Abstract: A sterile dual-purpose closed intermittent urinary catheter system that may be used as either a drain line or a collection bag. A catheter resides within an inner cavity of an extensible sheath and may be extracted from a forward end through an outlet hub for insertion into the urethra. A valve at a rearward end of the sheath may be opened to permit the sheath to function as a drain line, or closed to permit the sheath to function as a collection bag. The sheath has an extended length substantially longer than the catheter length, and may be compressed in an accordion fashion or folded to a compact packaged shape. The urine may be collected in the sheath with the valve closed, or drained straight into a toilet with the valve open. The system may have a source of lubrication to wet the catheter.
Abstract: The present invention provides a device and method for preventing or curing pressure ulcers or chronic wounds. A multilayer dressing comprises a soft silicone jell layer of a suitable thickness which is placed in the multilayer dressing, above an absorbent layer. The matrix of the silicone jell layer is populated with a plurality of silicone beads of suitable size. The beads are connected to each other, and to the silicone jell layer. Breathing of wound and substantial supply of oxygen to the wound is duly insured for all layers of the multiple layer dressing. The beads play a pivotal role in promoting the effectiveness and performance of the multilayer dressing by acting as the plurality of effective cushions, as they absorb and uniformly redistribute a patient's body weight across the entire applied dressing area. The low adhering adhesive coating of about 5 mm in width is applied to the peripheral edges of all the layers.
Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling a pump system for use in negative pressure wound therapy are described herein. In some embodiments, a method for controlling a pump system includes applying a drive signal to a pump assembly of the pump system, the drive signal alternating between a positive amplitude and a negative amplitude and the drive signal having an offset, and sampling a pressure within a fluid flow path configured to connect the pump system to a wound dressing configured to be placed over a wound during one or more time intervals. Each of the one or more time intervals can occur when the drive signal is approximately at an amplitude equal to one or more sampling amplitudes.

Abstract: An apparatus and use thereof for clearing a capsular space following removal of a cataract or other ophthalmologic procedure. The apparatus includes a body having an irrigation outlet, an aspiration inlet, and a sweeper head rotatably connected with the body for extending a portion of the body including the irrigation outlet, the aspiration inlet, and the sweeper head into the capsular space. The sweeper head is connected with the body by a flow-to-rotary converter located in a cavity within the body for powering the sweeper head with fluid flow while irrigating the capsular space, aspirating the capsular space, or both. Sweeping a surface of the lens capsule while irrigating facilitates clearing remnants and other material from the capsular space following removal of cataracts or another ophthalmologic procedure.

Abstract: A device for intrauterine vacuum therapy includes a pear-shaped fluid-collecting element and a fluid-communicating element. The fluid-collecting element defines an inlet opening at the proximal end and a tubular cavity for receiving a removable guide-rod during transvaginal insertion into a uterine cavity. The fluid-communicating element has a perforated distal end fixed within the fluid-collecting element outside the tubular cavity and has a proximal end adapted for connection to a vacuum-generating system. A method of treating an intrauterine wound or infection includes transvaginally inserting a drain into a uterine cavity and applying a negative pressure to the drain such that the uterus collapses and the inner wall is aspirated against the drain.
