  • Patent number: 4468456
Abstract: A medium for the selective growth and identification of Streptococcus mutans bacteria is disclosed, that includes a tryptone-glucose extract agar, monobasic and dibasic potassium phosphate, yeast extract, agar, a color indicator for the bacteria and a solution of sucrose ranging in concentration from 1% to 15%. Preferably, the concentration of the sucrose may range from about 3% to about 11%. A bacteria culture plate may be prepared comprising the medium, and may include a first basal layer comprised entirely of the medium, and a second overlayer agar coating, including a mixture of the medium with a calcium phosphate suspension. Both the basal layer and the overlayer agar coating are preferably adjusted to a mildly basic pH.The present medium, and bacteria culture plates prepared therewith, offer desired bacterial specificity with no growth inhibition, that is usually the case with specific media of this kind.

  • Patent number: 4467032
Abstract: A process and apparatus is disclosed for rapid and accurate identifying and enumerating of microorganisms. A sample believed to contain a certain microorganism is combined with an inhibiting reagent having a known specificity for the microorganism. The combined sample and inhibiting reagent is placed in an alternating current electrical field having a frequency sufficiently high to cause alignment of microbial cells in the sample. A polarized beam of laser light is then passed through the sample and the extent of birefringence is measured. The measured birefringence is compared with that of a control sample known to contain the microorganism under investigation to determine the microorganism in the sample.

  • Patent number: 4464608
Abstract: A circuit for operating and controlling optical apparatus for viewing an object and making a photographic record thereof and having an illuminating light source and a photoflash light source, the circuit including a pulse width modulator for operating the illuminating light source, a flyback converter circuit and capacitor charging and discharging circuit for operating the photoflash light source, a clock pulse source connected to the pulse width modulator and the flyback converter for operating the same, and a delay circuit for allowing the optics to settle before operation of the photoflash. An energy level control circuit monitors the capacitor voltage and stops application of clock pulses to the flyback converter when the capacitor voltage reaches a desired value. A first visual indicator signals when the desired capacitor voltage is reached, a second visual indicator signals a certain condition in the apparatus, and a circuit gives priority to operation of the second indicator.
