  • Patent number: 3954018
Abstract: A pulley drive system utilizes a driven pulley and a driving pulley and a belt connecting the pulleys. The driving pulley has spaced discs and there are means for varying the spacing between the discs to vary the speed of the belt driving the driven pulley. Speed sensing means are positioned adjacent the driven pulley to provide a signal representative of the speed of the driven pulley. The speed sensing signal is utilized in a regulating circuit to control the means for varying the spacing between the discs to thus control the speed of the belt.

  • Patent number: 3945270
Abstract: A rotary motion transmitting device including traction rollers for transmitting motion in either direction from an input shaft to an output shaft. One shaft carries an internal traction ring and the other shaft, whose axis is parallel to, but slightly spaced from, the traction ring shaft, extends into the traction ring and carries an inner roller to form a varying annular space. Three intermediate traction rollers are angularly disposed within this annular space and are urged into firm Hertzian contact with both the traction ring and the inner roller by means of the torque transmitted through the device. The five traction rollers have a sum of degrees of freedom of movement in a plane perpendicular to the axes of the rollers equal to 8, 9 or 10.

  • Patent number: 3945755
Abstract: An apparatus for transmitting torque to a load includes a pair of pulleys vertically spaced apart by a great distance for movably mounting a long endless belt in a substantially vertical disposition to move it freely in a closed loop path, a plurality of spaced-apart arm devices connected to and extending from the belt, and a plurality of weights adapted to be carried by the arm devices. The weights and the arm devices are arranged in pairs, and each one of the pairs provides a larger moment acting through the belt on at least one of the pulleys when falling vertically downwardly under the force of gravity and alternately provides a relatively smaller opposing moment acting through the belt on at least one of the pulleys when being pulled vertically upwardly by the belt, whereby torque may be transmitted from at least one of the pulleys for driving the load.

  • Patent number: 3943785
Abstract: A drive system comprising a prime mover such as an engine providing a drive shaft, a shell supported by the shaft for rotation relative to the shaft, a split groove pulley mounted on the shaft, the pulley including one flange secured to the shaft for rotation therewith and a complementary flange connected to the shell for rotation therewith, the flanges defining a space axially therebetween, an adjustably movable take-up pulley having a belt-tightening position and a belt-loosening position, and a belt trained about the pulleys. When the belt is tightened by the take-up pulley, the shell and complementary flange rotate with the shaft and the said one flange, i.e., the belt provides a driving connection between the two flanges. When the belt is loosened, the driving connection is broken such that the one flange and shaft rotate relative to the complementary flange and the shell.
