The avatar may be registered in an enterprise and interaction with a service may occur based on the information defining the avatar.

Abstract: An approach for supporting automated fault isolation and recovery is provided. A workflow event corresponding to an alarm indicative of a fault within a customer network is generated. Recovery from the fault is automated according to the workflow event. Alarm information is transmitted to a maintenance management system, wherein the alarm information specifies information about the alarm. A maintenance event information from the maintenance management system is received in response to the transmitted alarm information. Additionally, it is determined whether the alarm is correlated to a maintenance event based on the maintenance event information. Automated handling of the alarm is differentiated based on the correlation.

Abstract: An approach is provided for supporting telephony services over a data network. A communication network establishes a voice session from a calling station to a called station associated with a user. A service platform, in communication with the communication network, obtains Caller ID information corresponding to the voice session, and determines an instant communication client of the user. The Caller ID information is transmitted over the data network to the instant communication client for display of the Caller ID information.

Abstract: A user, using, for example, a web browser and application server technology, is able to consolidate and present session information, for example, from a multi-model session on a voice recognition system. For example, a web browser can be used to display consolidated session information comprising network information, call logs, location database information, recorded user utterances, voice portal prompts, or any other information associated with an interactive voice response system.

Abstract: Disclosed is an application infrastructure platform (AIP) having an application service provider (ASP) environment including multiple ASP systems providing application services to customers, and a common services environment including hardware and software and management systems providing to the ASP systems applications and integrated application, back-office, and management services used by the ASP systems in delivering their application services to their customers. In another aspect, the AIP is associated with a development and test bed environment which conducts product and service development and testing.

Abstract: A system processes calls in an Internet Protocol (IP) communications network. The system includes a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) database, an LDAP sever, and a redirect server. The LDAP database stores a group of IP communication service attributes. The LDAP server receive a request for a database update, extracts the group of IP communication service attributes from the LDAP database, and transfers the extracted IP communication service attributes to the redirect server. The redirect server stores the extracted IP communication service attributes and processes a call using the stored IP communication service attributes.

Abstract: A method for predicting an optical fiber performance parameter includes measuring N values for the optical fiber performance parameter at N stages during manufacture or installation of a first optical fiber, where N is an integer. A first set of correlation values is generated representing shifts in the measured optical fiber performance parameter values at the N stages. An installed value of the optical fiber performance parameter is estimated for a second optical fiber based on the first set of generated correlation values and at least one measured optical fiber performance parameter value associated with the second optical fiber.

Abstract: A method for predicting polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in an installed optical fiber. Values of PMD are measured for a first optical fiber at various points in time during the manufacture and installation of the first optical fiber. Values of PMD are identified that correspond to sensitive ones of the various points in time. A set of correlation coefficients is calculated based on the values of PMD corresponding to the sensitive ones of the various points in time. An installed value of PMD for a second optical fiber is predicted based on the set of correlation coefficients.

Abstract: An approach provides detection of unauthorized use of data services. The number of data calls for access to a data network is tracked over a predetermined time period, and the cumulative duration of the data calls is determined. Thereafter, a determination is made as to whether the number of the data calls and the cumulative duration satisfy, respectively, a first threshold and a second threshold. A potential fraudulent use of the account is determined, if the thresholds are satisfied.

Abstract: An approach is disclosed for providing an extended directory service over a communication system including a data network and a telephony network. A subscriber submits a request for directory information to the communication system according to a first communication mode. The system accesses a directory among multiple directories in response to the request, wherein the directories include an internal directory associated with the subscriber and an external directory not associated with the subscriber. The directory information from the selected directory is retrieved and forwarded to the subscriber according to a second communication mode.

Abstract: A network device used to provide network security includes an interface configured to receive data transmitted over a network. The network device also includes a firewall, intrusion detection logic and forwarding logic. The firewall, intrusion detection logic and forwarding logic process the received data to determine whether the data contains malicious content. When the data contains malicious content, the data may be dropped before it reaches a user device to which the received data was sent. Optionally, the network device may interact with an external device in order to make the forwarding decision. In addition, the network device may subscribe to services offered by the external device to receive updated security information.

Abstract: A Global Information Bus (GIB) architecture is an infrastructure for deploying and managing individual services on a global scale. The GIB is a series of services that may change from one execution to another, finding and collaborating with other services dynamically. This series of collaborating services may start to resemble an ecosystem, and GIB architecture may maintain the interconnectedness and stability of this ecosystem as it continually changes. To that end, the GIB includes an enterprise repository service for storing related information related to services running in the enterprise where the enterprise consists of a group of network domains.

Abstract: A computerized visitation registration and scheduling system provides the department of corrections the ability to have inmates and visitors schedule visits through an automated interface, such as a telephone interface, or the internet. The system allows, for example, the ability for potential visitors to perform a registration process with little to no manual overhead requirements of department of corrections employees. Secondly, potential visitors, once approved, are able to schedule inmate visits without necessarily having to burden department of corrections employees.

Abstract: An approach for supporting telephony services for use over a data network that includes at least one of the Internet and a private Intranet is disclosed. A communications system includes a switch that is coupled to a telephone network and is configured to determine presence of a dialing prefix of a call. The system also includes a gateway that is coupled to the data network and configured to communicate with the switch. The switch selectively routes the call based upon the presence of the dialing prefix to the gateway.

The method can include routing an emergency call originating from internet protocol telephony to a data network via a routing device which may include an identifier. The method can include transferring the routed emergency call to a predetermined public service answering point based on the identifier.

Abstract: An approach for establishing a communication session according to a subscriber profile that is automatically updated is disclosed. A locator device, which is associated with a subscriber and includes a Global Positioning System (GPS) transponder, outputs geographic information that is transmitted to a communications network for establishing the communication session. The geographic information corresponds to one of a plurality of addresses specified in the subscriber profile to set a current address. The addresses are associated with a plurality of devices adapted to complete the communication session. The one address is designated as the current address if the geographic information corresponds to the one address, otherwise the current address is set to a default address, wherein the communication session is established based on the current address.

The gaming package may include an operating system, a script for detecting a hardware configuration of the device, software for accessing a network, and peering software. The processor may be further configured to establish a peer-to-peer gaming session with another device over the network.

Abstract: A communications manager in a telecommunications transaction server communicates service request messages and service response messages between one or more remotely executing service request processes and one or more service applications executing on the transaction server. A main thread in the communications manager monitors connections requests and initializes other threads. A unique logical communications connection is established between one of the service request processes and the communications manager. The communications manager creates both a read thread and a write thread for each logical communication connection that is validated and active. The read thread communicates service request messages from a service request process to an appropriate service application. The write thread communications service response messages from the service application to the service request process that issues the service request message.

Abstract: An approach provides interdomain traversal to support packetized voice transmissions. A centralized data store, maintained by a service provider, stores one or more user identifiers and an associated directory number. The centralized data store also stores routing information including one or more communication paths corresponding to the user identifier, wherein the routing information includes a data path or a circuit-switched path for establishing a call to the user. In response to a request for establishing the call to the directory number, the data store retrieves the routing information for use to establish the call.
