  • Patent number: 3968702
Abstract: A variable diameter pulley including a pair of pulley flanges axially displaceable one relative to the other along a shaft, centrifugally responsive weights acting on one flange to cause axial displacement thereof, a pusher ring interposed between the actuating weights and the axially displaceable flange, a centrifugal weight carrier transmitting the rotation of the shaft to the axially displaceable pulley flange. This variable diameter pulley is characterized by driving the displaceable flange through follower blocks and guideways at the periphery of the displaceable flange and the centrifugal weight carrier rather than spline connection to the shaft for reduced angular vibration, noise and wear. There are two sets of guideways and the blocks can engage one or the other of these two sets but not both simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 3967509
Abstract: A variable speed secondary pulley includes a first pulley half and an abutment member connected together and mounted for rotation on and axial movement along a sleeve at axially spaced locations at the opposite sides of a second pulley half immovably fixed to the sleeve. The second pulley half includes a hub provided with axially inclined cam surfaces which are engaged with complementary surfaces provided on a hub of the abutment member. A compression spring is coxially mounted on the sleeve and is compressed between the second pulley half and the abutment member so as to urge the pulley halves toward each other while the cam surfaces serve as a torque responsive means which develops decreasing axial forces in response to decreasing driven shaft torque to effect increasing separation of the pulley halves. Means are provided for manually adjusting the preset torsional load in the spring without dismantling the pulley.

  • Patent number: 3965763
Abstract: A ten-speed bicycle gear shift includes front and rear derailleurs actuated by a single continuous cable. Movement of the cable through a discrete given distance in one direction increases the gear ratio and movement of the cable through the same discrete given distance in an opposite direction decreases the gear ratio. A rotatable dial is mounted on the handlebar of the bicycle for easy manual turning and includes a cable drum such that turning the dial in one direction through a given circumferential distance moves the cable through the referred to given distance in one direction and turning of the dial in an opposite direction through the same given circumferential distance moves the cable through the given distance in an opposite direction. Gear numbers and a viewing window are included in the dial structure so that the particular gear position can be visually observed.

  • Patent number: 3964327
Abstract: In a vehicle or the like, a source of power is connected to a drive shaft. Two pairs of pulley halves are splined to this shaft and can be moved apart and together and are rotated by the shaft. Driven shafts also carry pairs of pulley halves which are splined thereto and can be moved therealong and belts extend between corresponding pulley halves on the drive shaft and corresponding pulley halves on the driven shafts. A pair of spur gears are journalled for partial rotation and mesh with one another, there being one pair for each two sets of pulley halves and a third drive gear engages between the innermost gears of said spur gears so that movement of this drive gear causes equal and simultaneous rotation of the spur gears. Levers are secured to the spur gears and are operatively connected to the pulley halves so that when the drive gear is rotated, one of the sets of pulley halves are moved apart on one of the shafts whereas the other set are moved together by equal amount and vice versa.

  • Patent number: 3964324
Abstract: A friction roller for rotating twist tubes in twisting apparatus in which the friction ring is protected from contact with ambient oil by means of a protective coating and a slinger edge disposed on at least one side of the friction ring. The protective layer may be a protective ring which may be integral with the roller or it may be a protective layer of lacquer applied to the friction ring. The layer protects the friction ring from the spinning oil and the slinger edge acts to fling off by centrifugal force that oil which collects around the periphery of the friction roller so that the running surface of the friction ring remains unaffected. In one embodiment the slinger edge projects radially beyond the running surface of the friction ring and there is a peripheral groove on the associated twist tube which cooperates with the slinger edge in the manner of a labyrinth seal, which increases the protection against adverse influences from the spinning oil.

  • Patent number: 3961702
Abstract: A conveyor flight is connected to a roller link conveyor chain by a pair of spaced pins which project transversely from the chain. The pins are removably supported in transverse sleeves of the chain and have end portions which are removably received in spaced parallel bores in the end of the flight, with grooved portions which project into opposite sides of a transverse opening in the flight. A latch member on the flight has a portion projecting into the transverse opening, and said latch portion is dimensioned to releasably engage the exposed grooves in both pins to releasably latch the flight to the pins. The opposite sides of the latch portion are notched adjacent to the grooves in the pins, and the notched portions are positioned to be moved into alignment with the pins, when the latch member is manually depressed, to release the pins so that the flight can be quickly detached.

  • Patent number: 3961538
Abstract: An adjustable pulley of the split-sheave type is formed of stamped sheet metal and is retained assembled by a Belleville spring engaging deformations on one sheave part and a tang struck from the other sheave part. One sheave part has a plurality of cam seats facing a mating portion on the other sheave part, the latter having a plurality of cam surfaces of varying heights thereon. The cam surfaces are deformed areas projecting a predetermined distance toward the cam seats. Rotation of one sheave part to position particular cam surfaces upon the cam seats places the sheaves a predetermined axial distance apart establishing a predetermined effective belt groove width permitting use of various belts.

  • Patent number: 3961539
Abstract: In a rotary clutch for a snowmobile comprising a movable pulley flange which carries pivotally mounted flyweights operable on rotation of the clutch to effect axial displacement of the movable flange towards a fixed pulley flange, the pivot shafts for the flyweights have previously been retained in mounting lugs on the movable flange by cotter pins or the like. Improper maintenance of such clutches has on occasion led to unorthodox methods of retaining the pivot shafts, such as the use of wire instead of cotter pins, or the replacement of the pivot shaft by a nut and bolt thereby causing severe unbalance in the clutch. To obviate this problem, the pivot shafts are now designed to be retained solely by abutment means formed integrally with the bell housing which attaches to the rear side of the movable flange.

  • Patent number: 3960025
Abstract: Push flange construction of a pivotal roller system of a speed change mechanism for a bicycle, the pivotal roller system having a pair of spaced flanges with at least one rotatable sprocket mounted therebetween on which a chain passes and is wound on a pinion of a gear cluster on the hub of the rear wheel of the bicycle. One of the flanges is a push flange operative to push the chain onto the pinions in the course of speed change when the roller system is transversely displaced, this flange including a peripheral prolongation at that extremity of the flange closest to the pinions of the gear cluster. The prolongation extends over a wide sector whose angular length is such as to allow contact with the chain and pushing thereof at a position closest to the pinions whatever the angular position of the roller system. The surface of the prolongation facing the chain is provided along the length of the sector with a wide profiled chamfer for contacting the chain.
