Abstract: The present disclosure describes operationally simple methods for the low temperature, catalytic activation of carboxylic acids for organic reactions, in particular for direct amidation reactions with amines. The methods involve the use of orthosubstituted arylboromc acids of the formula (I), wherein the groups R1 to R5 are as defined herein. In preferred embodiments R1 is halogen. The arylboromc acids catalyze nucleophilic 1,2-addition reactions, conjugate 1,4-addition reactions, and cycloaddition reactions, including Diels-Alder reactions involving ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an oil-pressure type fixed piston sampler for sampling a soil sample for site investigation. The oil-pressure type fixed piston sampler comprises a sampling unit (12) and an oil-pressure controller (14). Here, when the sampling unit (12) inserted into a drilled hole and a movable piston (80) moves downward, a sampling tube (1) moves downward to take a sample. The oil-pressure controller (14) connected with the sampling unit (12) controls oil pressure to cause the movable piston (80) to shift vertically. The sampling unit (12) comprises an upper head (20), a lower head (40), a piston housing (70), a rod block (100), a movable rod (90), a fixed piston (110), a fixed rod (92) and a separation rod (94). Since the sampling tube (1) takes a sample by a piston indentation method, high-quality, undisturbed samples can be obtained.

Abstract: Systems and methods selectively stimulate components of the pudendal nerve away from the sacral root to evoke desired physiologic responses in persons who lack the ability to otherwise produce these responses—e.g., maintain continence and/or produce micturition, and/or provide male/female sexuality responses, and/or provide bowel responses. The systems and methods use a multiple electrode array, or individual electrodes, placed on, in, or near the pudendal nerve. The electrode array, or individual electrodes, in association with a pulse generator, provide selective stimulation of individual fascicles within the pudendal nerve, to achieve different physiologic responses.

Abstract: A method for making a branched carbon nanotube structure includes steps, as follows: providing a substrate and forming a buffer layer on a surface of the substrate; depositing a catalyst layer on the surface of the buffer layer; putting the substrate into a reactive device; and forming the branched carbon nanotubes on the surface of the buffer layer and along the surface of the buffer layer by a chemical vapor deposition method. The material of the catalyst layer is non-wetting with the material of the buffer layer at a temperature that the branched carbon nanotube are formed. A yield of the branched carbon nanotubes in the structure can reach about 50%.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for adjusting a maximum power of a circuit having a first voltage output and a first power. The method includes the following steps: (a) obtaining a voltage coefficient by measuring the first power of the circuit and calculating an open-circuit voltage of the first voltage output; (b) estimating an estimated power based on the voltage coefficient; and (c) repeating the steps (a) to (b) for a specific number of times, in which the specific number of times is determined based on a variation of the estimated power during a time period.
Abstract: Si—Ge materials are grown on Si(100) with Ge-rich contents (Ge>50 at. %) and precise stoichiometries SiGe, SiGe2, SiGe3 and SiGe4. New hydrides with direct Si—Ge bonds derived from the family of compounds (H3Ge)xSiH4-x (x=1-4) are used to grow uniform, relaxed, and highly planar films with low defect densities at unprecedented low temperatures between about 300-450° C. At about 500-700° C., SiGex quantum dots are grown with narrow size distribution, defect-free microstructures and highly homogeneous elemental content at the atomic level. The method provides for precise control of morphology, composition, structure and strain. The grown materials possess the required characteristics for high frequency electronic and optical applications, and for templates and buffer layers for high mobility Si and Ge channel devices.

Abstract: The subject invention provides at least one nucleic acid sequence encoding an aldouronate-utilization regulon isolated from Paenibacillus sp. strain JDR-2, a bacterium which efficiently utilizes xylan and metabolizes aldouronates (methylglucuronoxylosaccharides). The subject invention also provides a means for providing a coordinately regulated process in which xylan depolymerization and product assimilation are coupled in Paenibacillus sp. strain JDR-2 to provide a favorable system for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to biobased products. Additionally, the nucleic acid sequences encoding the aldouronate-utilization regulon can be used to transform other bacteria to form organisms capable of producing a desired product (e.g., ethanol, 1-butanol, acetoin, 2,3-butanediol, 1,3-propanediol, succinate, lactate, acetate, malate or alanine) from lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract: Provided is a technique for X-ray reflection, such as an X-ray reflecting mirror, capable of achieving a high degree of smoothness of a reflecting surface, high focusing (reflecting) performance, stability in a curved surface shape, and a reduction in overall weight. A silicon plate (silicon wafer) is subjected to thermal plastic deformation to form an X-ray reflecting mirror having a reflecting surface with a stable curved surface shape. The silicon wafer can be deformed to any shape by applying a pressure thereto in a hydrogen atmosphere at a high temperature of about 1300° C. The silicon plate may be simultaneously subjected to hydrogen annealing to further reduce roughness of a silicon surface to thereby provide enhanced reflectance.
