Abstract: Many compression algorithms require the compressor to generate trees (tables) for encoding purposes. To generate the optimum tree for a set of Huffman symbols either takes too much time or requires too much hardware. This invention proposes to separate the symbols into groups according to the symbol's occurring frequency. With these groups of symbols available, subsequent code length assignment of these groups can be done without a complete sorting of all the symbols and their parents. During code length assignment, some relocation of individual symbols from one group to another can also be performed to optimize the Huffman table. In most of the cases this technique can achieve a compression ratio within 5% of the optimum Huffman table, while requiring less hardware or software overhead.
Abstract: Embedded in a transport assembly are arrays of microelectromechanical devices for detecting and making adjustments for perceived changes in their environment. The arrays of sensors and actuators are tightly coupled to each other so that coordinated action of neighboring actuators minimizes the cumulative effort required to move the object. The sensors and actuators are controlled using a multi-hierarchical organization of computational elements. Each computational element in lower levels of the multi-hierarchy communicates with one or more higher level computational elements to define zones of control. An object moving along the transport assembly lies principally in the domain of at least one zone of control. As an object moves along the transport assembly, dominant control over the object moves along the transport with the object.
Abstract: A document storage apparatus of a document reading system. The document storage apparatus has a document storage section which stores a document created by a document creating apparatus and having a plurality of pages by forming the document into an electronic document in which at least one set of image data is stored in page units. When a read demand has been issued from a document reading apparatus, a read demand receiving and analyzing section receives the read demand to analyze the required contents. The required electronic document is, in page units, acquired from the document storage section so as to be processed into a format meeting the required contents by a document processing section. Then, a response data generating section generates response data in which reference information with which page instruction is enabled when a next read demand is issued is embedded. The response data formed in page units is transmitted to a document reading apparatus by a document transmitting section.
Abstract: An elastic jointing member 22 with an umbrella-like portion with an opening and a flat part is provided in a jointing portion between a recording head 21 and an ink tank 1. When the ink tank 1 is attached to the recording head 21, the umbrella-like portion of the elastic jointing member 22 is pressed against the ink tank and elastically deformed inward. As a result, an ink passage is formed which is airtightly sealed. In the process of pressing the umbrella-like portion against the ink tank, the umbrella-like portion comes in contact with the flat part, to thereby prevent air from staying in the ink passage. Protrusions or grooves may be provided between the umbrella-like portion and the flat part. With the protrusions or the groove, the umbrella-like portion is not glued to the flat part.

Abstract: A grey image value expansion method or system enables a receiving system to convert image data having a lower bit resolution to the higher native bit resolution of the receiving system. The conversion or expansion produces a new pixel byte which is a compilation of the received pixel byte wherein the received pixel byte has been repeated at least two times in the compilation. More specifically, a pixel byte having a bit resolution equal to A is converted to a new pixel byte having a bit resolution equal to B wherein the new pixel byte is a compilation of the received pixel byte. The received pixel byte is a unit of the new pixel byte such that the received pixel byte is repeated N times in the compilation wherein N being an integer equal to or greater than two. The number of repeating received pixel byte can be varied so long as N times A is less than or equal to B.
Abstract: In an ejector for a thermal ink-jet printhead, a heating element exposing an area to liquid ink in the printhead includes an insulative layer around the lateral edges thereof, particularly those edges not having conductors associated therewith. This insulation creates a more uniform temperature distribution over the heating area, resulting in a uniform nucleation of a vapor bubble within the liquid ink.

Abstract: A simple hinge having an integral detent and stop member for a cover on an electrophotographic printing machine. The hinge is formed from a relatively lightweight material and has an aperture to secore a pin for attaching a cover. A detent is formed into on leg of the hinge so that the door cover is forced over the detent as it is opened which then holds the door in the open position. The cover is closed by pushing the edge of the door over the detent in the opposite direction.
Abstract: This invention provides rate shaping in per-flow output queued routing mechanisms for available bit rate (ABR) service in networks having segmented ABR control loops.
Abstract: A fusible link circuit including a preview feature and a method for programming or calibrating therefore. The fusible link circuit includes a fusible link, including a threshold above which the fusible link will be forced to an open condition with the application of a threshold condition applied thereto and a circuit, coupled to the fusible link, including an input and an output, generating an output signal on the output in response to a signal being applied to the input, wherein the output signal provides an output state which simulates the open condition of the fusible link as a preview feature. The fusible link circuit includes the preview feature so that the output of any circuit, which must be calibrated, programmed, or have its output set to a predetermined value, can be simulated or previewed to determine whether the correct output is obtainable without destroying the fusible links.

Abstract: A registration pattern is formed on an intermediate transfer belt by using one photosensitive body. Pattern parts transferred onto the intermediate transfer belt vary in spacing due to speed variation occurring at the transfer time. The passing timing of the registration pattern is read through a read section placed downstream from the photosensitive body and speed (position) variation is sensed. The sense data is gotten over several cycles of the intermediate transfer belt and a low-frequency component caused by thickness unevenness of the intermediate transfer belt is extracted. The extracted data is subjected to the effects of variations at both the formation time and read time of the registration pattern and thus is corrected of calculating true speed (position) variation data. For example, a drive roll is controlled based on the data and an image is formed.
Abstract: A light scanning device deflects a plurality of light beams by a deflecting means performs divided scanning on a single scanning line on a photoconductor with the plurality of deflected light beams. When the scanning line is scanned, a detecting means detects a light beam passing through a predetermined position in front of a position where the light beam first strikes an image forming range on the photoconductor. An oscillating means oscillates a specified number of clocks in a time interval from when the light beam is detected by the detecting means until it is detected thereby again. An adjusting means makes adjustments so as to irradiate a plurality of light beams based on clocks oscillated by the oscillating means. In a time interval after the light beam is detected by the detecting means until it is detected thereby again, a plurality of light beams are irradiated based on the specified number of clocks.
Abstract: The method and apparatus of the present invention generates clusters of documents in a collection of linked documents based on co-citation analysis. The frequency linkage is determined for each document in the collection. In other words, the number of times each document is linked to by another document in the collection is determined. Further, a minimum frequency linkage (link frequency threshold) is specified based on a predetermined minimum frequency of document linkage. Additionally, a list of pairs of documents that are linked to by the same document is created so that each of the pairs of documents has a count of the number of times (co-citation frequency) that they are both linked to by another document. Pairs of linked documents are clustered using a suitable co-citation technique.

Abstract: A tag display control system displays document pages to which tags are attached in offset overlapped relation. In the system, page size information, and attachment position information and size information of each of tags attached to each page are stored in a display data table, and a tag control section determines overlap of a tag to a lower page with respect to an upper page or a tag to an upper page based on the page overlap order information, the page size information, and the attachment position information and size information of the tags. If the lower page tag is hidden under the upper page or upper page tag, the tag control section changes the attachment position information or size information of the lower page tag or reduces the size of the upper page tag for changing the attachment position or size so as to display the lower page tag on an output section.
