Publication number: 20040024613Abstract: What is disclosed is a system and method for method for fitness evaluation to be used with a directly calculated or iterative optimization method for automatic document assembly. The method for fitness evaluation includes the steps of first capturing the creator's desire as a set of relative weights to be applied to an intent vector. Then, calculating for each candidate document assembly a set of value-property functions that evaluate properties considered to be factors in a good design (e.g., the balance of the document component on the page). Next, an inferred intent vector needs to be determined for each candidate document assembly as a function of the calculated value property function. Note that if the inferred intent vector is determined by a matrix multiplication applied to the vector of value property function results then the relative weights and intent definition matrix can be multiplied together to provide a weight vector that can be applied directly to the value properties.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 30, 2002Publication date: February 5, 2004Applicant: Xerox CorporationInventors: Steven J. Patent number: 6686930Abstract: A method for copying and pasting a selected portion of an image from a TWAIN compliant image source includes scanning the selected image portion to fit in a target area of a destination image. Dimensional information regarding the selected portion of the source image is made available to the application. The application compares dimensions of the target area with the dimensional information of the selected source image portion and determines resizing parameters. The application requests a scan of the selected portion of the source image based on the resizing parameters and pastes the resulting image in the target area. An image processing system operative to carry out the method includes and a TWAIN compliant application that is adapted to calculate resizing parameters and request scans basted on the resizing parameters. In a xerographic environment, the image processing system includes a xerographic printer.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2000Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: John G. Patent number: 6687404Abstract: A two-dimensional (2D) image model models the layout structure of a class of document images as an image grammar and includes production rules having explicit layout parameters as data items that indicate information about the spatial relationships among image constituents occurring in images included in the class. The parameters are explicitly represented in the grammar rules in a manner that permits them to be automatically trained by a training operation that makes use of sample document images from the class of modeled documents. After each sample image is aligned with the 2D grammar, document-specific measurements about the spatial relationships between image constituents are taken from the image. Optimal values for the layout parameters are then computed from the measurement data collected from all samples.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1997Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Jesse Hull, Philip A. Patent number: 6687875Abstract: A table editing apparatus spares users wasteful editing work in determining relative positional relations between cell boundaries of a table. The apparatus includes a cell boundary movement designating unit, a cell boundary position coincidence judging unit, and a cell boundary moving unit. The cell boundary movement designating unit designates a cell boundary to be moved and a direction in which to move the cell boundary. The cell boundary position coincidence judging unit checks cell boundaries retained by the cell boundary holding unit to see whether there is any cell boundary which is also a vertical (horizontal) cell boundary and which has the same horizontal (vertical) position as the designated cell boundary. Given the judgment from the cell boundary position coincidence judging unit, the cell boundary moving unit moves the designated cell boundary in the cell boundary holding unit to a position such that the structure of the table is changed.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2000Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd.Inventor: Akira Suzuki

Patent number: 6687480Abstract: A contact blade, formed of a plurality of blade segments, is mounted parallel to and spaced from an imaging surface. A plurality of blade lifters, one blade lifter for each of the blade segments, are individually movable from an inoperative position immediately adjacent to the blade segments to an operative position. When in the operative position the engage lifters engage the blade segments and deflect the blade segments. This causes tips of the blade segments to contact a print sheet contacting the imaging surface and press the print sheet against the imaging surface. A lifter activating device moves a current select number of adjacent blade lifters into the operative position.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2002Date of Patent: February 3, 2004Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Brendan P.
