    Abstract: A system is directed for remotely securing a canopy seal about a broken omega seal site between the control drive mechanism and the adapter tube of a nuclear reactor vessel so as to contain any radioactive leakage therebetween. The system includes a stalk measuring device for initially measuring the diameter of the adapter tube, a split canopy installation fixture which is adjusted according to the measurement detected by the stalk measuring device to position a two-piece canopy seal about the omega seal site, and a robotic weld arm for performing the upper and lower radial welds about the canopy seal as well as C-shaped vertical welds between the two-piece canopy seal.

    Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for providing a radiating element having an electrical reflective phase shifter for reflecting electromagnetic energy received from an electromagnetic energy source including a dielectric substrate having a top surface, a conductive layer having a channel-like opening in its top surface and disposed on the top surface of the dielectric substrate, at least one electrostatic switch spans the channel-like opening and a means for selectively actuating the electrostatic switch to reflect the electrostatic energy. The electrostatically actuated mechanical switch utilizes a cantilever element fabricated by solid-state microfabrication techniques. The electrical reflective phase shifter can be grouped into a phase shifting reflect array for beam steering an electromagnetic energy from an electromagnetic energy source.

    Abstract: The automatic tube processing system and method utilizes an automatic laser inspection system capable of inspecting the face of a tube for defects during the manufacturing process of the tube. The automatic tube processing system and method comprises a light source, such as a laser, positioned near a tube for transmitting light onto the face of the tube. The tube and the light source may be rotated relative to one another to enable the entire face of the tube to be inspected. An electrical receiver for detecting light reflected from the face of the tube is positioned near the light source. The electrical receiver is capable of determining a height differential on the face of the tube and capable of producing an output to be analyzed by a processing means. A monitor displays the output from the processing means in the form of a graph.

    Abstract: A nuclear reactor is provided having a generally cylindrical reactor vessel disposed within an opening in a primary shield. The opening in the primary shield is defined by a plurality of generally planar side walls forming a generally polyhedral-shaped opening. The reactor vessel is supported within the opening in the primary shield by reactor vessel supports which are in communication and aligned with central portions of some of the side walls. The reactor vessel is connected to the central portions of the reactor vessel supports. A thermal insulation polyhedron formed from a plurality of slidably insertable and removable generally planar insulation panels substantially surrounds at least a portion of the reactor vessel and is disposed between the reactor vessel and the side walls of the primary shield. The shape of the insulation polyhedron generally corresponds to the shape of the opening in the primary shield.

    Abstract: Particulate material is treated by first washing the contaminated material with a contaminant mobilizing solution comprising a leaching agent, a surfactant or a mixture thereof. Large particles, typically greater than 5 mm are mechanically separated, washed with water and returned to the site as recovered soil. Fines, along with contaminants dissolved or dispersed in the contaminant mobilizing solution are separated from intermediate sized particles by a countercurrent flow of the contaminant mobilizing solution, preferably in a mineral jig. The intermediate sized particles are then abraded in an attrition scrubber to dislodge attached mineral slimes or fines. These additional fines are separated from the intermediate sized particles with a countercurrent flow of wash water in a second mineral jig. The preferred oxidizing agent is chlorine, and hydrogen is the preferred reducing agent.

    Abstract: A pressurized water nuclear reactor uses its residual heat removal system to make up water in the reactor coolant circuit from an in-containment refueling water supply during staged depressurization leading up to passive emergency cooling by gravity feed from the refueling water storage tank, and flooding of the containment building. When depressurization commences due to inadvertence or a manageable leak, the residual heat removal system is activated manually and prevents flooding of the containment when such action is not necessary. Operation of the passive cooling system is not impaired. A high pressure makeup water storage tank is coupled to the reactor coolant circuit, holding makeup coolant at the operational pressure of the reactor. The staged depressurization system vents the coolant circuit to the containment, thus reducing the supply of makeup coolant. The level of makeup coolant can be sensed to trigger opening of successive depressurization conduits.

    Abstract: An improved robotic arm which is capable of accurately manipulating a testing device beneath the tube sheet of the steam generator and accurately and consistently return to a selected tube location is provided. The robotic arm includes a base which is adapted to be fixedly secured to a support beam which initially positions the robotic arm within the steam generator, a first extension arm which is rotatably mounted on the base forming a primary rotation joint and which extends essentially parallel to the tube sheet. A second extension arm is rotatably mounted at the end of the first extension arm forming a secondary rotation joint and further extends therefrom. The testing device such as an eddy current inspection tool is positioned at a distal end of the second extension arm.

Also, the heat exchanger is supported by a frame so that the tank wall is not required to support all of its weight.

The system includes two hydro-pneumatic chambers utilized such that one is filled by liquid from the pump while the other supplies the load, and as one hydro-pneumatic chamber empties, valves reconfigure the system such that the hydro-pneumatic chamber reverse roles. Each hydro-pneumatic chamber includes a liquid side and a gas side separated by a movable barrier with the gas sides of the hydro-pneumatic chambers being connected to one another thereby providing a large acoustic transmission drop across a liquid-gas boundary and subsequent gas-liquid boundary to interrupt the liquid noise path from the pump to the load.

    Abstract: An electronic identification tag interrogation method is provided in which a portal transmits an interrogation signal which is received by an electronic identification tag within its field of range. The interrogation signal includes an address which requests a response from every tag having an address greater than or equal to the address of the signal. If more than one reply is received by the portal, the interrogation address is bisected and the interrogation signal is retransmitted. The interrogation address is successively bisected until a single response is isolated. When a single response is isolated, communication is directed between the portal and the identification tag and the interrogation system is reset to isolate and identify any remaining tags.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for suppressing the formation of vortices in circulating coolant fluid of a nuclear reactor. A vortex-suppressing plate having a plurality of openings therein is suspended within the lower plenum of a reactor vessel below and generally parallel to the main core support of the reactor. The plate is positioned so as to intersect vortices which may form in the circulating reactor coolant fluid. The intersection of the plate with such vortices disrupts the rotational flow pattern of the vortices, thereby disrupting the formation thereof.

    Abstract: A plate for spreading bolt loading around the horizontal joint flanges of a turbomachine, such as a steam turbine, is provided. The plate is contoured so that its surface area substantially matches that of the surface of the steam turbine flange against which the compressive load associated with the joint bolt preloading is applied. The plate is disposed between the flange and the nuts on the joint bolts and is made from a high yield strength material so that the locally high stresses under the nuts do not cause creeping or yielding of the plate. The plate serves to distribute the compressive joint loading around the entire surface of the flange, thereby eliminating the locally high compressive stresses that can cause creep and yielding in the flange. Spherical counter bores are machined in the plate bolt holes and spherical washers are installed between the plate and the nuts so that misalignment of bolt holes does not cause the nuts to impose bending forces on the bolts.

    Abstract: An apparatus for providing an inventory of an isotopically enriched acidic solution of an element that is capable of forming a water soluble weakly acidic solution at temperatures amenable to ion exchange and having a lower molecular weight isotope fraction and a higher molecular weight isotope fraction is disclosed. This apparatus includes at least two ion exchangers, each being temperature dependent with respect to their storage capacity of said lower and higher molecular weight isotopes, a hot tank containing a hot tank solution and a cold tank containing a cold tank solution both flow coupled to the ion exchangers. A first series of valves is selectively operable to direct the hot tank solution to one of the ion exchanger and to direct the cold tank solution to the other ion exchangers. A second series of valves is selectively operable to direct the flow from the ion exchangers to either the hot tank or the cold tank. An analyzer for sampling the solution is located upstream from the hot tank.

    Abstract: A nuclear fuel assembly for a pressurized water nuclear reactor has a spring and dimple structure formed in a non-radioactive insert tube placed in the top of a sensor receiving instrumentation tube thimble disposed in the fuel assembly and attached at a top nozzle, a bottom nozzle, and intermediate grids. The instrumentation tube thimble is open at the top, where the sensor or its connection extends through the cooling water for coupling to a sensor signal processor. The spring and dimple insert tube is mounted within the instrumentation tube thimble and extends downwardly adjacent the top. The springs and dimples restrain the sensor and its connections against lateral displacement causing impact with the instrumentation tube thimble due to the strong axial flow of cooling water. The instrumentation tube has a stainless steel outer sleeve and a zirconium alloy inner sleeve below the insert tube adjacent the top. The insert tube is relatively non-radioactivated inconel alloy.
