  • Patent number: 5717978
Abstract: An electrostatographic printing machine having an imaging member with a surface voltage potential and a control system having changeable set point parameters to provide a dual level of control of the voltage potential. A compensator responsive to a reference signal and the surface voltage potential provides one input signal and one level of control to a summing nod and a look up table responsive to the changing of the set point pa provides a second input signal and a second level of control to the summing node to adjust the surface voltage potential. Two levels of table look up feed forward adjustment are also provided for developer control. Within one use of some form of look up tables to move one operating point by varying nominal values a state space control model of one electrostatic printing machine is developed. Control model is used to design good process loop compensators.

  • Patent number: 5714990
Abstract: The printing operation of an ink jet printer is controlled based on the density of the image to be printed. Using the density, a required drying time for each swath of printed matter is determined based on the image density. Also using the density, a maximum print frequency of firing the ink jets is determined. The density is determined by filtering stored print data by dividing the print data into blocks and determining a maximum number of ON pixels in a block. Such filtering enables clusters of ON pixels to be detected thus providing a more accurate determination of the density.

  • Patent number: 5714697
Abstract: A system for measuring the mass of a sheet of material including an actuator, a position sensing system, and a tactile sensor system. The actuator imparts a known force to a sheet, moving it through to the position sensing system, which measures the sheet velocity at various points. Afterward, the sheet moves through the tactile sensor system, which determines the coefficient of friction of the sheet. Given these quantities, a controller can determine the mass of the sheet, which can be used alter the performance of a reproductive machine. A second embodiment of the mass measuring system includes an actuator, a position sensing system, and a subsystem for eliminating friction. The actuator applies a force to a sheet to move it into and through the subsystem. The position sensing system incorporated in the subsystem senses the acceleration of the sheet. Given this quantity, a controller can determine the mass of the sheet.

  • Patent number: 5715379
Abstract: A digital printing system includes a plurality of decomposers which operate simultaneously and independently. Each decomposer outputs page images of decomposed data at essentially random times. The page images from the decomposers are retained in a buffer until requested by a marker which controls the printer hardware. A buffer manager records where in the buffer each page image is stored, and a stream handle is assigned to every set of page images intended to form a multi-page document. When the marker requests a particular set of page images for printing, the marker invokes a stream handle. The buffer manager, receiving the stream handle, retrieves the necessary page images from recorded locations in the buffer.

  • Patent number: 5715403
Abstract: A system for controlling use and distribution of digital works. The present invention allows the owner of a digital work to attach usage rights to their work. The usage rights define how the individual digital work may be used and distributed. Instances of usage rights are defined using a flexible and extensible usage rights grammar. Conceptually, a right in the usage rights grammar is a label associated with a predetermined behavior and conditions to exercising the right. The behavior of a usage right is embodied in a predetermined set of usage transactions steps. The usage transaction steps further check all conditions which must be satisfied before the right may be exercised. These usage transaction steps define a protocol for requesting the exercise of a right and the carrying out of a right.
