Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system and method for diagnosing a failure condition of an image processing apparatus. When a failure condition is detected in an image path during output of a document, a fault code is issued. The image processing apparatus is then capable of performing an internal diagnosis to generate a diagnostic report, and send the diagnostic report and fault code to an operator at a remote location. The system and method allows one to diagnose a problem or failure condition more quickly and efficiently, thereby cutting down on service time and costs.

Abstract: A method of color selection is described including a component to parse a natural language color specification into a set of colloquial color names and a set of flags to indicate whether a color name is to be included or excluded from the color selection. Components are also included to find the best matches of colloquial color names in a library of colloquial color names and map the best matches to one or more standard colors in a library of standard colors. A transform building component uses the standard colors names and the flags to create a mathematical selection transform, typically in the form of a multi-dimensional lookup table. If necessary, another component converts arbitrary sets of test color coordinates into color encoding identical to that used for the standard colors to produce a color selection.

Abstract: A package assembly method and system may include a processor, a more printing device, an assembly device, a knowledge base containing a structural design ontology, and a memory structure. A memory structure may contain instructions that instruct the processor to query the knowledge base to obtain a two dimensional package model based on a known three dimensional package model and a set of intents, convert a three dimensional graphic representation to a two dimensional graphic representation using a semantic structure, access a packaging rule set to obtain rules for assembly of a three dimensional package from the model, instruct a printing device to apply the two dimensional graphic representation to the two dimensional package model, and instruct the assembly device to apply the rules for assembly to create the three dimensional package.

Abstract: Fusers, printing apparatuses and methods of fusing toner on media are disclosed. An embodiment of a fuser for fusing toner on a medium includes at least two modules arranged along a process direction of the medium, each module having an ON state in which the module discharges a hot gas and an OFF state in which the module does not discharge the hot gas; and a controller connected to the modules for controlling the ON/OFF state of each module to control the discharge of the hot gas from each module onto the medium as the medium is transported past the modules in the process direction.

Abstract: Provided is a VCSEL that includes a lower DBR of a first conductivity type, an active region, and an upper DBR of a second conductivity type, on a substrate. The lower DBR has a first to-be-oxidized Al-containing layer located farther from the active region than a second to-be-oxidized layer that is formed in the upper DBR. Both layers have an oxidized region and a first or a second non-oxidized region surrounded by the oxidized region. The first non-oxidized region is larger than the maximum size of the second non-oxidized region for a single mode oscillation, and smaller than the maximum size of the first non-oxidized region for a single mode oscillation. The second non-oxidized region is larger than the maximum size of the second non-oxidized region for a single mode oscillation. The first non-oxidized region has a size equal to or larger than that of the second non-oxidized region.
Abstract: There is disclosed a system and method of processing a document converted, by a print driver, from a first format to a second format. The system includes a workstation with a browser communicating with both a user interface (having a display) and a network. The browser is used to access a services interface, the services interface including at least one selectable service available by way of the network. The browser, responsive to the print driver converting the document in the first format into the document in the second format, is opened to display the at least one selectable service of the services interface on the user interface display. Responsive to selecting the at least one selectable service from the displayed services interface, the at least one selectable service is applied to the document corresponding in the second format.
Abstract: An apparatus for transporting processed sheets within a printing device. The apparatus includes a compiler including a slot for receiving the processed sheets. The slot is defined at least in part by a paper guide. An elevator is in operative communication with the compiler. The elevator includes a stop for supporting the processed sheets and a drive mechanism for moving the stop and processed sheets supported thereby between a plurality of positions. The stop has a first position for initially receiving the processed sheets. The stop is movable from the first position in a generally upward direction to a second position for breaking adhesion between a processed sheet and the paper guide. The stop is movable in a generally downward direction from the second position to a third position.
Abstract: A blade engagement apparatus for metering release agent onto an image forming device associated moving surface, such as a Solid Ink Jet drum. The blade engagement apparatus includes a blade positioning mechanism having a blade holder rotated about a fixed pivot point disposed a distance LD from the moving surface. A plurality of metering blades extending from the blade holder each include a blade tip disposed a distance LB from the pivot point such that LB is greater than LD. A replacement blade is brought into a working position in deflected engagement with the moving surface for metering a release agent onto the surface while the used blade is moved into a non-operational suspended position. Various blade replacement strategies are used to initiate a blade replacement operation.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for supporting printer-based features in an IPDS printing environment. The system and method enable the printer to assign logical page identifiers to IPDS pages and track them internally. The printer only reports status to the host computer for pages flagged as host generated pages. Printer generated pages are not included in IPDS page counts. This enables one to invoke advanced printer-based features at the printer without corrupting the counts used by the host computer for error recovery and print job management in the IPDS printing environment.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention introduce a novel recursive assembly process to automatically create a library of components. It starts with simple components used as building blocks and proceeds by repeatedly combining these randomly into more complex ones. The utility and quality of these random combinations of components are measured against a set of functional goals. Useful combinations then become new components in the library that can be used as building blocks for further random combination. This description is not intended to be a complete description of, or limit the scope of, the invention. Other features, aspects, and objects of the invention can be obtained from a review of the specification, the figures, and the claims.
Abstract: Documents are clustered or categorized to generate a model associating documents with classes. Outlier measures are computed for the documents indicative of how well each document fits into the model. Outlier documents are identified to a user based on the outlier measures and a user selected outlier criterion. Ambiguity measures are computed for the documents indicative of a number of classes with which each document has similarity under the model. If a document is annotated with a label class, a possible corrective label class is identified if the annotated document has higher similarity with the possible corrective label class under the model than with the annotated label class. The clustering or categorizing is repeated adjusted based on received user input to generate an updated model associating documents with classes. Outlier and ambiguity measures are also calculated at runtime for new documents classified using the model.
Abstract: A method for recommending a collection of digital images from a set of images includes specifying at least one image selection criterion. For each of a plurality of images in the set of images, an image quality value for the image is determined. Images are recommended for the collection by taking into consideration the image quality value for the images and the degree to which the collection satisfies the at least one image selection criterion.
