  • Patent number: 5946984
Abstract: An apparatus for gear shifting control with improved shift quality during gear shifting includes a gearbox unit containing at least one gear branch for power transfer via a hydrodynamic clutch. The hydrodynamic clutch can be coupled in series with a mechanical gearing part containing a device for realizing at least two speeds. In the course of power transfer via the hydrodynamic clutch during a gear shift operation between two mechanical speeds, the fill factor of the hydrodynamic clutch is so altered that a variable which at least indirectly characterizes the rotational speed of the primary bucket wheel of the hydrodynamic clutch is held substantially constant over a certain range of the gear shift operation.

  • Patent number: 5944160
Abstract: A drive unit for a motor vehicle having an engine; a transmission featuring a transmission housing; and a retarder featuring a rotor and a stator. A retarder shaft is provided that is supported by two bearings which are offset along the axial length of the retarder shaft. At least one of the bearings ("outside bearing") is supported by a wall ("outside wall") of the transmission housing. The retarder shaft protrudes freely beyond the outside wall of the transmission housing. Disposed on the retarder shaft, outside the outer bearing, on the outside wall, is a sealing component. The sealing component seals the clearance between the retarder (or pinion) shaft and the outside wall, preventing passage therethrough of the transmission oil and the operating medium of the retarder.

  • Patent number: 5879265
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the operation of a vehicle with a plurality of electric motors includes an electric motor assigned to each wheel of an axle of the vehicle. Attached to each of the electric motors is a shiftable transmission (at least two-speeds). Shifting of a transmission is performed as a function of the total efficiency of the particular motor when reaching a predetermined shifting point. The transmissions attached to the electric motors are shifted, delayed in time. The shifting of the transmission attached to a first electric motor is monitored and the shifting of a transmission attached to a second motor is performed only when the shifting of the first transmission is completed. • Patent number: 5657723
Abstract: The present invention involves a drive unit, specifically a drive unit for a motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine, a cooling system with fan and a hydrodynamic retarder with a stator, rotor and housing. The retarder is located within a space bounded on one side by the front of the crankcase, on a second side by the fan shaft which runs parallel to the engine shaft, and on a third side by the rear edge of the fan wheel. Viewed from the front, the retarder is substantially located within the fly circle of the fan wheel whereby the air flow generated by the fan wheel removes heat, generated by braking actions, from the housing of the retarder. The retarder housing comprises a bell and a cover body. The cover body defines a chamber having two outlets and an inlet. The chamber being in fluid communication with the working space of the retarder.

  • Patent number: 5193654
Abstract: The invention concerns a hydrodynamic retarder, the stator blade wheel of which can be brought into eccentric, nonaligned positions with respect to the rotor blade wheel. Either by formation of a blade free circumferential region in the blading of the stator blade wheel together with a longitudinal guide for eccentric shifting or by eccentric swingable mounting of the stator blade wheel, a directly proportional force is obtained from the corresponding braking torque in the stator blade wheel. This force represents a measure for the braking torque and serves as a characteristic value for a torque adjustment. This creates a simple control device with characteristic curves which requires a smaller retarder profile diameter in order to obtain given operating points. The advantage is the reduction of the outside dimensions, the weight and the expense for regulating the brake torque.
