Patent number: 5277549Abstract: A high performance steam turbine blade is provided in which the geometry of the blade airfoil is configured to minimize energy loss through the row of blades and control the radial distribution of the degree of reaction. The velocity of the steam over the blade surface is minimized to reduce friction losses, rapid deceleration of the steam velocity as it expands toward the trailing edge is avoided to prevent boundary layer separation and the reaction distribution is adjusted so that a relatively high reaction occurs at the base of the airfoil, thereby reducing secondary flow, and a relatively low reaction occurs at tip of the airfoil, thereby minimizing tip leakage. Specifically, the radial reaction distribution is such that in the hub region at least 20% of the stage pressure drop occurs in the blade row and in the tip region less than 50% of the stage pressure drop occurs in the blade row.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1992Date of Patent: January 11, 1994Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Shun Chen, Jurek Ferleger

Patent number: 5278743Abstract: An alkaline-permanganate process for chemically decontaminating oxidized metal surfaces wetted by primary water circulating in cooling loops of nuclear reactors maintains permanganate-containing primary water at a temperature of about 90.degree. C. and at a pH of 9-12 to oxidize the wetted surfaces. Oxalic acid is then added to the water and the oxalic acid-containing primary water is maintained at a temperature of at least about 90.degree. Patent number: 5278880Abstract: A pressurizer tank in a pressurized water nuclear reactor is mounted between structural walls of the reactor on a substructure of the reactor, the tank extending upwardly from the substructure. For bearing lateral loads such as seismic shocks, a girder substantially encircles the pressurizer tank at a space above the substructure and is coupled to the structural walls via opposed sway struts. Each sway strut is attached at one end to the girder and at an opposite end to one of the structural walls, and the sway struts are oriented substantially horizontally in pairs aligned substantially along tangents to the wall of the circular tank. Preferably, eight sway struts attach to the girder at 90.degree. intervals. A compartment encloses the pressurizer tank and forms the structural wall. The sway struts attach to corners of the compartment for maximum stiffness and load bearing capacity.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1992Date of Patent: January 11, 1994Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Tod H. Patent number: 5278380Abstract: A superconducting magnet coil is protected from local damage due to quenching by inductively driven heaters formed by heater strips embedded in the coil and connected in closed loops. A cold bypass diode shunting the coil winding commutates current out of the magnet when the voltage drop across the region of the coil which has gone normal exceeds the forward bias of the diode. This change in coil current induces sufficient current in the heater loops to cause the entire coil to go normal for uniform dissipation of stored energy throughout the magnet.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1990Date of Patent: January 11, 1994Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Jerald F. Patent number: 5275739Abstract: A method for stabilizing in-situ soluble heavy metal contaminants in carbonate-containing land or submarine formations which comprises introducing into the carbonate-containing formation an aqueous solution of calcium chloride, wherein the solution contains a stabilizing amount of calcium ions. The contaminants and the carbonate form coprecipitates with the calcium ions which are insoluble in formation fluids, therefore substantially inhibiting the remobilization of the heavy metals with groundwater. The method is effective with heavy metals which exist in both anionic and cationic form in carbonate-containing land or submarine formations. The method may be used to treat land formations hundreds of feet below the surface, landfill deposits, or submarine formations to reduce soluble heavy metal contaminants to a few parts per million.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1992Date of Patent: January 4, 1994Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: David C. Patent number: 5274206Abstract: A spring charging mechanism for electrical circuit breakers and transfer switches of the type in which a spring is charged by rotation of a shaft. The charging mechanism has a charging shaft with two independently operating ratchet mechanisms coupled thereto. One ratchet mechanism may be driven by hand while the other may be separately motor-driven or held stationary by a bracket. The ratchet mechanism which is not in operation acts as a locking device which prevents rotation of the charging shaft in the discharge direction while allowing rotation in the charging direction. The charging mechanism is adaptable for either hand or motor-driven operation or both. It also features an inexpensive and easily-installed flexible, resilient, insulating sleeve which insulates the charging mechanism from the operator, and a key arrangement for coupling a handle to a ratchet mechanism which distributes stress within the handle and protects the handle fastening screws from destructive shear stresses.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1992Date of Patent: December 28, 1993Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Stanislaw A. Patent number: 5272216Abstract: Both a system and method are provided for remotely heating a polymeric material to a selected temperature. The system generally comprises particulate ferromagnetic material dispersed throughout the polymeric material to form a composite, wherein the particulate material has a Curie temperature that corresponds to the selected heating temperature, and a source of microwave energy for remotely applying a beam of microwave energy to the polymeric composite material. Preferably, the particulate ferromagnetic material comprises only about 2 percent of the total composite by weight. The polymeric material may be compliant, thermosettable plastic, and the Curie temperature of the particulate ferromagnetic material dispersed therein may advantageously be above the curing temperature of the polymer, such that the beam from the source of microwave energy may be used to remotely join surfaces or construct joints in composite structures.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1990Date of Patent: December 21, 1993Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: William G. Patent number: 5270671Abstract: A negative slope phase skewer for use between radiating elements of series fed antenna array. The phase skewer has a four part coupler having two segments lying parallel to one another, each segment being a near and a far branch. The two near branches connect to the transmission line, while the far branches are at some distance from the transmission line. Patent number: 5270598Abstract: A solid series connector for electrically connecting a first half-coil to a second half-coil in a stator phase winding includes first and second solid conductor members which are fixedly electrically connected at both ends to groups of conductive strands in the respective half-coils. The connector is much less labor-intensive to install than the group transposition connections used in the past, is more rugged and durable under high temperatures and stresses, and is relatively compact. Patent number: 5271051Abstract: The spent fuel pit of a pressured water reactor (PWR) nuclear power plant has sufficient coolant capacity that a safety rated cooling system is not required. A non-safety rated combined cooling and purification system with redundant branches selectively provides simultaneously cooling and purification for the spent fuel pit, the refueling cavity, and the refueling water storage tank, and transfers coolant from the refueling water storage tank to the refueling cavity without it passing through the reactor core. Skimmers on the suction piping of the combined cooling and purification system eliminate the need for separate skimmer circuits with dedicated pumps.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1992Date of Patent: December 14, 1993Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Michael M.
