  • Patent number: 6756786
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for detecting a line-to-ground fault location in power network, and more particularly, detecting the line-to-ground fault location by direct 3-phase circuit analysis without using a symmetrical component transformation, so even in an unbalanced 3-phase circuit, the line-to-ground fault location can be accurately detected. In the method using direct 3-phase circuit analysis of this invention, inverse lemma is used to simplify matrix inversion calculations, thus the line-to-ground fault location can be easily and accurately determined even in the case of an unbalanced network without symmetrical component transformation.

  • Publication number: 20040119010
Abstract: The present invention provides for methods of quantitating the amounts of proteins or peptides, including those that are closely related isoforms, using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Measurement of protein concentrations in vivo has been extremely difficult and problematic, and protein concentrations have not been shown to correlate well with mRNA levels, the standard used in the past. The present invention overcomes the deficiencies of prior methodologies by taking advantage of MALDI-TOF-MS technology and applying it to proteins and peptides in a way that allows for accurate, quantitative measurement in vivo of protein or peptide concentrations.

  • Publication number: 20040120661
Abstract: A manufacturing apparatus and method of a fiber coupler is provided. A movable electric arc is employed to fuse more than two stacked fibers for manufacturing a fiber coupler having a small size and good environment stability. It is advantageous that the fiber coupler can be used in a SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) communication system, and the method also be used to manufacture the all-fiber CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) multiplexer which covers the E-band wavelengths and the sub-components of the OADM (Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer). And, all these functions are difficult to be achieved by the conventional techniques.

  • Publication number: 20040121384
Abstract: Diagnostic and therapeutic applications for certain types of cancer and precancerous conditions, including those deriving from hematologic cells, are described. Of particular interest are those cancers and precancerous conditions associated with increased signaling in the RAS-MAP kinase pathway. The diagnostic and therapeutic applications described herein are based on certain mutations in the protein tyrosine phosphatase gene PTPN11 and its expression product, PTPN11, promoting a gain-of-function in PTPN11 activity. Also described are nucleotide sequences, amino acid sequences, probes, and primers related to PTPN11 and PTPN11 variants, and cells expressing such variants.

  • Publication number: 20040122133
Abstract: A thermoplastic polymer composition reinforced with fibers such as cellulose or other fillers, particularly from natural sources, and a process for manufacturing the composition are disclosed. The preferred process for making the fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composition comprises melting a high melting temperature thermoplastic polymer, mixing the melted thermoplastic polymer with an organic or inorganic salt to reduce the melting temperature of the melted thermoplastic polymer to a melting temperature which does not degrade the fibers, and then adding the fibers to the reduced melting temperature thermoplastic polymer-salt mixture to produce the natural fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composition. The natural fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composition can then be melted at the reduced melting temperature to manufacture a plurality of articles.

  • Publication number: 20040119942
Abstract: Methods, systems, and media relating the display of scattering and/or absorption characteristics of an optical medium. For scattering measurements, a Hartmann-Shack calibration image of a measurement system is acquired to define a first plurality of point spread functions. A Hartmann-Shack test image of the medium is acquired to define a second plurality of point spread functions. A shift is determined between the test image and the calibration image. A point spread of each of the second plurality of point spread functions is measured, each of the second plurality of point spread functions including a component due to optical aberration of the medium and a component due to scatter. The component due to optical aberration is determined using the shift. The component due to optical aberration is deconvolved to determine the component due to scatter. A display of the local scattering characteristics is generated using the component due to scatter.
