Abstract: An evanescent filed based sensor uses a detector for sensing variations in properties of a fluid flowing in a boundary layer adjacent to the detector. The detector comprises an optical waveguide in the form of an optical fiber having a core layer covered by a cladding layer and having a substantially D-shaped cross section defining a planar surface with an optical grating pattern thereon. When a beam of laser light is directed through the detector as an input, variations in an output of the beam of laser light are indicative of changes in fluid pressure or density in the boundary layer or immediate region adjacent to the grating of the optical waveguide.

Abstract: Coaxial and twisted pair conductive yarn structures reduce signal crosstalk between adjacent lines in woven electrical networks. A coaxial conductive yarn structure includes an inner conductive yarn having a plurality of conductive strands twisted together. An outer conductive yarn is wrapped around the inner conductive yarn. An insulating layer separates the inner and outer yarns. A twisted pair conductive yarn structure includes first and second conductive yarns, each including a plurality of conductive strands being twisted together. The first and second conductive yarns are twisted together to form a helical structure. In a woven electrical network, at least one conductor of adjacent conductive yarn structures is connected to ground to reduce signal crosstalk. Coaxial and twisted pair yarn structures may also be formed simultaneously with weaving or knitting the threads that make up the structures into a fabric.

Abstract: A method and means are provided for actively protecting a substrate from particulate contamination during thin film deposition. An intense beam of ions or ionized clusters is directed through the space immediately in front of the surface being coated, and the kinetic energy of the ions is used to deflect any approaching particle defects to the side, preventing them from reaching the surface being coated.

Abstract: An actuation system for assisting the operation of a natural heart that includes a dome structure configured for being coupled with a ventricular portion of the heart. The dome structure has at least one opening formed therein. The dome structure, proximate the opening, is configured to interface with at least one of an atrial chamber and a great vessel of the heart. A stabilizing element or an actuating element may be anchored to the dome structure for engaging a portion of the heart.
Abstract: Noninvasively focusing acoustical energy on a mass such as a tumor within tissue to reduce or eliminate the mass. The presence of the mass in the tissue is detected by applying acoustic energy to the substance. The mass is localized to determine its position. Temporal signatures are developed to drive the acoustical energy on the mass. Dynamic focusing of the acoustical energy on the mass to reduce or eliminate it is accomplished utilizing the temporal signatures.

Abstract: A low-power receiver architecture of use in direct sequence spread spectrum communications system receivers, such as in a code division multiple access system, is provided. The receiver employs analog correlation, wherein its analog-digital, converters are able to operate at the system symbol rate, and the requirement for finite impulse response filters is obviated. The low-power receiver architecture is also applicable as a front-end structure for multiple-mode receivers.

Abstract: A deformation measuring method using electronic speckle pattern interferometry comprises the steps of subtracting an average intensity from the intensity in a time domain at each point of a speckle pattern image so as to compute the cosine component of intensity; subjecting the cosine component to Hilbert transform in a temporal domain so as to compute the sine component of intensity; determining the arctangent of the ratio between thus computed sine and cosine components so as to determine an object phase; carrying out an unwrapping operation; and outputting three-dimensional deformation distribution data in a displayable mode.

Abstract: This invention provides novel assays that are prognostic and/or diagnostic for atherosclerosis or risk of atherosclerosis. It was discovered that high density lipoprotein (HDL) or components thereof can prevent the oxidation of lipids (e.g. lipids present in LDLs) and can also repair (reduce) already oxidized lipids and thereby reduce the inflammatory response associated with and characteristic of atherosclerotic plaque formation. Moreover it was a discovery of this invention that individuals vary in the ability of their HDL to afford such protection. Thus an assay of HDL protective and/or repair activity provides a highly effective assay for risk of atherosclerosis and its associated pathologies and such assays are provided herein.

Abstract: A remote control device is which key use is monitored. A command key, representative of an appliance function, may be correlated to a target appliance that is determined, as a function of the monitored key use, to be the most likely intended recipient of a command to perform that appliance function. An activity key may also be programmed so as to perform a series of actions that are representative of a sequence of monitored key uses.

Abstract: The invention provides methods for preventing or delaying the development of cancer by administering free radical-generating agents to a subject. Representative free radical-generating agents include endoperoxide compounds, such as endoperoxides bearing sesquiterpene compounds such as artemisinin and its analogs, arteflene and its analogs, 1,2,4-trioxanes and 1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes. Intracellular iron concentrations may be enhanced by the administration of iron salts or complexes.
Abstract: A method for preparing precursors for producing high density monolithic aerogels. The method enables fabrication of transparent porous glass monoliths, with the porosity or density controlled by adjusting the ratio of water to monomer. By this adjustment, syneresis is increased or minimized. The method involves either a single step precursor or a two step precursor where a base is added to the single step precursor after hydrolysis has occurred. Monolithic metal oxide aerogels with densities between 0.3 g/cc to 1.5 g/cc have been produced using this method.
