Patent number: 6182961Abstract: The disclosure relates to separating and feeding previously printed document sheets from a stack with reduced inter-sheet document image smearing using a retard-type sheet separator-feeder. For duplex documents, the intermittent drive system for the retard feeder drives the sheet being fed downstream out of the retard nip for only a short initial feeding distance which is only a minor portion of the document dimension, then reverse drives the sheet in the upstream direction for only a short reverse distance sufficient to eject all the sheets from the retard nip other then the one being fed out. Meanwhile a nudger system feeding sheets from the stack to the retard nip is disengaged. Then the feeder is driven in the downstream sheet feeding direction again, but for a much longer sheet feeding distance, Thus, the sheet being fed by the retard feeder may be fed out of the retard nip without duplex document image smearing against other sheets in the retard nip.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1998Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Stephen J. Patent number: 6185400Abstract: A container for storing a supply of toner particles therein is used in a developer unit of an electrophotographic printing machine. The container has a discharge port connected to a chamber storing the supply of toner therein. A movable member is positioned in the chamber of the container. The movable member includes a planar surface. When the planar surface is positioned remote from the discharge port, the planar surface receives toner particles. When the planar surface is positioned in engagement with the discharge port, toner particles are discharged from the planar surface through the discharge port. In this way, the member functions to seal the toner container when the toner container is in an non-operative position remote from the developer unit, and to meter precise quantities of toner particles to the developer roller of the developer unit when the toner container is in the developer unit in the operating mode thereof.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1999Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Ismael R. Patent number: 6185328Abstract: A system and method classify a pixel of image data as one of a plurality of image types. A first image characteristic value for the pixel, a second image characteristic value for the pixel, a third image characteristic value for the pixel, and a fourth image characteristic for the pixel is determined. Some of these determinations may be resolution dependent. The values from these determination are utilized in assigning an image type classification to the pixel. Moreover, if at least one of the image characteristic values is greater than a predetermined threshold value the pixel is classified as a halftone peak value.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1998Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Jeng-Nan Shiau

Patent number: 6185336Abstract: A system and method electronically image process a pixel belonging to a set of digital image data with respect to a membership of the pixel in a plurality of image classes. This process uses fuzzy classification to determine a membership value for the pixel for each image classes and generates an effect tag for the pixel based on the fuzzy classification determination. The pixel is image processed based on the membership vector of the pixel. The determination of the membership value also includes the determination of the halftone frequency of the pixel. The present process injects random noise into the frequency estimate before classification to avoid having a sharp shift in the pixel classification population as the ripple in the frequency microclassifier crosses the quantization threshold.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1998Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Raymond J. Patent number: 6185013Abstract: Mapping of full color images to two-highlight color images which provides excellent results for both pictorial image and presentation graphics applications is described. Shades and tints for each hue in the original full color image are mapped to a corresponding triangle of colors in a tetrahedral of possible colors defined by the two highlight colors. The apex of the triangle of colors is varied within the tetrahedral of possible colors according to hue. Differentiations in the result colors for the fully saturated cases is provided while preserving the relative saturation and lightness behavior. The triangle of colors maps to a first triangle bordering one side of the tetrahedral, the first triangle corresponding to a first one of the highlight colors or a second triangle bordering another side of the tetrahedral, the second triangle corresponding to a second one of the highlight colors when the hue of the original colors matches one of the highlight hues.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1996Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Steven J. Patent number: 6183073Abstract: A printbar, such as a full width array printbar, filling method and apparatus provides for the selective application of positive pressure to an ink container, such as an ink bag, for forcing the expulsion of ink out of the bag and into the printbar. A steady force is applied until ink appears in a window provided in a vent line adjacent to and in fluid communication with the printbar, at which time the printbar manifold is full. Additional steady pressure forces ink to flow into the ink jet channels, assuring that the channels are fully primed and functional, at which time the positive pressure can be stopped. In an alternative embodiment, a motive force provided by, for example, a solenoid or motor, preferably including a gear and cam, are included to provide the motive force for the application of pressure against the ink bag. Pressure limiting springs may be utilized to provide the desired positive pressure to the ink manifold.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1999Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Robert M. Patent number: 6184916Abstract: Multiple pulse width and position modulation methods and systems use multiple pulse width and position modulation (PWPM) circuits driven from the same system clock and video data to provide multiple video pulses per clock period. The multiple pulse width and position modulation methods and systems separately provide extremely fine halftone structures from n-bit per pixel video data words. The halftone structures can be provided without the need for extremely high resolution raster output scanners, associated optics and high speed electronics. The multiple pulse width and position modulation system (PWPM) can produce video pulses of variable width and position within a pixel period with extremely high addressability. The pulses output from multiple, independent pulse width and position modulation (PWPM) channels can be combined to form structured multiple video pulse patterns within the video clock or pixel period from a given n bit video data word.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1999Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Michael S.
