Abstract: An apparatus and method of transmission control for an audio device. The audio device uses sources other than the microphone to determine nuisance, and uses this to calculate a gain as well as to make the transmit decision. Using the gain results in a more nuanced nuisance mitigation than using the transmit decision on its own.

  • Publication number: 20210233548
Abstract: The processing of audio signals during playback is provided, so that audio signals that fall below a specified threshold loudness level are processed to avoid making unwanted background noise audible. N-channel audio is received from a playback volume controller/leveler (101). The level of the audio is compared with a threshold level. If the level is greater than the threshold level, the audio is processed with a first amount of gain in accordance with a first dynamic range control (DRC) compression curve that is tuned for professionally produced audio. If the level is less than or equal to the threshold level, the audio is processed with a second amount of gain in accordance with a second DRC compression curve that is designed to avoid boosting unwanted background noise. After applying the gain to the audio, the audio is sent to a downstream device.

  • Publication number: 20210218938
Abstract: A novel projection system includes first and second light sources (e.g., sets of lasers), a spatial light modulator (SLM) that receives light from the first light source, and a beam steering device that receives light from the second light source and steers the light to highlight regions of the SLM. The SLM then modulates the light from both light sources to generate a highlighted imaging beam which can then be projected on a viewing surface. The highlighted imaging beam can represent a highlighted 2D image or a highlighted left- or right-eye view of a 3D image. The projection system thus improves peak brightness in the displayed highlighted images without incorporating a separate highlight projector or other expensive equipment. Methods for highlighting projected images are also described.

  • Publication number: 20210219083
Abstract: An audio object including audio content and object metadata is received. The object metadata indicates an object spatial position of the audio object to be rendered by audio speakers in a playback environment. Based on the object spatial position and source spatial positions of the audio speakers, initial gain values for the audio speakers are determined. The initial gain values can be used to select a set of audio speakers from among the audio speakers. Based on the object spatial position and a set of source spatial positions at which the set of audio speakers are respectively located in the playback environment, a set of non-negative optimized gain values for the set of audio speakers is determined. The audio object at the object spatial position is rendered with the set of optimized gain values for the set of audio speakers.

Abstract: A method, an apparatus, and logic to post-process raw gains determined by input processing to generate post-processed gains, comprising using one or both of delta gain smoothing and decision-directed gain smoothing. The delta gain smoothing comprises applying a smoothing filter to the raw gain with a smoothing factor that depends on the gain delta: the absolute value of the difference between the raw gain for the current frame and the post-processed gain for a previous frame. The decision-directed gain smoothing comprises converting the raw gain to a signal-to-noise ratio, applying a smoothing filter with a smoothing factor to the signal-to-noise ratio to calculate a smoothed signal-to-noise ratio, and converting the smoothed signal-to-noise ratio to determine the second smoothed gain, with smoothing factor possibly dependent on the gain delta.

  • Publication number: 20210217425
Abstract: The present invention provides improvements to prior art audio codecs that generate a stereo-illusion through post-processing of a received mono signal. These improvements are accomplished by extraction of stereo-image describing parameters at the encoder side, which are transmitted and subsequently used for control of a stereo generator at the decoder side. Furthermore, the invention bridges the gap between simple pseudo-stereo methods, and current methods of true stereo-coding, by using a new form of parametric stereo coding. A stereo-balance parameter is introduced, which enables more advanced stereo modes, and in addition forms the basis of a new method of stereo-coding of spectral envelopes, of particular use in systems where guided HFR (High Frequency Reconstruction) is employed. As a special case, the application of this stereo-coding scheme in scalable HFR-based codecs is described.

  • Publication number: 20210219091
Abstract: Embodiments are described for an adaptive audio system that processes audio data comprising a number of independent monophonic audio streams. One or more of the streams has associated with it metadata that specifies whether the stream is a channel-based or object-based stream. Channel-based streams have rendering information encoded by means of channel name; and the object-based streams have location information encoded through location expressions encoded in the associated metadata. A codec packages the independent audio streams into a single serial bitstream that contains all of the audio data. This configuration allows for the sound to be rendered according to an allocentric frame of reference, in which the rendering location of a sound is based on the characteristics of the playback environment (e.g., room size, shape, etc.) to correspond to the mixer's intent.

Abstract: An apparatus and method of generating personalized HRTFs. The system is prepared by calculating a model for HRTFs described as the relationship between a finite example set of input data, namely anthropometric measures and demographic information for a set of individuals, and a corresponding set of output data, namely HRTFs numerically simulated using a high-resolution database of 3D scans of the same set of individuals. At the time of use, the system queries the user for their demographic information, and then from a series of images of the user, the system detects and measures various anthropometric characteristics. The system then applies the prepared model to the anthropometric and demographic data as part of generating a personalized HRTF. In this manner, the personalized HRTF can be generated with more convenience than by performing a high-resolution scan or an acoustic measurement of the user, and with less computational complexity than by numerically simulating their HRTF.

Abstract: The quantization parameter QP is well-known in digital video compression as an indication of picture quality. Digital symbols representing a moving image are quantized with a quantizing step that is a function QSN of the quantization parameter QP, which function QSN has been normalized to the most significant bit of the bit depth of the digital symbols. As a result, the effect of a given QP is essentially independent of bit depth a particular QP value has a standard effect on image quality, regardless of bit depth. The invention is useful, for example, in encoding and decoding at different bit depths, to generate compatible, bitstreams having different bit depths, and to allow different bit depths for different components of a video signal by compressing each with the same fidelity (i.e., the same QP).

The gain values are transferred in a differential manner as side information. However, for starting decoding of such streamed compressed HOA data frame representation absolute gain values are required, which should be coded with a minimum number of bits. Abstract: Smaller halftone tiles are implemented on a first modulator of a dual modulation projection system. This technique uses multiple halftones per frame in the pre-modulator synchronized with a modified bit sequence in the primary modulator to effectively increase the number of levels provided by a given tile size in the halftone modulator. It addresses the issue of reduced contrast ratio at low light levels for small tile sizes and allows the use of smaller PSFs which reduce halo artifacts in the projected image and may be utilized in 3D projecting and viewing.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for synchronizing audio signals captured by multiple independent devices during an audio event are described. Multiple recording devices, e.g. several smartphones, record the audio event. A computer system receives audio signals from the devices. The system determines a first delay between two audio signals based on cross-correlation of waveforms of the two audio signals. Subsequently, the system detects attacks that are present in each audio signal by computing the derivative of a respective envelope for each audio signal. The system determines a second delay between the two audio signals based on cross-correlation of attacks of the two audio signals. The system synchronizes the audio signals using the second delay upon determining that using the second delay improves sound quality over using the first delay.
