Abstract: An engine renders digitally represented images in a reduced marking material mode and in other modes. A digitally represented unsharp mask of an image is produced and combined with the image. When in the reduced marking material mode, the unsharp mask is given a relatively high weight, such as 2.0 or higher. When in another mode, such as a normal printing mode, the unsharp mask is given substantially less weight, such as about 1.0.
Abstract: A method and system automatically determines the width (i.e., left and right edges) of a document when it is loaded for scanning or copying. When a document is staged, the scanner collects a predetermined number scanlines of the leadedge of the document. Both first order and second order statistics of the scanner and document are then calculated based on the scanned data. The auto-width detection process is adaptive to CCD sensor output variation, document variation, and scanner variation, thus making it robust against dust in the sensor path and random fluctuations of the scanner.
Abstract: The present invention discloses an image recording member in which a layer containing a setting type silicone resin having a Knoop hardness number of from 1 to 145 on the surface of a substrate made of paper, plastics or the like. Furthermore, this invention discloses a method for recycling an image recording member comprising the steps of contacting the image recording member with the outermost surface of an image releasing member, the outermost layer being formed from a pressure-sensitive adhesive or the like such as hot-melt silicone resin, heating these material and member to transfer a toner from the image recording member to the image releasing member, and separating the image recording member from the image releasing member. Thus, the invention can maintain good fixing of an image forming material with respect to the image recording member, while the image forming material can be removed from the image recording member without damaging the recording surface.
Abstract: A color electrophotographic printer that prepares a composite toner image for transfer by exposing an image area containing the composite toner image to an erase lamp and then running the composite toner image by an AC scorotron.

Abstract: A pressure sensor is provided which can detect the presence, absence or magnitude of pressure, as well as a pressure profile. The pressure sensor includes a sensor membrane and a sensor device. The sensor membrane is flexible and may be constructed of a conductive material or may include a flexible film attached to a conductive film. The sensor device includes a sensor strip, a voltage source, and an electrical sensor. The sensor strip includes both a conductive strip and a resistive strip. The conductive strip is arranged parallel to the resistive strip. As pressure is applied to the sensor membrane, the sensor membrane distends or deforms towards the sensor strip. As sufficient pressure is applied, the sensor membrane will make both electrical and mechanical contact with both the conductive strip and the resistive strip at a point along the length of the sensor strip. Since the sensor membrane is conductive, the conductive strip and the resistive strip will be in electrical connection with each other.

Abstract: An image data adjustment system is described which adjusts image data to be printed based upon the level of contaminants detected in the toner reservoirs. The system detects the level of contamination of a toner to be printed and adjusts the image data so that a compensating toner is also printed with the desired toner so that an intended print color is achieved despite contaminants in the toner.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus of the present invention includes at least an image carrier and a contact type charging device. The image forming apparatus further includes a control control device that controls the contact type charging device so as to apply DC voltage having the same polarity as the charging polarity of the image carrier to the image carrier at the same time that or before rotation of the image carrier begins and successively applies a voltage in which AC voltage is superimposed on the DC voltage at the same time that or after the DC voltage is applied and at the latest after the rotation of the image carrier begins. Therefore, according to the present invention, electrostatic memory in the image carrier is prevented, so that the occurrence of black stripe or the like corresponding to a contact point of the contact type charging device is prevented, thereby enabling formation of high quality images.
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a digital imaging system. More specifically, the present invention provides an improved method and apparatus for calculating toner age using a toner concentration sensor and mass sensor to ensure image quality by anticipating or diagnosing problems in image quality, which may be caused by toner age. These problems include low developability, high background, and halo defects appearing on sheets of support material.

Abstract: Provided is an image forming method, in which image glossiness is the same as a recording medium regardless of the values of an image density or an image area percentage, especially an image excellent in not only color reproducibility but granularity is obtained and in addition, no cracks are produced in the surface layer of the recording medium after the image is formed, and a recording medium preferably used in the method. The method comprises the steps of: forming a toner image on an image carrier; placing the image formed on the image carrier on a transparent thermoplastic resin layer of a recording medium in a close contact condition, wherein the transparent thermoplastic resin layer is provided at a surface roughness (Ra) of 1.0 .mu.m or less on an opaque base of the recording medium; and heating the toner image thus placed in the close contact condition to transfer and fix the image on the transparent resin layer.

Abstract: A data outputting system realizes tacit viewing by representing pieces of peripheral data related to focused data to which a user pays attention at an appropriate timing. In the system, the data to which the user pays attention is selected by a data designating element as focused data from the plural pieces of data held by a database, and a focused data representing element makes the outputting element output the focused data. A peripheral data determining element selects the pieces of peripheral data from the plural pieces of data held by the database based on the degree of relation to the focused data, and a timing determining element determines the timing of representation of the peripheral data in accordance with the attributes of the focused data, the history of representation of the focused data in the past, the attributes of the user, and so on. Then a peripheral data representing element makes the outputting element output the pieces of peripheral data at the determined timing.
Abstract: The present invention provides a tabulation device which may both automatically determine the line spacing of grid structure of a table and automatically line breaking text string in a cell, with less computing costs. In this device for retaining grid structure retains the relationship of the relative position of cells in a table and the text strings to be laid out to each cell. Text field size threshold retains, with respect to each text string, discontinuous points in the line-breaking function as the threshold value of the size of text field. Table layout selects one of the corresponding threshold values from within the text field size threshold for the text string to be laid out, and storing in text field size retaining unit as the size of text field to perform the layout. Layout evaluating evaluates the allocation results of the table from the size of text field in the text field size retaining unit and directs table allocating to reallocate if requirements are not satisfied.
