Patent number: 12727953Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods relate to a guidewire slack take-up module (STUM) that engages a guidewire, by a retractor module (RM), to displace the guidewire in a proximal direction (D1) in response to a tensioning command signal (TCS) and maintains a predetermined biasing force (PBF) in D1 when the RM is not engaged. In an illustrative example, the STUM may include a connection module (CM) disposed at a proximal end of a control member (CM). The CM may have its distal end fixedly attached to a distal end of a flexible shaft. The RM may, in response to the TCS, engage the CM to displace the proximal end of the CM in D1. A biasing member may apply the PBF to the CM in D1 when the RM is not engaging the CM. Various embodiments may advantageously reduce or eliminate slack in a guidewire of a steerable catheter.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2021Date of Patent: September 8, 2026Assignee: NEXTERN INNOVATION, LLCInventors: John Pocrnich, Steve Gigl, John Swoyer

Patent number: 12667301Abstract: Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurement approach is presented that achieves accurate and continuous monitoring completely independent of ambient environmental variations. This new measurement approach uses short dry air purges to dry the skin surface and the water vapor collection chamber, thus refreshing the measurement site each time during skin barrier analysis. These dry air purges help maintain a highly controlled localized measuring environment without disturbing any inherent skin properties, enabling one to produce reproducible TEWL results. A mathematical model developed based on Fick's laws of diffusion is presented, and shown to have excellent agreement with the mathematical model of a commercial TEWL device. The application of this mathematical model in deciphering the TEWL values from the transient microclimate behavior in the vapor measuring chamber of the new TEWL approach is also discussed.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2024Date of Patent: June 30, 2026Assignee: The Regents of The University of MichiganInventors: Xudong Fan, Anjali Devi Sivakumar

Patent number: 12629497Abstract: An intravascular safety guidewire including an elongated main shaft, a distal terminus extending from the elongated main shaft, and an anchor rotatably connected to the distal terminus. In use, a needle is inserted into a patient's vein, then the intravascular safety guidewire is placed through the needle and into the vein, the needle is then removed over the intravascular safety guidewire, then a venous catheter is exchanged over the intravascular safety guidewire following serial dilatation using the Seldinger technique. Tubes such as dilators and catheters can then be placed over the intravascular safety guidewire and the intravascular safety guidewire ultimately removed. Currently complications can arise if a guidewire becomes retained inside a patient during an endovascular procedure, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. The instant intravascular safety guidewire with its rotatable anchor reduces the likelihood of this complication.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 2024Date of Patent: May 19, 2026Inventor: Eric J. Gandras
