    Abstract: Homogeneous amorphous aluminum phosphate composition with a surface of 100 to 300 m.sup.2 /g and a pore volume in pores with diameters of less than 1000 nm of at least 1.0 cm.sup.3 /g, in which phosphorus and aluminum are present in a molar ratio in the range from 0.9:1 to 1:1 and which is characterized in that it is present in the form of microspherical particles with a particle size of 10 to 20 .mu.m and displays a bimodal pore-size distribution in the pore-diameter range of less than 1000 nm. Also described is a process for the production of the novel aluminum phosphate composition, which is suitable in particular as a cracking catalyst, as a catalyst support, especially for polymerization catalysts, as a flatting agent, as an adsorption agent and as a thickening agent.

    Abstract: Flexographic photosensitive printing plates are made with formulations comprising triblock polymers of poly(vinylpyridine)-poly(butadiene) or poly(isoprene)-poly(vinylpyridine). A variation in the formulations includes the insertion of a copolymerizable monomer such as styrene between the poly(butadiene) and poly(vinylpyridine) blocks. The polymers may be quaternized or neutralized with an organic acid. When made with quaternized polymers, the plates after imaging with UV may be developed in aqueous solutions. The acid neutralized polymers offer further advantages as to ease of synthesis, safety and improved resolution.

    Abstract: A curing agent for epoxy resins is prepared from an amine and an epoxy, as well as subsequent modification by a polyisocyanate compound, in such a manner that the curing agent is in the form of small spherical particles. The particles can be as small as 0.1 microns. This curing agent can be easily dispersed in curing agent masterbatches and curable compositions with minimal effect on their storage stability. The resulting curable compositions have a wide range of applications, including automobile and electronic adhesives.

    Abstract: There is provided an improved core element for use in converters, especially catalytic converters. The core is characterized by two portions one of which portions is capable of being electrically heated, and the other of which is isolated from the first portion electrically and thermally and is called a light-off portion. A plurality of core elements is wrapped about a central rigid metallic pin and the assembly tightly spirally wound about the pin to form the core, part of which is electrically heatable and the other of which is not heated electrically. The core is formed from a plurality of composite core elements, each including a corrugated strip backed up with a flat two-member strip, one band of the two-member flat strip being of generally relatively narrow width, contiguous with the leading portion of the corrugated strip, and the other band contiguous with the trailing portion of the corrugated strip and usually being of relatively greater width.

    Abstract: A multiple layer film useful in moisture barrier packaging applications has at least one layer comprising a blend of propylene polymer or copolymer, and a hydrocarbon resin; and two additional layers comprising a propylene polymer or copolymer, ethylene alpha olefin copolymer, ionomer, polybutene, or blends thereof. A core layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer or other oxygen barrier material, or high density polyethylene, can be included in some embodiments. A preferred embodiment of the multi-layer film exhibits excellent moisture barrier and optical properties, and shrink properties as well if the film has been oriented. High oxygen barrier is also a feature in embodiments including EVOH or other oxygen barrier materials.

The salt referred to is preferably an alkali metal salt, for instance, a sulphate or halogenide, such as sodium sulphate or sodium chloride. A composition is provided that is useful for carrying the sterilization process into effect, wherein a hydrogen peroxide solution is modified by the addition of a penetration-reducing amount of a penetration-reducing salt.

    Abstract: A multilayer film having a first layer including a blend of a crystalline nylon and a material which disrupts the crystallinity of the crystalline nylon; a second layer also including this blend; and a third intervening layer, between the first and second layers, including a material having a modulus lower than the modulus of the crystalline nylon, and having a crystallinity of less than 60%. The nylon blend layers, which can be two or more in the film, add toughness and stiffness, but also elastic recovery to the final film. The intervening layer or layers of a material with relatively low modulus and crystallinity aid in orientation of the film during manufacture, permitting the use of more of the crystalline nylon than would be practical if only a single nylon layer was used.

    Abstract: There has been provided a process for spot welding a stack of thin metal strips or layers with a non-depositing welder gun. The process involves forming a stack of thin metal layers, compressing the layers between the jaws of a press, one of which has at least one receptacle for and adapted to receive the non-depositing welder gun tip, placing the gun in the receptacle, optionally flooding with an inert gas, and applying electrical power to the gun for a period of from 1 to 10 seconds. The total amount of the first polyetherester copolymer present in the laminate is greater than or equal to 35 wt. % of the total weight of the laminate film to provide strength to the laminate film. The laminate film may be bonded to one or more layers of polyesters, polyolefins, polyamides, and non-woven fabrics.

    Abstract: Flotation drying apparatus for the staged (indirect) heating of solvent laden air recirculating within a drying enclosure, and a method of optimally controlling and directing solvent laden recirculation air such that condensation and sapping of solvent and various solvent-based by-products may be effectively reduced or eliminated. In addition to the reduction of condensate, a greater and more uniform mixing of the atmosphere within the drying enclosure is achieved, thereby enhancing safety and the drying process as pockets of high concentration solvent vapors are reduced. Air from outside the dryer enclosure is heated within the dryer enclosure, and is mixed with solvent-laden air. The mixed air is recirculated to the first drying zone of the dryer.
