  • Publication number: 20140082329
Abstract: Trustworthy systems require that code be validated as genuine. Most systems implement this requirement prior to execution by matching a cryptographic hash of the binary file against a reference hash value, leaving the code vulnerable to run time compromises, such as code injection, return and jump-oriented programming, and illegal linking of the code to compromised library functions. The Run-time Execution Validator (REV) validates, as the program executes, the control flow path and instructions executed along the control flow path. REV uses a signature cache integrated into the processor pipeline to perform live validation of executions, at basic block boundaries, and ensures that changes to the program state are not made by the instructions within a basic block until the control flow path into the basic block and the instructions within the basic block are both validated.

Abstract: A bio-nanowire device includes a substrate having a first surface, a first conductor, a second conductor, and a bio-nanowire. The first and second conductors are disposed on the first surface of the substrate, and are spaced apart from each other. The bio-nanowire has two ends respectively connected to the first and second conductors, and includes a nucleic acid molecule having two nucleotide segments, and a plurality of metal ions bonded between the two nucleotide segments of the nucleic acid molecule. The two nucleotide segments form a double helix structure via base pairs. When a voltage or a current is applied to the bio-nanowire, the oxidation state of the metal ions can be changed such that the non-linear electroconductive characteristic of the bio-nanowire can be controlled.

Abstract: The invention provides compositions and methods for visualizing particular tissues and delivering one or more therapeutics to that tissue using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), which are taken up and delivered to target tissues by specific monocytes in the body. The delivery of SWNT to target tissues allows the visualization of the affected tissue for diagnostics and therapy in diseases where the specific monocyte is implicated in the disease pathogenesis. These nanotubes can be conjugated to a peptide, such as RGD, which helps direct the SWNT-containing monocytes to the vascular endothelium.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatuses for performing a prenatal diagnosis of a sequence imbalance are provided. A shift (e.g. to a smaller size distribution) can signify an imbalance in certain circumstances. For example, a size distribution of fragments of nucleic acids from an at-risk chromosome can be used to determine a fetal chromosomal aneuploidy. A size ranking of different chromosomes can be used to determine changes of a rank of an at-risk chromosome from an expected ranking. Also, a difference between a statistical size value for one chromosome can be compared to a statistical size value of another chromosome to identify a significant shift in size. A genotype and haplotype of the fetus may also be determined using a size distribution to determine whether a sequence imbalance occurs in a maternal sample relative to a genotypes or haplotype of the mother, thereby providing a genotype or haplotype of the fetus.

Abstract: Provided herein are biocompatible scaffolds and methods of preparing such bioscaffolds. The methods provide a superior high surface area, interconnected nanomacroporous bioactive glass scaffold, by combining a sol-gel process and polymer sponge replication methods. The formation of a uniformly nanoporous and interconnected macroporous bioscaffold is demonstrated using a starting material comprising a 70 mol % SiO2—30 mol % CaO glass composition as an example. The bioscaffold includes a series of open, interconnected macropores with size from 300 to 600 ?m, as desired for tissue ingrowth and vascularization. At the same time, coexisting nanopores provide high-specific surface area (>150 m2/g), which is needed for enhancing the structure's degradation rate. These bioscaffolds hold promise for applications in hard tissue engineering.

An LP based storage and retrieval system can partition multimedia data into an integral number of segments. Further, the LP based storage and retrieval system can store a first amount of the integral number of segments in a storage device of storage devices of a storage network in response to a determination that a storage size of the storage device satisfies a first condition with respect to the first amount of the integral number of segments. Furthermore, such system can store a segment of a second amount of the integral number of segments in a remote storage device of the remote storage devices in response to a determination that the segment satisfies a second condition with respect to a defined number of remote storage devices of the storage devices that have stored the segment.
