Abstract: A method and system for providing assistance to a user within a store is disclosed. A communication event between a mobile device of the user and a store item is detected. A database which includes data indicative of a position of the store item within the store is accessed. Based on information from the database, a position of the user within the store is estimated and information, based at least on part of the estimated position, is provided to the user. The information may be provided to the use via the mobile device and may include promotional materials.

Abstract: System(s) and method(s) are provided for content management, e.g., exchange and manipulation, across devices provisioned through disparate network platforms. Devices can be mobile or stationary, and connect to provisioning network platforms through various network bearers. Through various secure protocols, a client component within a device secures access to content and provides secure delivery thereof Directives for content manipulation are also delivered securely. Delivery of contents and directives are performed from device to device, routed via gateway nodes within a network platform that provisions the device. In addition, or alternatively, content management can be implemented through an intermediary component, which can also validate devices and secure delivery of content or directives. Alarm signaling among devices provisioned through disparate network platforms also can be securely conveyed.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing critical information to a user of a content providing service based on profile data associated with the user are disclosed. Such systems and methods can include storing a user profile that identifies a plurality of communication pathways via which a critical information alert can be provided to a user associated with the user profile. The critical information alert contains critical information provided by the content providing service. The user profile includes a respective set of decision criteria associated with each of the plurality of communication pathways. A satisfied set of decision criteria is identified from among the respective sets of decision criteria. The critical information alert is provided to the user via the communication pathway associated with the satisfied set of decision criteria.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for presenting speech from a selected text that is on a computing device. This method includes presenting text on a touch-sensitive display and having that text size within a threshold level so that the computing device can accurately determine the intent of the user when the user touches the touch screen. Once the user touch has been received, the computing device identifies and interprets the portion of text that is to be selected, and subsequently presents the text audibly to the user.

Abstract: A method of modifying a configuration setting of a portable communication device based on an estimated change in transmission traffic. The method includes monitoring radio frequency (RF) signals at a first portable communication device. The RF signals include signals communicated by one or more other communication devices. The method further includes measuring a first number of transmissions communicated by the RF signals during a first time window and measuring a second number of transmissions communicated by the RF signals during a second time window. The first number of transmissions is compared to the second number of transmissions to estimate a change in transmission traffic. A configuration setting of the first portable communication device is modified from a first setting to a second setting based on the estimated change in transmission traffic.

Abstract: A method of delivering a call to a called party's device. The method includes receiving a call directed to a wireline device and validating that a telephone number of the wireline device is associated with a telephone number of a wireless device. The method also includes transmitting a message to the wireless device, delivering the call to the wireline device when a return message is not received from the wireless device, and determining a location of the wireless device when a return message is received from the wireless device. The method further includes comparing the location of the wireless device with a location of the wireline device, delivering the call to the wireless device when the location of the wireless device is not within a predefined vicinity of the location of the wireline device, and delivering the call to the wireline device when the location of the wireless device is within a predefined vicinity of the location of the wireline device.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and computer readable-media for creating a virtual shopping area. The method includes receiving a query from a user and an automated input specific to the user from a computing device, generating a list of merchants based on the query and the automated input, generating a virtual shopping area from the list of merchants and based on one or more constraints, and displaying the virtual shopping area on the computing device. One optional step is presenting to the user an interface to purchase query-related items from merchants in the virtual shopping area. The method optionally includes receiving an indication of intent to purchase an item from the user, displaying an image of the item to the user, and dynamically updating the displayed image of the item as the user specifies item-specific details. The list of merchants can be restricted to merchants geographically close to the user.

Abstract: A method and apparatus prioritizing video information during coding and decoding. Video information is received and an element of the video information, such as a visual object, video object layer, video object plane or keyregion, is identified. A priority is assigned to the identified element and the video information is encoded into a bitstream, such as a visual bitstream encoded using the MPEG-4 standard, including an indication of the priority of the element.

Abstract: A system and method provide a telecommunications extension service for a subscriber. The system allows a subscriber to identify one or more telecommunications units to serve as extensions of one of the subscriber's telecommunications units when a call is directed to the subscriber's telecommunications unit. A list of numbers associated with telecommunications units to serve as extensions is maintained by the subscriber and may be stored at a service control point. Upon receipt of a call directed to the subscriber's telecommunications unit, ringing is provided to the subscriber's telecommunications unit and the telecommunications units serving as extensions. After the call is answered by the first telecommunications unit to be answered, the remaining telecommunications units can join the in-progress call.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and computer readable-media for creating a speech search platform for coupons. The method includes receiving coupons from vendors, generating indexing information about the received coupons for use with speech searches, integrating the received coupons and respective indexing information into a database accessible through a Representational State Transfer (REST) Application Programming Interface (API) as part of a speech search platform for coupons, receiving from a user a natural language query through the speech search platform for coupons, identifying coupons in the database which match the natural language query based on location and a user profile, and transmitting the identified coupons to the user. The method can further include modifying the REST API to include coupon-specific parameters. Identified coupons can be transmitted to the consumer by notifying a coupon issuer that the user is entitled to a discount.

Abstract: System(s) and method(s) are provided for registration of non-mobile devices with a mobile network platform for secure content transactions among the mobile network platform and registered non-mobile devices, and mobile and registered non-mobile devices. Through various secure protocols, a registration component within the mobile network platform records non-mobile devices provisioned through a non-mobile network platform. Recordation includes validation of devices associated with the non-mobile devices and retention of devices records. Content transaction(s), e.g., content delivery and exchange, are conducted securely, and abide by license terms for content dissemination. Content transaction(s) can be billed based at least in part on license terms, or subscriber intelligence. Transacted content can be received and formatted by a master non-mobile within a network of provisioned non-mobile devices.

Abstract: A system and method for allowing legacy circuit switched user equipment (CS UE) to operate via a packet-switch system, such as an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) system, is provided. The mobility and session control aspects of communications with a legacy CS UE is separated. A user agent is placed in the receiving node (e.g., a home node B) that acts as the SIP agent for the CS UE for session control. An interworking function is provided to allow mobility between the macro CS network and the PS (e.g., IMS) network.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and system for composing a package of application files to be sent as e-mail attachments in e-mail communications. A plurality of data structures are created, wherein each data structure groups together a plurality of different user application files designated as attachments to an e-mail communication. Application files designated from within user applications are associated with selected data structures, such that each designated application file is associated with a selected data structure. During composition of an e-mail communication having attachments, a list of the data structures containing application files are provided.

Abstract: A method and system of facilitating shopping within a store enables detection of a wireless device in proximity to a store, identification of items in an electronic shopping list (ESL) resident in the wireless device, and the provision of guided shopping information to the wireless device by accessing item location data so as to facilitate navigation of the store to locate the ESL items. The items in the ESL may be sorted based on the item location data and the sorted ESL may be provided to the wireless device. An image of a layout of the store may be provided to the wireless device. Text based directions for navigating the store to locate items in the ESL may be provided to the wireless device.

The PFC user interface enables the user to create a project and define and modify a membership for the project. The user interface also enables the user to perform, within the confines of the user interface, varied project activities including remotely or locally accessing asynchronous communication objects pertaining to the project, accessing documents and other media objects associated with the project, and initiating synchronous and asynchronous communications with members of the project.

Abstract: Providing transport protocol within a communication network having a lossy link. The receiver distinguishes between packets received with non-congestion bit errors and packets having been not at all received due to congestion. When packets are received with non-congestion bit errors, the receiver sends selective acknowledgments indicating that the packets were received with bit errors while suppressing duplicate acknowledgments to prevent the invocation of a congestion mechanism.

Abstract: Disclosed systems and methods present a graphics based electronic programming guide (EPG) that organizes available content in radial fashion on a display. Which content appears on a screen shot of the EPG may be determined using rating data, user preferences or collaborative filtering. Through collaborative filtering, disclosed embodiments may predict which programs a user may like according to group member ratings. Some disclosed EPGs include a mosaic with graphical indications of an overall rating and graphical indications of which of a plurality of characteristics (e.g., genres) apply to multimedia programs.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for accessing media with a portable communication device presents media available for display to a user based on user preferences. A user can select media to be output from an external display by entering commands into the portable communications device. In addition, a second external display can be used to display a subset of the media available for display.

Abstract: A method of encapsulating data packets for use in a distributed computer network is disclosed. The method includes providing a data packet for transmission over the distributed computer network, the data packet selected from one of a customer data packet and an OAM data packet; and encapsulating the data packet with a medium access control outer packet. The disclosed data packet handling method includes receiving a data packet from a customer facing data port, the customer facing data port within a network node of a computer network; performing medium access control (MAC) learning for the received packet; determining whether the data port is a MAC-in-MAC port; performing a packet mapping to a destination address based on a service provider destination address; and encapsulating the received data packet with a header associated with the service provider.

Time data is stored with the responses and compared to responses from other viewers at the same time in the multimedia program. A viewer type is determined based on the responses. Further multimedia programs may be offered to the viewer based on the viewer type. Transducers and sensors placed within a viewing area may include, without limitation, audio sensors, video sensors, motion sensors, subdermal sensors, and biometric sensors.

A method includes storing an access number at a service control server that services a local exchange carrier switch. The method also includes assigning a toll-free number to a customer account and distributing the toll-free number and access number to the corresponding customer. The method further includes receiving, at the local exchange carrier switch, a call from a customer, the call identified as the access number. The method also includes routing the call to a server and, absent human intervention, the server accessing the toll-free number identified for the customer account and generating a provisioning order that includes a customer telephone number from the customer account and the toll-free number. The method also includes transmitting the provisioning order to the service control server, the service control server activating the toll-free number for the customer account.

In a particular embodiment, a method is disclosed that includes receiving a media stream and associating moderator controls with the media stream to create an interactive media session. The interactive media session enables multiple remote users to interact with one another with respect to the media stream. The moderator controls enable a moderator to facilitate the interaction of the multiple remote users. The method also includes sending display data to display devices of the multiple remote users. The display data is based on moderator control input received via the moderator controls, interactive input received from the multiple remote users, and the received media stream.

Abstract: A method and system for identifying telemarketer communications directed to a subscriber of a call screening service is provided. A link monitoring system monitors all inbound and outbound calls of a carrier network collecting data such as calling and called telephone directory numbers, and a termination status for at least each inbound call to a calling number. The data is analyzed at a telemarketer detection module to determine calling patterns of calling numbers. If a calling pattern of a calling telephone number matches a profile of telemarketer communications, the calling number is stored in a database of telephone directory numbers associated with telemarketer communications. A call is received from a calling party directed to a subscriber of the call screening service. Then a determination is made as to whether a telephone directory number of the calling party is known.

Information tracking items on the ESL versus items that are purchased by the end user may be maintained to develop a likelihood of purchase factor for the end user. The tracking information may also be used to predict future inventory needs and/or adjust inventory levels.

Abstract: A method and system of updating an electronic shopping list (ESL) indicating items that may be purchased in response to detecting, by a wireless device having access to the ESL, a service request event corresponding to an asset. Upon detection of the service request event, a service request item may be inserted into the ESL. The asset may be queried from time to time to verify operation of the asset. The items listed in the ESL may be ordered according to a date the service request event was detected.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and computer-readable medium for bit and power allocation for modems sharing a common multi-carrier binder, including Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) based Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modems. In one preferred embodiment, the method includes the steps of initializing a modem by calculating loop-to-loop channel transfer functions and noise power spectral densities (PSDs) at a corresponding receiver, and taking into account cross-talk between loops in the process of allocation so as to maximize total data rates within the binder.

Abstract: A method for collaborative sketch annotating of a program of multimedia content includes enabling a first user to create a sketch annotation, enabling the first user to store sketch annotation data related to the sketch annotation, and enabling a second user to access the sketch annotation. The second user may navigate the program using the sketch annotation and/or an indication of the sketch annotation. The first user may create the sketch annotation while viewing the program, for example, and the program may be paused for adding the sketch annotation to one or more paused frames. The sketch annotations may include chronological information indicative of a chronological location of the sketch annotation within the program.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for integrating billing and services management systems across disparate telecommunications systems including wireless systems and local and long distance wireline systems. Wireless and wireline services may be charged to and billed under one periodic billing. A rollover management system is employed for managing units of call usage that may be “rolled over” from a present usage period to a subsequent usage period. An integrated services settlement system is provided which is operable for apportioning revenue associated with utilization of the wireless carrier's services to the wireless carrier and for apportioning revenue associated with the wireline carrier's services to the wireline carrier. An integrated telecommunications services ordering system is provided that is operable to synchronize subscriber orders between the subscriber's wireless and wireline carriers.

Abstract: Systems and methods of avatar configuration based on a media stream context are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, a method is disclosed that includes determining context information related to a portion of a media stream. The method also includes selecting configuration settings of an avatar based at least partially on the context information. The avatar is responsive to user input to enable interaction with one or more other users with respect to the media stream. The method further includes sending display data to a user device. The display data includes information to display the avatar with the portion of the media stream.

Abstract: Systems and methods of media stream generation based on categories of user expression are disclosed. In an embodiment, a method includes receiving input selecting at least one category from a plurality of categories of expression. Each of the plurality of categories is descriptive of a type of expression made by users as media content is presented. The method includes selecting a group of segments of the media content. Each of the segments of media content in the group is associated with the selected category. The method further includes generating a stream of media content that includes each of the segments of media content.

Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed providing the automatic, self configuration of a communication device to adjust to the user's environmental circumstances. Method includes creating a set of mode templates corresponding to a plurality of potential environmental circumstances and may be stored in a database in the computer readable memory of the communication device. At predetermined intervals, a suite of environmental sensors integral to the communication device may periodically sample the user's environment. The user's environmental circumstances may be derived by an analysis module based on the output of the suite of environmental sensors. The derived set of environmental circumstances may then be compared to the mode templates to determine a matching mode template. A change to a plurality of communication device operational settings may then be made based at least partially on the matching mode template.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for increasing the capability of a network topology model having a plurality of nodes connected by existing links to maintain service continuity in the presence of faults. The steps of the method include adding new links to the network topology model to protect against single node failures, and adjusting link weights for the network topology model to reduce at least one of a cost of network operation and an imbalance in link utilizations. Preferably, the link weights are adjusted to reduce the imbalance in link utilizations without deteriorating the cost of network operation. Abstract: A system, method and software are described for facilitating transitions between speech-enabled applications employing action-object matrices. In an exemplary embodiment, an automatic call router determines a service agent destination by identifying an action-object combination included in a user utterance. In addition to forwarding the user to the service agent destination, the automatic call router sends one or more aspects of the user utterance to the service agent for use therewith. The service agent may then use aspects of the forwarded information to request further information from the user or to begin performance of a user desired transaction.

Abstract: A method and system for allowing a calling party to save information obtained from an information retrieval system. The caller may select options to save the information to a memory location, e.g., the caller's own network-based voice mail system or a temporary voice mailbox provided for the caller by the information provider, from which the caller can subsequently retrieve and review the information. The information may be saved to an Internet-based website from which the caller may subsequently retrieve the information. The information may be forwarded to a separate telephone directory number for receipt by a third person or for storing on a remote voice mail system. Additionally, the information may be electronically mailed to the caller's electronic mail address for subsequent retrieval. Discussions with a live attendant may be recorded and stored, as audio files or as converted to text, for access by or delivery to the caller.
