Publication number: 20140125176Abstract: A method and apparatus for radial and axial hybrid bearings using gas sector(s) and magnetic sector(s) to increase bearing load capacity and stiffness, reduce bearing size and bearing span, and reduce cost comprises a stator and a rotor. An illustrative embodiment of a stator for use with a hybrid bearing may include one or more bearing pads positioned in a gas sector, and the stator may also include one or more magnetic sectors. The hybrid bearings may provide for the elimination of much of the magnetic bearing structure and associated power electronics using a pressurized gas/air bearing to react the bearing steady load while reserving the magnetic bearing and its controls to react dynamic loads and stabilize the bearing. In addition, the magnetic bearing controls for a hybrid bearing may be used to monitor bearing operating condition and provide communications of these conditions to the outside world.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 8, 2013Publication date: May 8, 2014Applicant: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventor: Michael K. Patent number: 8419284Abstract: A bearing system for reducing end clearance and axial vibrations includes a bearing housing and a bearing. The bearing is a thrust bearing and may be of any type, such as a flat thrust face, a taper land thrust bearing or a tilt pad thrust bearing. The bearing housing includes a cavity to hold the bearing. A fluid cavity is formed between the bearing and the bearing housing. At least one fluid passageway extends through the bearing housing to feed fluid to the fluid cavity. As fluid is introduced to the fluid cavity the pressure in the cavity moves the bearing outward, away from the bearing housing and towards the rotating thrust collar, reducing the clearance, or space, between the face of the bearing and the thrust collar, reducing or eliminating the vibrations.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2009Date of Patent: April 16, 2013Assignee: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventors: Barry J. Patent number: 8408802Abstract: The bi-directional rotation offset pivot thrust bearing includes a carrier and an array of longitudinal protrusions thereon that run through the center axis of the carrier. An array of pads are in slidable engagement with the longitudinal protrusions to permit the thrusts pads to move between first and second rotational positions. The thrust pads are automatically offset pivoted in a first direction when in a the first rotational position and automatically offset pivoted in a second direction when in the second rotational position. The thrust pads are offset pivoted in an approximate 60 percent to 40 percent ratio with the leading side of the thrust pad being 60 percent in both the first rotational position and the second rotational position. A retainer is also provided to maintain the thrust pads in slidable communication with the protrusions.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2010Date of Patent: April 2, 2013Assignee: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventor: Fouad Y. Publication number: 20120181734Abstract: A module flexible ligament damper includes an cylindrical inner structure with a central axis and an outer cylindrical surface. An outer casing with an inner cylindrical surface is positioned around the inner structure. A modular ligament with an inner flange and an outer flange connected by a web is positioned between the inner structure and the casing. The inner flange is connected to the inner structure and the outer flange is connected to the casing to support the inner structure within the casing, and to permit free orbital movement of the inner structure on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the inner structure. In one embodiment, the web is straight but does not intersect the axis of the inner structure for flexing in a radial direction. In other embodiments, the web is curved for radial flexing.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 13, 2011Publication date: July 19, 2012Applicant: WAUKESHA BEARINGS CORPORATIONInventor: Fouad Y. Zeidan

Patent number: 4738550Abstract: A tilting pad thrust bearing in which the sector-shaped pads are supported on individual disks. A runner runs on top of the pads. The disks have a spherical element projecting from their bottoms. The elements make tangential contact with a stationary support ring and the pads and disks tilt about an axis on which the point of tangency lies. The tilt axis of each pad is located at 70% to 80% of the length of an arc extending from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the pad midway between the radially outermost and innermost edge of the pad.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 1987Date of Patent: April 19, 1988Assignee: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventor: Willis W. Patent number: 4403873Abstract: A tilting pad thrust bearing wherein each bearing pad in a circular array of pads is held in a retainer and is provided with a radially extending rib on the side opposite of the side that receives the thrust load. There are disks that have a planar surface on one side and a spherical surface on an axially opposite side. The respective ribs of the pads bear on the planar surfaces of the disks. The spherical surfaces of the disks bear on angulated wings of two adjacent leveling links in a circular array of links. The links have radial holes and are supported for pivoting on pins that extend radially from the retainer. The periphery of each pin makes tangential line contact with a hole. An extrapolation of the angulated wing surfaces extends through the line contact so there is no moment arm for frictional forces at the point contact on the wings to act through and free pivoting of the leveling links is not impaired.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1982Date of Patent: September 13, 1983Assignee: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventor: Willis W. Patent number: 4097094Abstract: A plurality of arcuate, vibration cushioning, spring beams are positioned in endwise relationship in the interior of an annular bearing housing to resiliently support an annular journal bearing therewithin which, in turn, rotatably supports a shaft. An annular clearance is provided between the bearing housing and the bearing elements, and oil is introduced to the clearance to provide viscous damping of vibrations.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1976Date of Patent: June 27, 1978Assignee: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventor: Willis W. Patent number: 4077682Abstract: The bearing pads of a large tilting pad thrust bearing are extended laterally to project from both radial edges, the lateral extensions having faces which are offset inwardly relative to the faces of the pad and said extensions projecting into the spaces between the pads. Each lateral extension has a radially extending main oil duct, there being a row of oil jet ducts communicating with each main duct and opening at the surface of the lateral extension in a position to direct a row of oil jets against the runner in the space between pads, oil being pumped into the main oil duct from a circular oil manifold surrounding the pads and coupled to the main oil ducts through flexible conduits which permit the pads to tilt freely without interference.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1976Date of Patent: March 7, 1978Assignee: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventor: Willis W. Patent number: 3934952Abstract: An annular liquid collecting chamber is provided between the aft end of a stern tube bearing for a ship's propeller shaft and the forward end of the aft stern tube seal. A floating seal ring at the aft end of the stern tube bearing retains oil in the bearing but there is leakage of a small percentage of oil into the collecting chamber. A scavenge pump is coupled to the bottom of the collecting chamber to remove any fluids that collect therein. The oil in the output of the scavenge pump is coalesced and pumped to the stern tube oil sump tank to be recycled. The aft stern tube seal includes at least three seal rings whose lips are all directed outboard. Filtered sea water is pumped into a first annular space between two of the seal rings and circulates in an outboard direction to cool and lubricate the rings and wash away any dirt.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1975Date of Patent: January 27, 1976Assignee: Waukesha Bearings CorporationInventor: Willis W.
