  • Patent number: 6795705
Abstract: A system for providing redundant home agents comprises a plurality of home agents, the home agents create mobility binding registrations with outside PDSNs. The system also includes a redundant home agent, the redundant home agent is coupled to said plurality of home agents. A home agent control node is coupled to the plurality of home agents and sends registration requests to the home agents. The home agent control node contains a detector for determining a failure in any of the plurality of home agents. The home agent control node also contains a mobility binding registration and downloads the mobility binding registration to the redundant home agent upon the detection of a failure in one of the plurality of home agents.

Abstract: Multiple home agents for a home agent service provider network are implemented in a single computing platform in software as multiple virtual home agents. Each home agent is assigned or dedicated to a single virtual private network. Any number of home agents can be realized in the computing platform by multiple instantiations of a home agent program or code, and by providing unique IP addresses for each instantiation. Each home agent runs independently, and is independently configured and managed by the subscriber of the virtual private network service, freeing the service provider of having to manage and supervise low level processing tasks and customization features that the subscribers may want. In a representative embodiment, the computing platform comprises a router having a general purpose-computing platform.

  • Patent number: 6774821
Abstract: A Frequency Mapping Coding (FMC) scheme varies the application of error correction redundancy to transmitted data based on the channel transmission characteristics and the likelihood of error resulting from characteristics of the data stream being transmitted over the channel. The FMC is an error correction coding scheme making use of the non-linear feed-back mechanism and variable bit input step size to control redundancy applied. The FMC scheme accommodates the non-symmetrical nature of the SNR in bandwidth limited communications environments such as DSL to allow application of IQ based modulation, such as QAM, to these channels and is flexible for varying channel characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20040136337
Abstract: In mobile IP wireless data networking, methods are described for correctly routing packets through a foreign agent to or from wireless nodes where the wireless nodes have the same home network IP address. Instead of using normal IP routing, the foreign agent uniquely identifies the wireless node's home network IP address and home agent IP address with a PPP link address associated with a PPP link between the foreign agent and the wireless node. This association between PPP link addresses, home agent IP addresses, and home network IP addresses, is preferably implemented in software as a table stored in the foreign agent. The routing of packets through the foreign agent to the mobile nodes is performed by reference to the table. The table allows the foreign agent to correctly and efficiently route packets in the situation where multiple wireless nodes are registered with the foreign agent, but more than one of the wireless nodes have the same home network IP address.

  • Patent number: 6738362
Abstract: A mobile Internet Protocol service provider system implements home agent functionality in two separate devices. One device, the home registration agent, is devoted to registration of the mobile node. The other device, the home tunneling agent, is devoted to tunneling and routing functions for the foreign agent. The home registration agent can be a general purpose computer. The home tunneling agent is preferably implemented in a robust routing device, such as an IP switch or router. Multiple home tunneling agents or home registration agents can be implemented in the respective devices as multiple instantiations of a home registration agent or home tunneling agent software program. Foreign agent functionality for mobile IP networking can also be split into separate devices.

  • Patent number: 6707809
Abstract: Method for forwarding data from a source of the data to a mobile wireless node, such as a portable computing device, that undergoes a transition to an idle state. A home agent receives the data from the source. The home agent determines that there is no current or active mobility binding record for the mobile node, so it sends a data indication message to a home agent control node. The home agent control node looks up the mobile node in an idle mobility binding record database and identifies the last foreign agent that the idle mobile node was connected to. The home agent control node sends a page request to the identified foreign agent. If the mobile node responds to the page within a predetermined period of time, it will establish a connection with the foreign agent. Data is tunneled from the home agent to the foreign agent for delivery to the mobile node.

  • Patent number: 6701152
Abstract: Method of assigning a fixed subscriber unit (FSU) to communicate with a particular base station and a system including a plurality of wireless FSUs. The system includes a plurality of base stations, which are coupled to a telecommunications network. Each FSU is coupled to a subscriber communication device, and each FSU is configured to communicate wirelessly with at least a base station. The FSU measures signal strength of a set of base stations. The FSU sends a message with the measured signal strength of the set of base stations to a base station. Circuitry coupled to the base station determines at least a base station to which the FSU is to be assigned based on the message and additional information in the circuitry coupled to the base station. In response to the determining by the circuitry coupled to the base station, the base station sends to the FSU a message including the base station to which the FSU is to be assigned.

  • Patent number: 6650619
Abstract: A system for increasing call capacity of an internet telephony system in an emergency mode, such as where there is a surge of call requests in a particular region. A management system in the internet telephony system may detect the presence of an actual or potential state of congestion of call traffic and/or signaling traffic. In order to admit a higher rate of call traffic to the telephony system, action is taken to reduce the workload of the signaling system, in order to allow the telephony system to focus more on serving call requests. For example, the signaling system may reduce the rate of signaling request messages processed with respect to requested and ongoing calls and/or reduce the amount of processing involved in handling such messages.

  • Patent number: 6639915
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a system (900) includes a content addressable memory (CAM) address system (910) that receives voice packet data, and in response thereto, generates a channel number value (CHANNEL#). The CHANNEL# value can be used to generate a base address value for a voice packet buffer memory system (912). A base address value will correspond to a particular voice channel. The use of the CAM address system (910) can enable processing of voice data packets “on-the-fly,” allowing for rapid processing of voice data transmitted over a network structure and/or result in more efficient use of a buffer memory that stores voice data.
