Abstract: Systems and methods for error resilient transmission, rate control, and random access in video communication systems that use sealable video coding are provided. Error resilience is obtained by using information from low resolution layers to conceal or compensate loss of high resolution layer information. The same mechanism is used for rate control by selectively eliminating high resolution layer information from transmitted signals, which elimination can be compensated at the receiver using information from low resolution layers. Further, random access or switching between low and high resolutions is also achieved by using information from low resolution layers to compensate for high resolution spatial layer packets that may have not been received prior to the switching time.

Abstract: Systems and methods for performing videoconferencing using split endpoints are disclosed herein. These endpoints can include a Main Unit and a Satellite Unit that are associated with each other, and where the tasks of video and audio encoding and decoding are separated between the two. In some embodiment the Main Unit performs video and audio encoding, and the Satellite Unit performs video and audio decoding. In some embodiments the Satellite Unit obtains media date through its associated Main Unit, whereas in other embodiments the Satellite Unit obtains media data directly from the Server.

Abstract: Systems and methods for performing data entry in videoconferencing and other systems that use remote controls and other non keyboard-based user interface devices. In some embodiments, the keys of a numeric keypad are associated with letters and symbols, such that when a number key is pressed the system displays a selection of choices in a spatial configuration, including the number pressed as well as additional character choices. Users can use navigation buttons to move the selection to any one of the displayed characters and select it, thus minimizing the number of remote control operations for data entry.

Abstract: Techniques for video decoding include cross-layer prediction from a base layer to an SNR or spatial enhancement layer of spatial intra prediction mode information. In one example embodiment, the Most Probable Mode (MPM) for intra prediction of an enhancement layer block is predicted from the spatially corresponding base layer block.
Abstract: Systems and methods for error resilient transmission and for random access in video communication systems are provided. The video communication systems are based on single-layer, scalable video, or simulcast video coding with temporal scalability, which may be used in video communication systems. A set of video frames or pictures in a video signal transmission is designated for reliable or guaranteed delivery to receivers using secure or high reliability links, or by retransmission techniques. The reliably-delivered video frames are used as reference pictures for resynchronization of receivers with the transmitted video signal after error incidence and for random access.

Abstract: An unused value of the general_profile_space syntax element can be used to indicate that a layer with a non-zero value of nuh_layer_id in a multi-layer bitstream is otherwise conforming to a profile.
Abstract: The disclosed subject matter describes a new pattern description that can be part of an SEI message or a parameter set, and can be used to describe a temporal picture coding structure and associated bitrates and frame rates. The knowledge of the coding structure can benefit transraters, bitstream extractors, and digital video recorders. Decoders can utilize the coding structure information for example, to decode pictures in parallel, using multiple threads/cores.
Abstract: Systems and methods for conducting a multi-endpoint video signal conference are provided. Conferencing endpoints are linked by pairs of a reliable and a less reliable communication channel. Conference video signals are scaleable coded in base layer and enhancement layers format. Video signal base layers, which correspond to a minimum picture quality, are communicated over reliable channels. The video signal enhancements layers may be communicated over the less reliable channels. A conference server mediates the switching of video layer information from transmitting endpoints to receiving endpoints without any intermediate coding or re-coding operations. The video conference can be integrated with an audio conference using either scalable coded audio signals or non-scaleable coded audio signals.

Abstract: The present invention provides techniques for directing the gaze of a subject whose image is captured by a camera, including the direction in which the subject looks, or the distance between the subject and the camera, in such a way that a visually appealing image can be captured by the camera, where a media professional (e.g., an interviewer or a director) or other person knowledgeable in media best practices is non co-located with the subject. The techniques enable the media professional to provide visual hints both manually and automatically to the remotely located subject.

Abstract: A method for updating at least one data element in a conference is disclosed. The conference can include a first node having at least a first server but no endpoints; a second node coupled to the first node, the second node having at least a second server but no endpoints; a first endpoint coupled to the first server; and a second endpoint coupled to the second server. The first and second nodes can form a free tree topology. In such a conference, an exemplary method includes sending an initial update from either (a) the first server belonging to the first node, or (b) the first endpoint, to the second server belonging to the second node; receiving the initial update by the second server; and sending, by the second server, the content of the initial update as an update to at least one of a third server or the second endpoint.

Abstract: The disclosed subject matter provides techniques for coding overlays in a scalable bitstream environment. H.265's Video Parameter Set (VPS) may be augmented to include syntax elements indicative of a type of an auxiliary picture, which can, for example, be an overlay picture, an overlay layout, an alpha picture (which controls semi-transparency of pictures), and so on. A Supplementary Enhancement Information (SEI-) message may be used to describe the overlay layout and associate the aux type layers.

Abstract: The disclosed subject matter, in one embodiment, provides techniques to signal inter-layer texture and motion prediction from different direct dependent reference layers. In certain exemplary arrangements, techniques are provided which include one or more syntax elements in a high level syntax structure, e.g., the slice segment header, indicating such different direct dependent reference layer(s).
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting a plurality of video signals scalably coded into layers including a base layer and one or more enhancement layers and associated audio signals, if any, over a communication network for presentation to one or more end users. A layout to display the plurality of video signals is determined based on a set of criteria and only the data of the video signal layers that are necessary for displaying the video signals in the determined layout, and any associated audio signals, is selectively transmitted over the communication network.
