Abstract: A pay-for-use office machine, such as a digital copier, monitors and logs chargeable machine activities on a dynamically changeable session basis and generates a session activity report based on the logged activities during the session. The report enables capture of revenue value from an office machine by a pay-for-use service provider by summarizing activities so that costs associated with the activities can be assessed to the customer at a point-of-sale (POS) terminal. The report may be generated in hardcopy form by the office machine or may be transferred to the POS terminal electronically. The session activity report may include variable costing information for each chargeable activity.
Abstract: A method of controlling an actuator includes determining a function of an actuator value based on a cost function index that represents a relationship between a tone reproduction curve error and the actuator value necessary to achieve a tone reproduction curve target, determining an actual tone reproduction curve error from an obtained sample of a tone reproduction curve and controlling the actuator based on the function and actual tone reproduction curve error to move to a point that represents the tone reproduction curve target. A Xerographic system includes an actuator, an input device that inputs the cost function index and a controller that controls the Xerographic system to obtain the sample, determine an actual tone reproduction curve error from the sample, and control the actuator based on the cost function index and the actual tone reproduction curve error to move to a point that represents the tone reproduction curve target.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus that performs a plurality of functions includes: a display which displays a menu screen or a function instruction screen, the menu screen being used for selecting one of the plurality of functions, and the function instruction screen corresponding to each of the functions and being used for executing the corresponding function; an operating section which accepts an operation relating the selected function from a user; a detecting section which detects that an operation relating to the selected function has not been performed for a predetermined amount of time; and a controller which controls a screen transition to change the screen of the display to an initial screen of the function instruction screen corresponding to the selected function, when the detecting section detects that the operation has not been performed for the predetermined amount of time.
Abstract: In a wireless network, two or more devices can determine how close they are from one another in a peer-to-peer way, by exchanging the network characteristics they observe in real time. A method for determining device proximity in a wireless network, includes characterizing at a first device any detected wireless network radio signals; receiving any broadcast network characteristics from at least one other device on the network; comparing the first device network characteristics with the received network characteristics from the at least one other device on the network; if the network characteristics are within a predetermined relationship, the first device and the at least one other device are in proximity with one another. Network characteristics may include signal strength, noise level and MAC address of the transmitting device. The method eliminates the need to calibrate WiFi signal strength as a function of location in a particular area.
Abstract: In a finishing apparatus, such as would be used with a copier or high-speed printer, an applicator places stickers on a folded sheet or booklet, to prevent the sheet or booklet from unfolding or opening. At one point in the operation, the folded sheet or booklet is “backed up” in its basic process direction to receive a sticker on its trailing edge, and backed up further so that the sticker is folded over the trailing edge by a pair of crease rolls.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of preparing encapsulated bichromal balls. The method involves forming capsules of electrophoretic particles encapsulated within a dielectric fluid such as a hydrocarbon solvent or siloxane oil that includes a small amount of a gelating agent. Bichromal balls are then formed by heating the capsules and applying an electric field. The capsules are then cooled while the electric field is maintained. Upon sufficient gelling, the electrophoretic particles are fixed within the gelled medium, i.e. the capsule. The bichromal gel produced detaches from the inside wall of the capsule, and thereby constitute the resulting encapsulated bichromal balls.

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a gloss coated paper having specific properties for enhanced toner adhesion. The critical specific properties of the paper include the combination of a thermal diffusivity of less than approximately 8.5 mm2/s, a polar liquid contact angle slope of less than approximately ?12.0 and a non-polar liquid contact angle slope of less than approximately ?5.5. A method of printing gloss coated paper in an electrophotographic apparatus includes forming an image with an electrophotographic toner in the electrophotographic apparatus and transferring the image to the gloss coated paper.

Abstract: Text, images, and/or graphics of electronic documents should be organized and laid out in a two-dimensional format for presentation to the viewer. The best such layout depends upon the content present, the creator's intent, the output device, and the viewer's interests. To analyze the qualitative nature of the layout in quantifiable terms, the electronic document is measure using various quantifiable factors; such as, balance, uniformity, white space management, alignment, consistency, legibility, etc.; that impact a qualitative nature of a document. Such quantifiable factors are then used to quantize the aesthetics, ease of use, eye-catching ability, interest, communicability, comfort, and convenience of the document.

Abstract: Magnetic display devices include low-density silica coated magnetic and nonmagnetic particles. In a one-particle system, low-density silica coated magnetic particles coated by a sol-gel process are used in combination with non-magnetic particles. In a two-particle system, low-density silica coated magnetic particles coated by a sol-gel process are used in combination with low-density silica coated non-magnetic particles. Display devices employing silica coated magnetic particles minimize the tendency of the magnetic particles to aggregate. Silica coated magnetic particles in a display device results in a magnetic display with improved image stability. Low-density silica coated magnetic particles in a display device allow for particles to move easily through a dispersion fluid in response to a magnetic field.

Abstract: A method for encoding and decoding frames by generating a key bitstream such that the key bitstream never has to be stored is disclosed. The method consists of a key generation algorithm using a threshold matrix to generate a key that is very similar to original bitmap data. The key generation algorithm searches the bitmap for equivalent image sets that produce the same bitmaps. These equivalent image sets consist of runlength of constant image values and the actual runlength. Additionally, the image values for the runlengths are never explicitly encoded. During compression a preprocess algorithm XORs the MINIMAL number of hints required to find a equivalent image value for the runlength. The postprocess algorithm is capable of distinguishing if a single bit represents an image value adjustment hint or if it represents the end of a runlength.
Abstract: An image forming device includes: an image carrier that carries an image; a development unit that develops, with toners, a latent image written on the image carrier; an intermediate transfer member to which the toner images formed on the image carrier by the development unit are primarily transferred; and a fixing unit that fixes, to paper, the toner images secondarily transferred from the intermediate transfer member. The image carrier and the intermediate transfer member are unitized to configure an image forming unit, and the image forming unit is disposed in a space sandwiched between the development unit and the fixing unit. The image forming unit further includes a loading/unloading allowing unit that allows the loading/unloading of the image forming unit.
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining the topic structure of a document including text utilize a Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA) model and select segmentation points based on similarity values between pairs of adjacent text blocks. PLSA forms a framework for both text segmentation and topic identification. The use of PLSA provides an improved representation for the sparse information in a text block, such as a sentence or a sequence of sentences. Topic characterization of each text segment is derived from PLSA parameters that relate words to “topics”, latent variables in the PLSA model, and “topics” to text segments. A system executing the method exhibits significant performance improvement. Once determined, the topic structure of a document may be employed for document retrieval and/or document summarization.

Abstract: Document authentication is accomplished by acquiring document image data, generating a set of features of the document, and generating an assist channel that includes information on how to generate the set of features. The set of features and the assist channel are digitally signed and the append to the document. Document verification is accomplished by acquiring document image data and verifying the signature. If the signature is valid, a set of features of the document is generated using information contained in the assist channel appended to the document. The generated set of features is then compared to the set of features appended on the document. If the sets do not match, the document is determined to have been altered sometimes after the assist channel was appended to the document, i.e., the document is not genuine. Otherwise, the document can be considered to be genuine.
