  • Patent number: 5884588
Abstract: The cooling circuit of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle includes a thermally insulated reservoir having an inlet duct and an outlet duct. These ducts are connected to the mass of air in a head space either within the expansion vessel in the cooling circuit or within the reservoir itself, in such a way that the inlet and outlet ducts become filled with air when the motor is stopped. This air then physically separates the liquid in the reservoir from that contained in the rest of the circuit, so reducing heat losses.

  • Patent number: 5829268
Abstract: A multi-chamber expansion device for a vehicle cooling or heating circuit consists of a single vessel in which the three successive chambers of the expansion device are aligned horizontally within a rigid elongate casing, which is formed by two moulded hollow members welded together along their respective peripheral edges in a vertical junction plane. These edges are thickened and formed with a groove which extends over substantially the whole periphery of the vessel, at the joint between the two casing members. This groove is interrupted by integral bridges so as to define ducts which connect together, firstly the first and second chambers, and secondly the second and third chambers, through a pressure-limiting valve.

  • Patent number: 5765632
Abstract: A plate type heat exchanger, for effecting heat transfer between a first fluid and a second fluid, comprises a casing through which the second fluid flows, together with a stack of plates arranged in pairs alternately within the casing and along a stacking axis. The plates of each pair define between them a flow passage for the first fluid. Each plate has two communication apertures formed through it, to enable the first fluid to flow between the successive pairs of plates. Perturbator elements are arranged in these flow passages for perturbing the flow of fluid in the latter. Each plate is substantially square, with its communication apertures being aligned with each other in an alignment direction parallel to two sides of the square. Each perturbator element comprises lines of corrugations which extend in a direction at right angles to the alignment direction. The invention is applicable especially to oil coolers for motor vehicles.

  • Patent number: 5765634
Abstract: A fabricated flat heat exchanger tube, applicable especially to cooling radiators for motor vehicle engines, is divided into two by a reinforcing partition. The partition consists of a pleat extending into the interior of the tube and formed in the sheet metal strip from which the tube is fabricated. The regions of the strip which are adjacent to the pleat constitute a first main wall of the tube, while its two terminal or marginal regions are bent back at 180 degrees into the interior of the tube from the adjacent regions that constitute the second main wall of the tube. These terminal regions are brazed sealingly to the pleat. The outer dimensions of the tube in transverse cross section, and the quality of brazing, do not depend on the exact width of strip.
