  • Patent number: 6755982
Abstract: A surface micromachining process for the fabrication of three-dimensional micro-hinges directly on silicon on insulator wafers. The process includes the steps of (a) defining openings around the surface of a desired hinge pin in a single layer of a silicon single crystal; (b) subjecting the openings to an etching process for removal of oxide material that is located in contiguous relation to the openings under the area of a hinge; (c) growing thermal oxide to define a gap between the hinge pin and a subsequently deposited polysilicon cap; (d) immediately depositing a thin layer of a chemical vapor deposited oxide sufficient to cover fine gaps not completely covered by the thermal oxide; depositing polysilicon and etching to define a hinge cap; and further etching to allow a mirror to be lifted out of the silicon wafer.

  • Patent number: 6757071
Abstract: An intelligent printer driver is provided. The printer driver includes a printer detector which detects characteristics of a printer to be used to generate a document unless the driver is specific to a known printer. A document detector detects content of the document to be printed. A matching module compares the characteristics of the printer and the content of the document and determines whether the printer and content of the document are mismatched. A notification module notifies a user if the printer and the document are mismatched and a recommendation module generates recommendations to the user as to modifications of the document which are determined to be mismatched by the printer. The user may then select a preview document shown on the monitor, may request further modifications to the document, may print the document without any modifications, or may abort the print process.

  • Patent number: 6757078
Abstract: Techniques for black and white pattern rendering that increase processing speed and reduce memory requirements while providing improved pattern selection performance are provided. The hue angle and lightness of a color input are determined. The hue angle is used to index into a lookup table of halftone functions that specify default frequency and spot functions for a hue angle range. For each selected halftone, the determined hue angle is substituted from the hue angle range if the determined hue angle differs from the last determined hue angle range by more than a threshold difference value. The determined lightness is used to determine the halftoning threshold value and rendering then occurs.

  • Publication number: 20040119684
Abstract: System and method for navigating information. The system includes an information presentation device having an output portion (e.g., display device or audio device) and one or more motion sensors. The method includes the motion sensors monitoring for at least one movement of the information display device while the device dynamically presents information at its output portion. Upon the sensors detecting movement of the device, the device adjusts the manner in which the information is dynamically presented to enable operators of the device to easily navigate to an appropriate location of the information and adjust the manner in which it is dynamically presented (e.g., the rate of the dynamic presentation).

  • Publication number: 20040119999
Abstract: A PDL decision unit analyzes the format of input PDL data to specify a PDL interpreter which must interpret the PDL data. An additional information acquisition unit acquires additional information from the PDL data to supply the additional information to a predetermined PDL interpreter. The predetermined PDL interpreter generates an additional information image on the basis of the additional information. The PDL interpreter specified by the PDL decision unit generates a main image on the basis of the PDL data. An image combining unit combines the main image and the additional information image to output a combined image through an image data output unit.

  • Publication number: 20040119680
Abstract: An electrophoretic display includes a cell having a viewed region and a non-viewed region. The cell contains a suspending fluid and a first particle species and a second particle species dispersed within the suspending fluid. Application of a first electrical field causes the first particle species and the second particle species to vibrate and separate from: one another, the cell walls, the viewed region, and the non-viewed region. Application of a second electric field, in one direction, causes the first particles to migrate toward the viewed region and the second particles to migrate toward the non-viewed region, effecting a color state. The electrophoretic display may be fabricated from multiple display cells arranged on a substrate.

  • Publication number: 20040122812
Abstract: An attribute item information management section collects attribute item information setting attribute name etc. for searching for a service for each type of service, from servers on the same sub-network and from other service search devices, and holds and manages this information in an attribute item information database. An attribute item notification section obtains a list of attribute items that can be written as search conditions within a search string in response to a search request from a client by referring to the attribute item information database, and returns this list. A service search section executes a service search based on a search string designating attribute items selected by the user from the attribute items list, and returns a service information list obtained as search results. In this way, a service search device flexibly handles change in attribute items for services that can be designated as search conditions.

  • Publication number: 20040123300
Abstract: A system and method for assessing component capability to accept and execute mobile code includes a first component coupled via a network to a second component. The first component uses a predicate object to determine whether the second component can accept mobile code, such as a data type handler object or an applet. The instructions included in the predicate object are executed in the environment of the second component, although they can be executed in the first component environment. The execution of these instructions in the second component environment causes the second component to respond to a series of basic tests, such as whether the second component has access to required libraries, software versions and/or peripherals. Additionally, a predicate object creation module is disclosed for generating predicate objects that are specific to the objects desired, such as a data type handler object or a controller object.

  • Publication number: 20040122658
Abstract: Techniques managing syntactic and semantic ambiguity allow two different kinds of processing and representation of ambiguity to work together. The techniques allow linear logic semantic assembly to work with packed functional (f) structures and provide for contexted version of linear logic where semantic contributions are read from the packed functional (f) structure and pre-pended with the contents of the functional (f) structure to which they pertain. Linear logic reasoning may then be performed in the contexted linear logic to derive possible meanings from the contexted contributions from the packed functional (f) structure. Deductions in the contexted linear logic do not require fully expanding each syntactic parse. Techniques applying skeleton/modifier techniques to contexted reasoning are provided by creating a contexted modifier applicable only for certain syntactic readings.
