  • Patent number: 6691554
Abstract: A gas sensor for detection of oxidizing and reducing gases, including O2, CO2, CO, and H2, monitors the partial pressure of a gas to be detected by measuring the temperature rise of an oxide-thin-film-coated metallic line in response to an applied electrical current. For a fixed input power, the temperature rise of the metallic line is inversely proportional to the thermal conductivity of the oxide coating. The oxide coating contains multi-valent cation species that change their valence, and hence the oxygen stoichiometry of the coating, in response to changes in the partial pressure of the detected gas. Since the thermal conductivity of the coating is dependent on its oxygen stoichiometry, the temperature rise of the metallic line depends on the partial pressure of the detected gas. Nanocrystalline (<100 nm grain size) oxide coatings yield faster sensor response times than conventional larger-grained coatings due to faster oxygen diffusion along grain boundaries rather than through grain interiors.

  • Patent number: 6692632
Abstract: A method of reacting chemicals comprising the exposure of the reactants to ultrasound and electrochemical energies in the presence of a metal or metal salt and hydrogen peroxide. HO* radicals are efficiently formed and react with a carbon-based reactant to form a carbon radical which then reacts with other reactants or may dimerize. The invention regenerates the metal ions and may be performed using no special facilities. Increased product yield was achieved for a number of hydroxylation reactions.

  • Patent number: 6692508
Abstract: A clot and foreign body removal device is described which comprises a catheter with at least one lumen. Located within the catheter is a clot capture coil that is connected to an insertion mandrel. In one embodiment, the clot capture coil is made out of a solid elastic or superelastic material which has shape memory, preferably nitinol. The elasticity or superelasticity of the coil allows it to be deformed within the catheter and to then reform its original coil configuration when the coil is moved outside of the catheter lumen. In another embodiment the coil is a biphasic coil which changes shape upon heating or passing an electric current. Once the coil configuration has been established, the coil can be used to ensnare and corkscrew a clot in a vessel. A clot is extracted from the vessel by moving the clot capture coil and catheter proximally until the clot can be removed or released into a different vessel that does not perfuse a critical organ.

  • Patent number: 6693340
Abstract: A lateral semiconductor device has a semiconductor layer on an insulating layer on a semiconductor substrate. The semiconductor layer has a region of a first conduction type and a region of a second conduction type with a drift region therebetween. The drift region is provided by a region of the first conduction type and a region of the second conduction type. The first and second conduction type drift regions are so arranged that when a reverse voltage bias is applied across the first and second conduction type regions of the semiconductor layer, the second conduction type drift region has an excess of charge relative to the first conduction type drift region which varies substantially linearly from the end of the drift region towards the first conduction type region of the semiconductor layer to the end of the drift region towards the second conduction type region of the semiconductor layer.

  • Patent number: 6692627
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and a process for separation and resolution of particles suspended in, or molecules dissolved in, a sample mixture or solution using electrical field flow fractionation (EFFF). Fractionation of individual components in the mixture/solution is obtained by the interaction of particles/molecules with an electric field applied perpendicular to the flow direction, and externally to the fractionation channel. The plate electrodes are electrically isolated from the sample and carrier within a thin, non-permeable, insulating coating on the inside surfaces electrodes. This coating forms a barrier between the solution phase and the electric circuit used to generate the working electric field. The flow channel is formed by sandwiching a shaped insulating gasket between the two parallel plate electrodes. The side walls of the channel are defined then by the inside walls of the shaped, insulating gasket.
