air than in the second mode.

Abstract: The present invention relates to water soluble quaternized chitosan derivatives which form hydrogel matrix with broad antimicrobial properties for the protection and coating of medical device. Hydrogel is attractive as an antimicrobial coating since its hydrophilicity intrinsically prevents the reversible nonspecific attachment of microbes. In order to achieve hydrogel formation, quaternized chitosan can be grafted with polymerizable groups, especially photocrosslinkable groups, such as methacrylates, PEG derivatives and be converted into hydrogels through a thermal or UV polymerization process. Hydrogels are hydrated cross-linked polymeric systems that contain water in an equilibrium state forming cushion water shield. The present invention is widely used in many medical devices.

Abstract: A method for delivering video data from a server in a content delivery network (CDN). Video preferences of active users of a cell are determined. Video data is cached at one or more base station nodes disposed in a radio access network (RAN), wherein the video data is cached in one or more micro-caches according to a caching policy that is based on the determined video preferences. A request is received for video data. If the cached video data includes the requested video data, the cached video data is served from the RAN cache. If the cached video data does not include the requested video data, the requested video is fetched from the CDN according to a scheduling approach that considers Quality of Experience (QoE).
