Abstract: A system for identifying forest stands within an area of interest that are exhibiting abnormal growth determines a relationship between vegetation index (VI) values determined from a first and a second image of the area of interest. From the relationship, an expected or predicted VI value for each forest stand is determined and compared with the actual VI value computed for the forest stand from the first image. Those forest stands with a difference between the actual and predicted VI values that exceed a threshold are identified as exhibiting abnormal growth.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to methods for reducing warp potential of lumber derived from a raw material, such as a log or stem are provided. In some embodiments, the methods involve examining the log or stem for shrinkage properties and/or properties of spiral grain. The location of the shrinkage properties and/or properties of spiral grain may be used to determine how the log is oriented relative to a cutting device. In some embodiments, these characteristics may determine what cutting pattern is selected for creating the lumber or how a stem is bucked.
Abstract: Methods are described for predicting the percentage of latewood and specific gravity of lumber independent of moisture content using image analysis of the lumber surfaces.
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a combination forest biomass and tree harvester, a harvesting head assembly, and methods for harvesting trees and forest biomass. In some embodiments, the combination forest biomass and tree harvester includes a self-propelled vehicle base, a moveable arm, and a harvesting head assembly. The harvesting head assembly may include a frame member, a grabbing assembly, and a cutting assembly. The cutting assembly may include a primary cutting mechanism and a secondary cutting mechanism. As the combination forest biomass and tree harvester moves through a forest area, the cutting assembly may be used to cut trees and mow biomass.
Abstract: A method of managing timberland generally includes planting within a plot a first genetic tree crop of a first tree species that is selected for at least a first tree trait in a substantially linear pattern defining a first plurality of adjacent substantially linear beds at a first crop spacing and at a first row spacing between adjacent substantially linear beds. The method further includes interplanting a second genetic tree crop of the first tree species that is selected for at least a second tree trait in the first plurality of adjacent substantially linear beds at a second crop spacing that is shorter than the first crop spacing, such that adjacent substantially linear beds include trees of the first and second genetic tree crops.
Abstract: A method for selecting conifer trees is disclosed. This method relates to the early measurement of tree characteristics for selecting trees most likely to exhibit certain traits as they mature. This method can be used for implementing silvicultural treatments, thinning or further breeding.

Abstract: A false color composite image is created by assigning mid infrared data from three time-spaced images of an area of interest to corresponding RGB color components for the false color composite image. The RGB color components for the false color composite image are then converted into color space data and classified into a number of color classes. An age is assigned to the color classes to create a classified image of age classes of the area of interest.
Abstract: A framing bracket is provided. The framing bracket includes a frame having a leg extending from a support arm. The framing bracket also includes a locking bracket attached to one end of the frame and an anchoring bracket attached to a second end of the frame. The locking bracket is affixed to the frame at a non-normal angle relative to a longitudinal axis extending through the leg such that the locking bracket is locked to a framing member of a building and the anchoring bracket supports the second end of the leg against the framing member when the framing bracket is removably attached to the framing member and the framing bracket is in a locked position.
