  • Patent number: 5659836
Abstract: A predetermined sheet retaining plane C for absorbing a record sheet is provided in the circumferential surface of a sheet carrier, and a low-reflectivity area which is to be partially covered with the record sheet is provided at a leading portion of the sheet retaining plane C. Reflection photosensors for detecting the reflectivity of the sheet carrier including the low-reflectivity area are disposed around the sheet carrier. Whether a record sheet is held in the sheet retaining plane C is judged on the basis of detection signals of the photosensors.

  • Patent number: 5659639
Abstract: Input image data define an input image set that shows a graphical feature and editing marks indicating an editing operation to be performed on the graphical feature. The input image data are used to obtain operation category data indicating whether the editing operation would translate the graphical feature so that it is centered at a different position within the input image set. The operation category data are used to obtain output image data defining an output image that includes an edited version of the input image set. The output image shows the graphical feature centered at a different position only if the operation category data so indicate. The input image set can include an original image showing the graphical feature and an overlay image showing the editing marks. The editing marks can form a node-link structure with the graphical feature.

  • Patent number: 5659330
Abstract: An electrocapillary color display sheet is disclosed which utilizes a plurality of sets of different color droplets between two sheets in which each set of droplets will create a pixel of an image. Each set of droplets has at least two droplets in which each droplet has a different color. On one of the sheets there is a first type electrode for each set of droplets. Each first type electrode has at least two holes and each hole holds one second type electrode. Each second type electrode corresponds to one droplet of the corresponding set of droplets. There is also an addressable electrical connection to each droplet. By selectively activating droplets of each set of droplets and its corresponding first type electrode and second type electrode, at least one of the droplets of the set will expand in a space commonly shared by the droplets of each set to create a colored pixel.

  • Patent number: 5659849
Abstract: A method and apparatus for eliminating the accumulation of triboelectric negative toner that occurs between the cleaning edge of the cleaning blade and the photoreceptor surface. After image transfer, the residual toner particles on the photoreceptor surface are then charged to a uniform polarity using either a preclean corotron or a biased conductive blade. A UCA is used to dislodge the residual toner particles away from the photoreceptor surface. The polarity of the particles is opposite to that of the collection roll positioned to attract the toner particles levitated by the UCA onto the collection roll.

  • Patent number: 5659766
Abstract: An iterative method of determining the topical content of a document using a computer. The processing unit of the computer determines the topical content of documents presented to it in machine readable form using information stored in computer memory. That information includes word-clusters, a lexicon, and association strength values. The processing unit beings by generating an observed feature vector for the document being characterized, which indicates which of the words of the lexicon appear in the document. Afterward, the processing unit makes an initial prediction of the topical content of the document in the form of a topic belief vector. The processing unit uses the topic belief vector and the association strength values to predict which words of the lexicon should appear in the document. This prediction is represented via a predicted feature vector.

  • Patent number: 5659662
Abstract: A system and method for unsupervised clustering of audio data segments in an audio data recording containing speech from multiple speakers including the steps of: 1) providing a portion of the audio data containing speech from all of the speakers; 2) forming initial clusters by dividing the portion of the audio data into segments, each of which includes an ordered data set; 3) computing the pairwise distance between each pair of clusters using a likelihood ration independent of the order of data within the segments; and 4) combining into a new cluster the two clusters with a minimum pairwise distance. These steps are repeated until a number of clusters equal to the number of speakers is obtained.

  • Patent number: 5659414
Abstract: The present invention provides a means and method for efficiently and automatically monitoring and adjusting the power output of either a single or a dual beam laser diode array used to provide the scanning beams in a ROS system. Collimated light outputs from a collimator lens assembly following either a single or dual beam laser are reflected along an optical path to impinge on one or two photodiodes positioned so as to intercept the reflected light. The photodiode output is proportional to the power output of the laser diode associated with the photodiode. In one multi-beam embodiment, polarization of the laser diode output is controlled so as to ensure that only outputs from an associated laser diode is sensed by an associated photodiode. In another embodiment, a half wave plate is used to rotate the polarization of one of the laser diodes.
