Abstract: An organic light emitting diode (OLED) uses a ?-conjugated polymer emissive layer (MEH-PPV) sandwiched between two semitransparent electrodes. The preferred embodiment utilizes an optically thin gold film anode, whereas the cathode was in the form of an optically thick aluminum (Al) film with patterned periodic subwavelength 2D hole array that showed anomalous transmission in the spectral range of the polymer photoluminescence band. At similar current densities we obtained a seven-fold electroluminescence efficiency enhancement with the patterned Al device compared with a control device based on unperforated Al electrode.

Abstract: A new fractionation device shows desirable features for exploratory screening and biomarker discovery. The constituent MSCs may be tailored for desired pore sizes and surface properties and for the sequestration and enrichment of extremely low abundant protein and peptides in desired ranges of the mass/charge spectrum. The MSCs are effective in yielding reproducible extracts from complex biological samples as small as 10 ?l in a time as short as 30 minutes. They are inexpensive to manufacture, and allow for scaled up production to attain the simultaneous processing of a large number of samples. The MSCs are multiplexed, label-free diagnostic tools with the potential of biological recognition moiety modification for enhanced specificity. The MSCs may store, protect and stabilize biological fluids, enabling the simplified and cost-effective collection and transportation of clinical samples.

Abstract: A feedback light tuning device and the optical communication system and method using the same are provided. By tuning the feedback light, the mechanism can completely correct the mean-wavelength drift up to 30 nm or 19400 ppm. The mechanism can be applied to various harsh environments which cause the mean-wavelength drift, so as to achieve a required stable mean-wavelength for the light source and to increase the acceptable range of radiation dose.
Abstract: A platform is proposed for automated analysis of retinal images, for obtaining from them information characterizing retinal blood vessels which may be useful in forming a diagnosis of a medical condition. A first aspect of the invention proposes that a plurality of characteristics of the retina are extracted, in order to provide data which is useful for enabling an evaluation of cardiovascular risk prediction, or even diagnosis of a cardiovascular condition. A second aspect uses fractal analysis of retinal images to provide vascular disease risk prediction, such as, but not limited to, diabetes and hypertension.
Abstract: Various methods for tracking and recognition with rotation invariant feature descriptors are provided. One example method includes generating an image pyramid of an image frame, detecting a plurality of interest points within the image pyramid, and extracting feature descriptors for each respective interest point. According to some example embodiments, the feature descriptors are rotation invariant. Further, the example method may also include tracking movement by matching the feature descriptors to feature descriptors of a previous frame and performing recognition of an object within the image frame based on the feature descriptors. Related example methods and example apparatuses are also provided.

Abstract: A double-gate vertical channel transistor (DGVC) structure is described which is particularly well suited for Dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory (e.g., capacitorless DRAM) wherein the memory cell occupies a small cell area of 4F2, and provides beneficial retention properties including immunity to disturbances. The vertical transistors are arranged in an alternating gate-facing orientation, with a common source formed on a first end and separate drains on their second ends. Word lines comprise alternating front gates and back gates shared by columns of gate-facing transistors on each side of it. The DGVC cell provides enhanced scalability allowing the continued scaling of DRAM technology and can be fabricated using low-cost semiconductor materials and existing fabrication techniques. Fabrication techniques and array biasing are also described for the DGVC cell arrays.

Abstract: We found mutations of the R132 residue of isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) in the majority of grade II and III astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas as well as in glioblastomas that develop from these lower grade lesions. Those tumors without mutations in IDH1 often had mutations at the analogous R172 residue of the closely related IDH2 gene. These findings have important implications for the pathogenesis and diagnosis of malignant gliomas.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for purifying immunogenic, prophylactically and therapeutically effective complexes of modified heat shock proteins noncovalently associated with antigenic peptides of cancer or infected cells. The claimed methods comprise the constructing of a nucleotide sequence encoding a secretable modified heat shock protein, expressing the sequence in an appropriate host cell, recovering the immunogenic complexes from the cell culture and the cells, and purifying the immunogenic complexes by affinity chromatography. Large amounts of such immunogenic complexes can be obtained by large-scale culturing of host cells containing the genetic sequence. The complexes can be used as a vaccine to elicit specific immune responses against cancer or infected cells, and to treat or prevent cancer or infectious diseases.
