Abstract: A blotter/charging device is provided for simultaneously removing excess liquid carrier from a developed toner image and recharging a photoreceptor in preparation for generating and developing another electrostatic latent image on the photoreceptor. The blotter/charging device is useful for all types of liquid developing systems that generate two or more toner images on a photoreceptor, including image-next-to-image, image-on-image, highlight and other types of systems. A method is also provided for generating a plurality of toner images on a support wherein excess liquid carrier is removed from a developed toner image simultaneous with recharging of the support in preparation for generating and developing a second electrostatic image on the support.

Abstract: The present invention provides an electrostatic image developer comprising a toner and a carrier wherein the toner includes toner particles having an average particle diameter of 3 to 9 .mu.m, a hydrophobic silica microparticles having a BET specific surface area of 40 to 120 m.sup.2 /g, and a hydrophobic titanium compound microparticles having a BET specific surface area of 40 to 250 m.sup.2 /g; and wherein the carrier is a resin coated carrier having a coating layer of a resin. The electrostatic image developer can improve the environmental dependency of charging, power fluidity, resistance to caking of a toner and reduced change in charging with time course to provide an image with an excellent image quality for a long period of time.
Abstract: A method of control to synchronize the arrival of images and copy sheets at a transfer station by sensing delay of a copy sheet arrival at the transfer station. There is then a determination that the delay of arrival is incapable of being corrected to synchronize with a given image. In response, the control decides to rewrite the given image on the receiving medium or further delay the arrival of the copy sheet, or a combination of rewrite and delay, in order that the arrival of a given image and copy sheet is synchronized.

Abstract: A fast scan error measuring system of a raster output scanner (ROS) is provided in order to determine whether the laser beam position in the fast scan direction is within acceptable operational parameters. A detector, for example, a linescan or area array camera, is used to acquire multiple successive images from each facet of the ROS as the unit is operating. For each rotating facet the position of a beam spot (centroid) at the end of scan line is measured. A sufficient number of centroids are collected so that a Fourier transform of the centroids will produce an accurate spatial frequency spectrum measured in cycles per millimeter. This spectrum can be easily compared to the product's fast scan error specification limits.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a vertical cavity surface emitting laser device comprising a plurality of semiconductor layers formed upon a substrate and capable of emitting a laser beam of a selected wavelength and a selected polarization, wherein said polarization is established by the presence of stress inducing elements disposed on said free surface of the laser device which induce a stress in the active layers of the laser device. The stress inducing elements are made of a material having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the material which comprises the surface layer of the laser device.
Abstract: A joint part of an ink tank has a connection part capillary member. A filter is placed at the tip of an ink introduction part on the side of a recording head. The ink tank is connected by bringing a face of the filter into contact with the connection part capillary member; liquid connection is made without entry of air. At this time, a force of pressing the connection part capillary member against the inside of the ink tank occurs. However, since the connection part capillary member is provided with a presser part on the rear side, the presser part absorbs the press pressure and the contact state is stable, preventing the connection part capillary member from being detached to the inside of the ink tank. Additionally, the ink tank has a seal material for sealing the ink supply hole in a state in which the tank joint part is detached from the recording head joint part.

Abstract: A self-clocking glyph code is provided for encoding n-bit long digital values (where n>1) in a logically ordered sequence of composite glyphs that are written, printed, or otherwise recorded on a hardcopy recording medium in accordance with a predetermined spatial formatting rule. As used herein, a "composite glyph" is a graphical symbol that has a plurality of predefined, substantially orthogonal, graphical characteristics; each of which is capable of assuming any one of a plurality of predefined graphical states. An n-bit long digital value is distributively encoded in a glyph of this type by decomposing its n-bits, prior to or during the encoding, into a plurality of shorter, ordered, non-overlapping bit strings. The digital values of these bit strings, in turn, are encoded in the states of respective graphical characteristics of the composite glyph in a predetermined logical order, thereby preserving the logical ordering of the bit strings.

Abstract: A reliable non-sliding transfusing assembly is provided for receiving liquid toner images from an image bearing member. The transfusing assembly includes a continuous intermediate transfer belt forming a belt loop and having an inner surface and a toner image carrying outer surface; a first backing roller having a first diameter and mounted into contact with the inner surface of the belt loop for forming a toner image receiving nip between the belt loop and an image bearing member; and a second backing roller mounted oppositely from the first backing roller and into contact with the inner surface of the belt loop for forming a transfusing nip between the belt loop and an external roller.
Abstract: A fixing device comprises a heat fixing roller in which a heat resistant elastic layer is formed on a cylindrical metal core and, further, a heat resistant resin layer is coated on the surface thereof, an endless belt, a pressure member disposed in the inside of the endless belt, wherein the endless belt is wound around the heat fixing roller for a predetermined angle to form a nip area between the endless belt and the heat fixing roller for allowing a recording sheet to pass therethrough, the pressure member is pressed by way of the endless belt to the heat fixing roller at the nip area thereby forming distortion in the heat resistant elastic layer of the heat fixing roller. An image forming apparatus using the fixing device can satisfy improved image quality, extended working life, energy saving and high speed operation altogether.

Abstract: A toner cartridge is mounted movably on a developer unit of a printing machine. The toner cartridge stores a quantity of toner particles therein. A bar code is provided on the exterior surface of the toner cartridge. The bar code provides information concerning the toner particles within the housing. A bar code reader periodically detects the bar code and transmits information to a processing unit indicating the characteristics of the toner cartridge. This enables discrimination between different toner cartridges, ensuring that the proper toner cartridge is installed in the developer unit of the printing machine. In addition, the processing unit, in response to receiving a signal indicating that the bar code has been detected, provides a signal indicative of the quantity of toner particles remaining in the toner cartridge. This signal is transmitted to a graphical user interface which displays the remaining quantity of toner particles in the cartridge.

Abstract: An electrophotographic machine has a photoreceptive member supporting a composite color toner image formed of multiple layers of different colored toners. The composite toner image is pre-transfer charged at a first voltage level and recharge at a second voltage level less than the first voltage level. The background toner is preferentially charged by the second charging to reduce transfer of the background toner to the substrate.
Abstract: An endless flexible seamed belt with a mechanically and electrically invisible seam, substantially equivalent in performance to a seamless belt, is formed by joining two ends of substrate material, each end of which has a plurality of mutually mating elements in a puzle cut pattern which are in interlocking relationship. After the two ends are joined, an bonding is applied to the seam of the belt. When the belt is to be an electrostatographic imaging member, the electrostatics of the belt become very important. The two ends of a flexible substrate with a conductive coating applied thereto are interlocked and a conductive bonding is applied to the gap between the interlocking surfaces. The undercoating layer can then be applied to the adhered seam in order to smooth the seamed surface for application of the charge generating layer and the charge transfer layer. The undercoating layer may be relatively thicker than current undercoating layers to insure that the seam surface is smooth.
