  • Patent number: 5848180
Abstract: A bitmap-based digital color printing method and system is described which automatically detects when a black object is commanded to be printed, and changes the Bit Block Transfer (BitBlt) method so that the resultant composition of the black color at each point in the bitmap is responsive to the amount of non-black colorants already existing in the background color at that position on the page. For many printing systems the resulting prints exhibit fewer visual defects. Single-color black objects printed on top of a color field are printed as process black responsive to the background color. Therefore, they exhibit a greater density and gloss and show fewer problems caused by the misregistration of separations or other printer defects, such as white fringes around the black objects. They also avoid problems caused by excessive ink coverage differences between foreground black and background color.

  • Patent number: 5848337
Abstract: A method and apparatus for eliminating undesirable development of background charge potentials in a multicolor electrostatographic system is disclosed, wherein the application of a developer bias at a given development station is selectively controlled to be substantially equal to or greater than the background image voltage of the image generated by a preceding imaging station such that the voltage differential between toner particles at the development station and the background areas including the previous image areas is substantially zero and the electrostatic forces acting on the toner particles are insufficient to attract the toner particles to the residual image.

  • Patent number: 5842624
Abstract: A pivot is provided on or in the vicinity of the axis of binding portions of a stapler main body, and rotatably supports a front end portion of a stapler main body. A driving system swings the stapler main body about the pivot within a given angular range. Having the above pivot and driving system, a binding angle changing mechanism changes a binding angle formed by the side of recording sheets and the stapler main body by use of drive force of the driving system. An advance/retreat mechanism advances or retreats the stapler main body perpendicularly to the side of the recording sheets between a retreat position that is distant from a subject end portion of the recording sheets and a binding position where the binding portions are to bite the subject end portion.

  • Patent number: 5845288
Abstract: A system for image indexing for the domain of technical manual documents depicting line drawing images of physical equipment. Such line drawings are often associated with text labels that indicate references to component parts in an associated table. The indexing system locates regions containing a machine part in relevant pages of the manual in response to a query describing the part. The query supplied by the user is a textual description of the machine part from which an associated geometric description of the object is retrieved. The indexing mechanism includes two stages, i.e., selection and recognition. The selection phase involves isolating relevant images from the document database using a combination to textual and visual processing and indicating the appropriate regions within those images that are likely to contain the queried machine part.

  • Patent number: 5843259
Abstract: A method is described for uniformly coating portions of the surface of a substrate which is to be bonded to another substrate. In a described embodiment, the two substrates are channel plates and heater plates which, when bonded together, form a thermal ink jet printhead. The adhesive layer is electrophoretically deposited over a conductive pattern which has been formed on the binding substrate surface. The conductive pattern forms an electrode and is placed in an electrophoretic bath comprising a colloidal emulsion of a preselected polymer adhesive. The other electrode is a metal container in which the solution is placed or a conductive mesh placed within the container. The electrodes are connected across a voltage source and a field is applied. The substrate is placed in contact with the solution, and a small current flow is carefully controlled to create an extremely uniform thin deposition of charged adhesive micelles on the surface of the conductive pattern.

  • Patent number: 5845304
Abstract: A plurality of document information is divided into intrinsic data concerning descriptive contents of a document and common data that includes attributes of the descriptive contents, and is stored within a memory. Based on the document processing instructions inputted from an input section, intrinsic data stored within the memory undergoes edit processing with an intrinsic operation unit; also, based on document processing instructions, multiple common data stored within the memory undergoes change processing with a common operation section. These processing results are mutually reflected by a conversion section, and based on this intrinsic data and common data, document images are display on an output display section. Then, a retrieve section, based on the attributes designated by the input section, retrieves, from the memory, document information that possess these attributes, and displays this information on the display section.

  • Patent number: 5842694
Abstract: A stack height control assembly utilizing the feedhead as the height sensing member. As a result of incorporating the stack height sensor into the feedhead, several advantages are realized. There is no additional drag imparted to the sheets as the result of a sensing arm or other sensing member. This also reduces the possibility of skewing the sheets with an additional sensing member. The feedhead, due to the normal force required to acquire the sheets also provides an accurate measurement of stack height. The normal force of the feedhead also eliminates and inaccuracies that could be caused by curled sheets in a feed tray. The stack height is also measured "on the fly" as the sheets are being acquired and fed, thus providing an efficient stack height sensing scheme. A floating coupler and sensor flag arrangement can be mounted so that it is engaged with a paper supply drawer as the drawer is moved into an operative position.
