Abstract: In a hard copy document production machine using a plurality of different type cartridges containing different document production consumable materials, an orientation-independent cartridge type discriminating system assembly suitable for enabling non-burdensome orientation-independent loading of a correct cartridge into a cartridge opening in the machine, and for resiliently intercepting and preventing loading of an incorrect cartridge into the cartridge opening. The discriminating system assembly includes a resilient assembly mounted to a portion of the frame of the machine defining the cartridge opening, a first spring member, and a pivotable elongate member connected to the spring member for providing resilient cartridge contact with a cartridge being inserted. The elongate member has a displaceable portion, and a cartridge blocking portion spaced from the displaceable portion in a direction of cartridge insertion.
Abstract: A cap actuating assembly for an ink supply cartridge of a printer includes a pivoting member adapted for rotation about a pin between first and second positions. An actuating arm extends from the pivoting member and is operatively engaged by a printhead to begin the rotation and advancement of the cap into a sealed position. The entire cap actuating assembly is also slidably received on a support rail for limited movement between first and second stop members. Biasing members assist in removing the cap assembly from its sealed engagement and preparing the cap actuating assembly for sealing the printhead during the next storage operation.

Abstract: Pyroelectric materials are used to create net charge/surface potentials for use in xerographic charge and transfer steps. Heating and cooling a pyroelectric film, such as, polyvinylidene fluoride induces thermal expansion or contraction which create surface charge density changes that can be used to charge a photoconductive surface and/or transfer an image from a photoconductive surface to a copy sheet.

Abstract: An electrophotographic printing machine that transfers an image at a transfer work station or zone incorporates an adjustable electromechanical pretransfer paper guide to affect entrance geometry and paper landing position onto a photoreceptor, thereby minimizing image deletion.
Abstract: An optical scanning device of the thin film waveguide type, which has a scanning speed and excellent scanning accuracy that can be used in a laser beam printer, a digital copier, a facsimile apparatus or the like, and an image forming apparatus using the optical scanning device are disclosed. The optical scanning device comprising: a thin film waveguide; a light source for emitting a plurality of laser beams to the thin film waveguide; a comb-like electrode for exciting a surface acoustic wave for deflecting the laser beams in the thin film waveguide; and a plurality of emitting means for emitting the deflected laser beams to an outside of the thin film waveguide, the emitting means being equal in number to the laser beams is disclosed. In an embodiment, the plurality of emitting means are located at the same position in a traveling direction of the incident laser beams, and have different emittance angles.
Abstract: To print an image having a 600 dpi resolution along the horizontal axis with an ink jet printer that has a 300 dpi resolution, the method maintains the edges of the pixel image and uses a checkerboard pattern for all interior pixels other than the second pixel and the second last pixel of each pixel row. Therefore, the method is neighbor insensitive by using a checkerboard pattern or mask to determine the state of the interior pixels. After turning OFF the respective pixels, ink drops are fired from the ink jet printer at areas corresponding to the remaining ON pixels. This visibly reproduces the image at the 600 dpi resolution.
Abstract: There is provided a method and device for automatically selecting a gloss finish for a print from an electrophotographic printing machine. The image characteristics and color content are determined and if the characteristics and content exceed a predetermined level, an auto gloss signal is generated by the machine controller. In one instance, a glossy substrate is selected upon which to print the image. In a second instance the fuser is adjusted so as to produce a glossy image output on the substrate. There is also a user selectable mode in which either all prints can be produced on a gloss substrate or on a matte substrate depending on the desired state.
Abstract: A sound processing system is provided in which a sound signal is stored in a sound data storing unit in the form of digital sound data. The digital sound data is analyzed to obtain a physical feature quantity of the sound signal. Index data indicative of a quantity feature of the sound signal is generated by discriminating a physical feature quantity of the sound signal, and it is stored in an index data storing unit. The digital sound data is processed in accordance with the index data by a data processing unit.
Abstract: A printer includes an active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) light valve with a matrix of a plurality of filter elements, a backlight that emits a plurality of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy that correspond to the plurality of filter elements, and a multi-layer photoreceptor that is sensitive to the plurality of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy. The backlight flash exposes the AMLCD light valve. The distinct wavelengths of electromagnetic energy passing through each of the filter elements of the AMLCD light valve are focused onto the surface of the photoreceptor. Each layer of the photoreceptor is sensitive to only one of the distinct wavelengths of electromagnetic energy passing through the filter elements of the AMLCD light valve. Thus, a full color latent image is flash exposed onto the photoreceptor. A very compact lenslet array is used to focus the image onto the photoreceptor.
Abstract: An ink-jet printhead accepts a series of digital addresses as image data. Each digital address causes an individual ejector in the printhead having the particular address to be activated. The frequency of operation of the printhead can be directly related to the frequency at which addresses are submitted to the printhead. A scheduler polls image data for spot placements which require simultaneous activation of a plurality of ejectors in a set of interdependent ejectors, and then reschedules the activation of ejectors to avoid conflicts.

Abstract: A method and apparatus accesses relevant documents based on a query. A thesaurus of word vectors is formed for the words in the corpus of documents. The word vectors represent global lexical co-occurrence patterns and relationships between word neighbors. Document vectors, which are formed from the combination of word vectors, are in the same multi-dimensional space as the word vectors. A singular value decomposition is used to reduce the dimensionality of the document vectors. A query vector is formed from the combination of word vectors associated with the words in the query. The query vector and document vectors are compared to determine the relevant documents. The query vector can be divided into several factor clusters to form factor vectors. The factor vectors are then compared to the document vectors to determine the ranking of the documents within the factor cluster.
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for detecting sheet misfeed from a multi-tray sheet feeder. The thickness of the first sheet fed from each tray is detected by a common sensor and a thickness value is placed in memory for that tray. Each sheet subsequently fed from the same tray is detected by the common sensor and the thickness value sensed is compared with the thickness value in memory for that tray. If the values match, then only one sheet has been fed from the tray. If the thickness value is more that the thickness value in memory for that tray, then that indicates that more than one sheet has left the tray and the system is shut down to enable an operator to correct the situation. When a tray is reloaded, the thickness value in memory for the sheets previously loaded in the tray is erased and the first sheet fed from the reloaded tray is sensed and a thickness value for that sheet is placed in memory for the reloaded tray.

Abstract: A method of fast decompressing a document image compressed using transform coding for scaling and previewing purposes. A fast algorithm is derived by utilizing a fraction of all available transform coefficients representing the image. The method is particularly efficient using the discrete cosine transform which is used in the JPEG ADCT algorithm. In JPEG ADCT, a very fast and efficient implementation is derived for a resolution reduction factor of 16 to 1 (4 to 1 in each direction) without needing any floating point arithmetic operations.
